Subj: Wrinkles
Date: 4/19/2010
Have I ruined my skin? I’ve been using retin-A on and off for about four months for fine lines. Recently I’ve noticed that if I stop using it for 3 or 4 days my skin looks horrible: more wrinkles than before I started using it. But if I start using it again, my skin looks plumpled and the fine lines are much less visible. My question: do my lines dismish because of inflammation caused by retin-A, will this end up ruining my skin? Have I already ruined my skin? I must say also that I don’t experience any burning sensation, blisters or anything, and I wear sunscreen spf 35 every day.
Marianne
AskDocWeb: In order to get accurate answers to those questions your condition would need to be evaluated by a dermatologist.
Subj: 10 years of Retin-A
Date: 4/21/2010
I used Retin-A about 10 years ago when I started to develop bad acne on one side of my face. Within a month, it cleared up wonderfully. I use it every once in a while when I get a pimple or two to dry it up and it does clear in up in no time. I have used this medication off an on for the last 10 years and have not had any side effects. Occasionaly if I use it on sesitive parts of my face like my chin or too close to under my eyes, or for an extended period of time, my skin will flake and turn red, but I just stop and within a couple of days, my skin is fine. I just apply a heavy moisturizer or vaseline for a few days to keep my skin from flaking if this happens.

Subj: Retin-A-Micro and tanning
Date: 4/21/2010
I have been using Retin-A-Micro for a few years. I recently started to go tanning and now my face is broke out worse than ever. Could the tanning beds affect my face this way?
Bettie
AskDocWeb: Yes, if you are using Retin-A Micro you should have been instructed to avoid excess sun and tanning. If you feel that you need to look tan then the spray tans, self-tanners or bronzers are safe and they look natural too. The minimum amount of time between the use of Retin-A and tanning that we have seen recommended is seven days.
Subj: Lip area
Date: 4/25/2010
I have used ENVIRON with rentin A twice. I do not put it on my lips, however my lips have become firey red and burn the two times I’ve tried using this. Any suggestions besides avoiding the lip area?
Marcy
AskDocWeb: Sometimes it is a matter of trial and error when it comes to finding out how close to the lips, eyes, and nose it can be used.
Subj: Blemishes or freckles?
Date: 4/26/2010
I have blemishes or freckles. Would retin-A help removing them?
Jas
AskDocWeb: Retin-A would likely help to lighten the freckles but may or may not get rid of them completely. Results may also take several months for maximum effect.
Subj: Skin getting worse
Date: 5/3/2010
I have been using Retin-a for over four years for mostly clogged pores and blackheads on my face. Instead of getting better it is getting worse. My pores are more clogged then ever and Retin-a does not seem to work for this problem. Should I go back to my doctor and ask for something stronger (I am currently taking the mid level strength) or just stop taking it since it is not working?
Mark
AskDocWeb: Since your skin is getting worse, it is safer to check with your doctor than it is to guess. What you do for a treatment would depend on your doctor’s evaluation of the condition of your skin.
Subj: Anew from Avon?
Date: 5/5/2010
Will using Retna A, prescribed by my doctor for under eye bags, and washing my face with Anew from Avon stop the Retna A from working?
AJ
AskDocWeb: We don’t have any information on Anew or its affect on Retin-A but that would be a good question for your Avon representative.
Subj: Retin-A usage
Date: 5/6/2010
A question? I am really interested in that medication so is using too little of it like twice aweek will prevent skin redness or delays the healing? and can i apply this on acne actuall break outs and does it help with acne scars?thanks,
Meme
AskDocWeb: Retin-A is prescribed for the treatment of acne. Using it only 2 or 3 times a week has been reported to allow the skin to become accustomed to the medication and avoid most of the initial redness. Users also report that it works well to get rid of acne scars and improves overall skin condition.
Subj: Less wrinkles
Date: 5/6/2010

Subj: 2 days
Date: 5/8/2010
I just been prescribed to Renova 0.5% and been using it for about ooo 2 days? I dont feel any side effects like peeling or burning or my face being red… Is this normal? Is it not working?
Mike
AskDocWeb: 2 days is not enough time to judge how well it is working. The instructions say that you should begin to notice results after 2 to 3 weeks of treatment. More than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.
Subj: Wait time before waxing
Date: 5/8/2010
I had been using Retin-A for 4 weeks daily. I then proceeded to wax my eyebrows & upper lip. I got a pretty bad burn over my lip. It took about 5 days to heal up with the use of vitamin e & neosporin. I consulted the nurse at the dermotologists office and she said to stop using the Retin-A on those areas 5 days prior to wax. However, I am ready for my next wax session and I’m afraid of burning & scarring my skin again. Is there any reason I should be worried if it’s been 2 weeks since I last applied Retin-A to my upper lip area?
Karen
AskDocWeb: There could be, the length of time needed between use of Retin-A and waxing varies according to how sensitive the skin is and how long the product has been used. We have seen recommended wait times that range from a few weeks up to six months before it was safe to wax. To find out what would be safe for you, talk to your dermatologist.
Subj: Nadinola
Date: 5/9/2010
I have been using retin a for two weeks and its been up and down. I also use benzoyl peroxide 10% gel twice a day. I think that helps with the bumps that the retin a are bringing out. I wish I had some tri-luma. I may just mix tretinoin with nadinola what do you think?
Chanté
AskDocWeb: Mixing other products with Retin-A, which is a prescription drug, should only be done with your doctor’s approval.
Subj: Citrus juice?
Date: 5/11/2010
Retin have made my skin have dark spots and is not working out and the acne scars a bad, I heard that lemon juice helps reduce scaring and dark spots but it says use cation lime so can is still use try the lemon?
N.
AskDocWeb: As a general rule it is safer not to mix acne treatments without checking with your doctor first. For those not using Retin-A, lemon juice has been reported to help lighten dark spots.
Subj: Success with accutane then Retin-A
Date: 5/12/2010
I always had acne until last year.. after countless trials, my derm put me on accutane.. at first it was awful, but after about 3/4 months, things started to clear up (except for the dry lips and inside my nose).. by the 7th month, my skin did not break out anymore… I was taken off the accutane and prescribed Retin A to complete the job. Now, 9 months later and my skin has never looked better. I use a milk cleaner 3 in 1, at night from Vichy, then the retin a 0.1%., in the morning I use loreal’s revitalift cream cleanser/gentle exfoliator w/ vit. c., and then LaRoche-Posay’s Anthelios SX moisturizer/spf.. and once in a while I use Vichy’s aqualia thermal moisterizer. I also spread these products down my neck and chest. I have never looked better. My skin is bright and glows. I’m 33 almost 34, and I’m always told I look 25, sometimes less, but I dont believe…even my scars are clearing beautifully. And to top it off, I dont have bangs anymore and consistently wear my hair up and off my face. Tah duhh… : ).. good luck, and dont give up…

Subj: Retin-A on lips?
Date: 5/13/2010
I am using Retin-A (.02) for about 2-months and love the change in my skin (53 year old male). Does anyone know if it is safe to use Retin-A on my lips? Also…I want to get that youthful worm-like color lips…any recommendations? I don’t use makeup.
Bill
AskDocWeb: The instructions say to keep it away from your mouth so that would include your lips.
Subj: Cream Vs Gel?
Date: 5/14/2010
Hello, I have been using retin a cream for a few years. I still have occasional breakouts and relatively oily skin. Is there any reason why the gel may be a better option? Thanks!
Nicole
AskDocWeb: In general, the gels are stronger than creams because the medication penetrates better when in gel form. Some patients with very oily skin prefer the gel because they find the creams too greasy. Most people report that the gel dries out their skin too much.

Hannah
AskDocWeb: The instructions for Retin-A say that more than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear. But, let’s back up for a moment. Is your sister a doctor? Did she write you a prescription for this drug? If not then you may have more problems than just with your skin condition. Using a prescription drug without a prescription is illegal and may endanger your health. Not recommended.
