Subj: Wonderful results on cystic acne
Date: 5/15/2010
I have just started to use Retin A for a minor but annoying bout of cystic acne that has been reoccurring in the same spots for 2 years. I am 35yrs old and have had to be very careful to try any new products for fear of breakouts, only the expensive ones. In addition I have 2 brown spots on my face and ever increasing wrinkles. My skin is very oily. Started using Retin A .25% nightly and have seen wonderful results since week 1. Some minor peeling but nothing moisturizer in the morning won’t cove most of. I think Retin A is a great product for oily skin types. If you have dry skin to begin with you will likely see more red burning patches and need to start out very slowly to build your skin tolerance.

Subj: No side effects
Date: 5/19/2010
I have been using retin a 0.05% for a week now for my acne I am 30 years old and I am not expericing any of the side effects just my skin is a little red, does this mean that retin a is not working for me?

Meme

AskDocWeb: Not necessarily, you may just be one of the lucky ones that have minimal side effects. Keep in mind that more than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.

Subj: Adverse effect on vision
Date: 5/19/2010
I used Retin-A for about four weeks. I bean to experience a severe filminess over my eyes. I began to wonder if the retin-A was also drying out/altering my tear film. It turns out that is exactly what was happening. That is quite scary that a topical cream can have this adverse effect on your vision. I have stopped the cream and the filminess has gone away for the most part. I still have a little in my one eye. My eye doctor confirmed that this was a side effect of Retin-A cream.

Subj: Zinc
Date: 5/21/2010
I started taking zinc a week ago and my face is braking out..I want to know if maybe zinc will get it worst before it gets better. Should I keep taking it? Helpppppp!

Milena

AskDocWeb: There are some reports by those taking zinc that their face got worse for about a week before improving.

Subj: Retin-A on hands
Date: 5/22/2010
I just started using Retin-A on the back of my hands. It is making my light colored brown spots brighter and more pronounced. Is this normal? Will the spots eventually go away? I was looking for younger looking hands thinking Retin-A will make the spots go away.

Kathy

AskDocWeb: Most patients go through a period of adjustment when using Retin-A in which the condition of the skin gets worse before it gets better. Several people have reported that their brown spots turned bright red before disappearing. Of course there is no guarantee but you should begin to notice results after 2 to 3 weeks of treatment.

Subj: Acne scars?
Date: 5/23/2010
I have been retin a everyday for almost 3 months. Intially, started using for acne but also had acne scars. I have question and comment. This stuff has been great for me just at the point I want to be yet but I’m whiling to wait. My question about scar does it help. If so, how much? Will completely dimish it? How long does it take? Honestly I see results in these three months I feel it reduced about 20% of it.

Jesse

AskDocWeb: Although the primary purpose of Retin-A is to treat active acne, it has shown some effectiveness in treating acne scars that already exist. Unfortunately that effectiveness is not the same for everyone, possibly due to differences in skin type and type of scar.

Subj: Lines under eyes?
Date: 5/24/2010
What’s the difference between renova & retin a? I want to use it to reduce lines under my eyes, I know your not supposed to get it in your eye, but is it ok to use it under for the lines?

John

AskDocWeb: The instructions say to keep it away from your eyes. There are reports from some that they slowly, gradually worked their way closer to the eyes over several days to find out just how close it could be applied. The skin under your eyes is very delicate so do be careful. Please read the following post.

Subj: Under eyes becoming wrinkled
Date: 5/24/2010
Hello, I have now been using retin A for about 2 months, it has improved my acne, however I have applied the product under my eyes. Since doing this I can clearly see my under eyes are becoming wrinkled. Is this damage permanent or will it heal over time. Also I was wondering whether Retin A can cause liver damage. Regards

Stuart

AskDocWeb: You aren’t alone in finding more wrinkles under your eyes after using Retin-A in those areas. The good news is that the damage is not permanent although it may take three or four weeks to recover. The possibility of liver problems is still up in the air. A 91-week dermal study produced no conclusions about liver damage although a dose-related incidence of liver tumors was observed in the male mice of that study.

Subj: Itchy and pus filled pimples
Date: 5/24/2010
Retin a, is very itchy, and I don’t sleep at night because the itching would not allow me. whenever I apply it, in less than two hours, pus will fill up the pimples. I just hope the pimples will subside after all these uncomfortable experiences.

Subj: Use the right amount
Date: 5/25/2010
I, 18 years old, and I have been using Retin A (0,05 tretinoin) for almost 2 weeks now for acne. I didn’t have really big problems, just some few pimples on my cheeks that wouldn’t submit to other products. And alot of brownish scars on my cheecks to. I didn’t went trough the worsening state, and I have no pimple left. Although, I found out that if I don’t let my skin dry for 20 minutes before I apply Retin A and I don’t use the right amount (pea size for all face) I break out. So please, people, use the right amount if you want the best results. After I apply it, I wait for 20-30 minutes and apply an Aloe Vera hydrating and emmolient balm that doesn’t get absorbed by the skin, and it makes my complexion wonderful. Thanks to that balm my skin doesn’t peel in the morning, rather in the evening. I can’t wait to see the full benefits over a few more weeks of using. As I read here it’s so good for wrinkles too, I plan to stick on it forever for maintenance. It won’t be a big deal since I live in a country where I can buy it without a prescription and it costs 4 to 5 dollars. I am so happy to have found this product.

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: For those using Aloe Vera, be sure to check for side effects and cautions.

Subj: Area of crepiness
Date: 5/27/2010
I am 58 and have been using Tretinoin (Retin-A) .05% for the past eight months and have seen good results. However, I am concerned about an area of crepiness (i.e., skin that sags with lines and wrinkles) that has set in along the tops of my cheekbone, about an inch below my eyes. Should the Retin-A be helping this, or could it be contributing to its worsening? Thank you.

June

AskDocWeb: Retin-A may help improve the texture of your skin but is not likely to do anything for the sag or droop. In researching your question it appears that “crepiness” may be a new word, which is not in any of our several dictionaries. Searching the web produced several possible definitions: 1: skin that looks like crepe paper 2: the loss of collagen 3: thinning of skin 4: fine wrinkle lines 5: crinkles 6: aged skin.

Subj: StriVectin Sculpting Face cream
Date: 6/2/2010
Hello AskDocWeb, I started using StriVectin Sculpting Face cream. It is a sample. Before buying a supply of it, I would like to know if there are any known side effects that would harm ine internal organs. The list of components that are in StriVectin are freightning to say the least. There are numerous elements listed. Does anything topical seep into one’s internal organs? From what I hear, the cream is remarkable in diminishing lines and creases on the face and giving the face a luminous glow. Thank you for your response.

Subj: What strength?
Date: 6/3/2010
What strength should one start with? I have not used Retin-a before but my esthetician suggested it but did not tell me what make or strength. She suggested it for collagen increase to improve my winkles? I look forward to your answer? Thank you.

Mollie

AskDocWeb: In general, it is a good idea to start with the lowest strength cream and work your way up slowly. Your dermatologist will choose the appropriate strength prescription based on your current skin condition.

Subj: Red chapped skin
Date: 6/5/2010
I used Retin-A for my mild acne at bedtime after washing my face with this generic brand (equate) of daily face wash and letting my face dry for 10 minutes…I used about a half inch ribbon of Retin- A, enough to cover my entire face with a thin film and then in the morning I washed my face again with another generic face scrub (equate) containing salicylic acid in it to slough off dead skin and I used a Mary Kay face lotion with no acne medication in it…then again at bedtime the Retin-A routine and then the next morning I switched it up with a Mary Kay face wash with no acne medication in it and used Pro-Active’s face lotion with Benzoyl Peroxide in it, the at bedtime I did the Retin-A routine again…

The following day I did the Salicylic Acid Face Scrub and the Mary Kay face lotion and then I switched again the following day to Mary Kay’s Face Wash and Pro-Active’s Benzoyl Peroxide…that was my routine for two weeks…On top of that, I was using Cover-girls oil reducing face powder on top of a liquid foundation which is what I believe also dried out my skin! I kept switching acne med’s- every other morning the benzoyl peroxide and the salicylic acid, in rotation, and now the skin under and around my lips and chin is chapped really bad and it stings and is red and its really embarrassing to go out in public! I have to suspend the use of all acne med’s for one week and then I am going to switch back to the Retin- A routine because I believe it will work if I am just careful with what other products I use in conjunction with this powerful medication. I really also don’t like using any kind of SPF on my face because it makes me break out because they are always so oily…do you have any suggestions of an SPF that wont make me break out? Also, do you have any other tips for me on the use of Retin-A for the next time around?

Grace

AskDocWeb: The instructions for applying Retin-a say that redness, blistering, or peeling of the skin may result if too much is applied at once. We are concerned about the possibility of something interacting with the Retin-A when using so many different products. It sounds like you might benefit from consulting with a dermatologist about an overall long-term treatment plan, which products to use when, etc., to get the best results.

Subj: Great product!
Date: 6/7/2010
I have been using Retin A for over 5 years (no acne) and it has kept me looking about 10 years younger!! Great product!!
