Subj: Foot blisters
Date: 6/8/2010
I always have breakouts of athlete’s foot blisters on my right foot during the hot Arizona summer. In desperation, I dug through the medicine chest and found my daughter’s Retin-A, left over from her battle with acne. I used it on the affected area and PRESTO! the next day, the affected area was practically healed–no more new blisters!!! YAY RETIN-A!

David

AskDocWeb: We have not heard of Retin-A being used as a treatment for blisters. Is this David the prankster?

Subj: Calamline
Date: 6/9/2010
hi ive been useing calamline for about 4 months it dosent work very well so i was wondering if retin-a is better?

Annie

AskDocWeb: That depends on what you want to accomplish. Are you fighting acne or what?

Subj: Neck area?
Date: 6/9/2010
I have been using Retin-A for at least 10 years with excellent results around the eyes and forehead. However, it doesn’t appear to do much for lines between my mouth and chin. It also doesn’t seem to do much for my neck. I haven’t read anything about the neck area. Does it not improve the neck? If not, is there anything else that gets good results there? I don’t want plastic surgery!

Laurie

AskDocWeb: Several women have reported good results on the neck but others report irritation and itching that makes is unacceptable. Most neck creams have a formula that is similar to face creams. The problem is that the skin on the neck is typically more sensitive to irritation than the face. Some of the creams that have gotten good reviews are L’occitane Almond Milk Concentrate, Clarins, Elizabeth Arden’s good night sleep cream, Rodial Glam Blam, and Hormeta’s cream.

Subj: Red and peeling skin
Date: 6/11/2010
I started using Retin A 0.1% 1 week ago to treat moderate acne on my chin and jaw area. I put it on once a day at bedtime. I am noticing an improvement in my acne however, my chin is bright red and burns. I cover it up with makeup during the day but, I work 3-11 shifts and before the end of my shift my co-workers are asking me what happened to my face because it is red and peeling. It looks like I need to take a razor and shave off my peeling skin beard. Wondering if there is anything I can do to help this for example a good moisturizer and something to help the redness? Also, want to know if this is just temporary and is it just a stage of using the retin a that I have to get through? My acne may be improved but, the condition of my skin is worse as far as redness and dryness and peeling. It looks chapped/chafed.

Mary

AskDocWeb: During first few weeks of acne therapy, a worsening of the condition may occur due to the action of Retin-A on deep, previously unseen areas of inflammation. This is not a reason to discontinue therapy but do notify your doctor if it occurs. A couple of points to remember: 1. More than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear. 2. Applying excessive amounts of Retin-A will not produce faster or better results, and may result in marked redness, peeling, or discomfort.

Subj: Dark spot
Date: 6/12/2010
Hello, I am starting raten a .05 last week. After using it I saw some difference. I have some dark spot but it does not remove. Is it work to remove dark spot and how long?

Rasel

AskDocWeb: Part of the benefit of using Retin-A is its ability to reduce or eliminate liver spots, brown or gray growths and even some precancerous lesions however, that does take time. More than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear.

Subj: Facial hair growth?
Date: 6/12/2010
My question is this, I am using Tretinoin cream .05% because I eventually want to get the fractional laser done and this is what my doctor suggested. Also I am 60 and wouldn’t mind waiting another year and this seemed to be a good thing to do. Does this cream cause facial hair to growth?. I am noticing very fine hair on my cheeks and am not sure whether it is from the cream (4 weeks now) or just my hormones. Thank you in advance.

Rosalie

AskDocWeb: It is much more likely to be your hormones because Tretinoin has not been reported to cause the growth of any hair.

Subj: Retin-A success story
Date: 6/12/2010
Retin-A is a lifesaver! I have struggled with adult acne for ten years and it is the only thing that has worked to clear up my skin! I’ve tried everything including salycilic acid, benzoyl peroxide and chemical peels. Now I use Retin-A with a physician-dispensed program called Obagi that combines hydroquinone and glycolic acid for major results on acne, wrinkles, sundamaged skin or melasma (which I also got from being on the pill and going outside without sunblock!)

As a side note, the Retin-A has kept my skin looking incredibly young! People think I’m in my early 20’s- not my mid thirties! BUT… you must use sunblock when on Retin-A or else you WILL burn badly. Plus, we should all wear sunblock on our faces EVERYDAY anyway to prevent premature aging!!! Side effects I have personally experienced are dryness, peeling, burning, redness, and sensitivity to the wind, but these vary in intensity depending upon which strength Retin-A you are using and how much you use. I tend to be very agressive in my skincare treatments. Good luck!!!

Subj: Hyperpigmentation near the mouth
Date: 6/15/2010
my problem is hyperpigmentation on my cheeks and both angles of my mouth. My doctor prescribed retin a. I read that Retin A shldnt be used near the mouth. So what should I do to treat hyperpigmentation near my mouth? Thanks.

Corazon

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately we have yet to see a product that we would use next to the mouth. The treatments for hyperpigmentation include one or more of the following;

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acid
  • Azelaic acid
  • Gamma oryzanol
  • Hydroquinone
  • Kojic acid
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate
  • N-Acetyl Glucosamine & Niacinamide
  • Retinoids (Retin-A)

Although it takes time (24 weeks or more), these products can improve melasma and other hyperpigmentation disorders with varying degrees of success. The most significant improvement usually comes from combinations of these treatments. Reduction of pigmentation results from the retinoid-induced dispersion of keratinocyte pigment granules, interference with pigment transfer, and acceleration of epidermal turnover.

Subj: Deep lines?
Date: 6/16/2010
I have been using retin-a for over a year. My fine lines look great. Will retin-a get to the deep lines? Does anyone know what wiil help deep lines in forhead besides botox. Since using retin-a people think I look 39-42 and I will turn 50 next month.

Lois

AskDocWeb: If anyone has a suggestion other than plastic surgery, please share it with Lois.

Subj: Prolonged use of Retin-A
Date: 6/16/2010
I started using this product a couple of months ago 0.04% because I have sensitive skin, well since I started using it I have had peely skin and dry skin on my face yes the acne did improve but I still do get acne, So idk if I should keep on with the product because a doctor told me prolonged use of retin A causes rosacea and made lead to skin cancer later on.. i dont know what to believe anymmore

Michelle

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of Retin-a leading to skin cancer. On the contrary, a growing number of people in the Sun Belt are using Retin-A to both prevent and treat an early form of skin cancer, even though studies about the safety and effectiveness against cancer have not been completed. Until medical science finds the cause of rosacea, the possibility that Retin-A might cause it is still an unknown.

Subj: How soon to see improvement?
Date: 6/21/2010
Hi, I have two questions. I have been using Retin-A MICRO 0.01% and it’s been about 2 or three weeks. My cheeks tend to turn red and I get small bumps all over my forhead and cheeks. Is this one of the stages that I will be going tru, and how can I reduce the redness? How long will it take me to see improvement? And will Retin-A help me clear up my acne without putting anything in the morning but just that during the night? Too many questions I asked. But I really would love to have this questions answerd. Thank you!

Amy

AskDocWeb: According to the patient information on Retin-A, the early weeks of therapy may produce a worsening of the skin condition as deep previously unseen areas of inflammation come to the surface. You should begin to notice results after 2 to 3 weeks of treatment. More than 6 or 7 weeks of treatment may be needed before consistent beneficial effects appear. Long term users stress the importance of giving the skin a chance to get used to this product often by alternating use every other night. They also highly recommend the use of a moisturizer.

Subj: Clearasil ultra and SPF
Date: 6/22/2010
Hi, I been using Retin-A Cream for not even 2 weeks now.. I just want to know what face wash would you recommend to use while on retin-a? Right now i’m using Clearasil ultra.. is that to strong of a face wash to use? And what SPF would you recommend?

Rosie

AskDocWeb: Please consult your doctor before using any other acne product along with Retin-A. The minimum SPF we’ve seen recommended sunscreen is 15 but the higher the better, an SPF of 30 would be safer.

Subj: Redness
Date: 6/26/2010
Hi, I have been using retin-a 0.1% for four months and the redness has been constant throughout. Should I drop down to 0.05%? I dont seem to suffer from any of the other side effects.

Simmo

AskDocWeb: This forum is limited to the discussion of side effect. For advice you need to consult with a dermatologist.

Subj: Totally cleared my pimples
Date: 6/26/2010
Hi, I have used Retino A (0.05 and 0.25) for almost 6 months and it totally cleared away my pimples. My dermatologist prescribed that, skin peeling is common while using. What I have heard is the medicine tries to peel off 1 layer of skin which is used to remove pimple marks. Since the skin becomes dry and flaky, one should not go under the sun when on medication.
