Subj: Frequent urination – bladder problems?
Date: 6/29/2010
I have been using retin a for 4 months now, with the typical side effects regarding flaking and skin worsening at the begininng however I have a condition I’m really worried about. Is retin a connected to any bladder problems? Because since using retin a I have had a HIGH increase in needing to urinate, every 10 minutes or so and it all started with the retin A use.
Liya
AskDocWeb: Neither frequent urination nor bladder problems are listed as side effects of using Retin-A but it does sound like something that needs to be checked out by your doctor.
Subj: Big red pimples and white heads
Date: 7/1/2010
I have been using retin-a o.o1 gel for about 3 months and there has not been much improvement. I did play lots of sports in the sun during the first and second month I was using the gel which lead to excessive sun exposure. But I had a moisturizer with SPF 45 on. Now, at the end of the third month my acne is starting to break out and I am getting big red pimples. I only had a problem with whiteheads and blackheads before. Although, some parts of my cheeks and forehead do look better since the white heads are smaller and have lessened. I thought you are only supposed to break out the first month of usage. Is this normal? Is retin-a just working slower on me? Is it due to the sun exposure?
Ash
AskDocWeb: It can take longer for the skin to go through the various phases because you are using the weakest formula of Retin-A.
Subj: Itchy and swollen
Date: 7/2/2010
I was using Retin A with great results. I was using the .10% strength and had only peeling on the 2nd or 3rd day after applying Retin A. I was on the pill at the time. Unbeknownst to me, I stopped using the pill and after about 2 weeks, I began to develop a very severe reaction to retin a. My face became extremely itchy and swollen! BUT when I finally healed (about 5 days later, my skin was GORGEOUS!) I finally figured out it was because of hormones and all that so now I’m trying the .05% strength in hopes that I will not have such a severe reaction. If i do, i’ll try the .025% and see what happens…

Subj: Vitamin E oil
Date: 7/2/2010
QUESTION- I use vitamin E to moisturize at night and I was wondering if I could use it with my retin A. I was thinking I could wash my skin, wait 15-20 minutes, then wait another 15-20 (for retin a to dry) then apply my vitamin e oil. Does this sound ok? I don’t want to make my retin a less effective but I looooove vitamin e oil on my skin!
Erica
AskDocWeb: Researchers have shown that vitamin E oil can prevent inflammation and skin damage if applied within eight hours of sun exposure. However, because vitamin E produces free radicals when exposed to ultraviolet light, researchers recommend that you apply it following sun exposure but not right before.
Subj: Red spots
Date: 7/6/2010
I am on my 4th week of using Retin-A Micro 0.1%. I have been using it as instructed by my doctor. I had an initial breakout the first 2 weeks of using Retin A. The pimples from the initial breakout is clearing up. However, the breakout left behind alot of dark red spots all over my face. I am very concern. Will these red spots fade away? If so, how much time will it take for the spots to disappear?
Phillip
AskDocWeb: It may or may not help. It depends on the cause and nature of the red spots. Some redness may be caused by the Retin-A as your skin adjusts to it. The red spots may slowly disappear over six to eight weeks of use. If not then you may have to consult with a dermatologist to get rid of them.
Subj: Extremely itchy skin
Date: 7/7/2010
I used retin a cream 1% evedyother night to every 3rd night and rotated the off nights with duac for hormonal acne and that worked. Acne did get worse 2 weeks on the rentin a. Apparently this is normal. I had a chemical reaction a few times hives or something with extreme itching skin. My acne is now gone took 3 months. Now I am only on retinue a 025% gel every other to 3rd day and use Jojaba oil as my moisturizer as I wanted to get off all other products so I could try to get rid of the itchy skin but still been getting extremely itchy skin in-between. Assuming its the retin a…

Subj: Acne
Date: 7/7/2010
I have acne and I have tried every over the counter products and nothing worked. I have tried proactive and it just dried my skin. I used neutrogena, clean and clear, clearsil EVERYTHING. Then i went to a dermatologist and he prescribed me Retin A,,,, I didnt buy it yet because I read some reviews that its not safe its dangerous and that it doesnt help at all. I am now scared to use it. My acne is not that bad, it’s mostly redness now than acne. And its mostly on my forehead, and a little in the V area. Should I use it or not? I also saw Murad’s commercials and I am thinking about that too…..should I try murad first or go with what my derm told me to do? help please,
Anita
AskDocWeb: Let’s rephrase this: You want to decide between following the advice of someone you saw in a commercial trying to sell you something and the advice you received from a dermatologist you paid for a professional medical opinion. Hum… Your chances of successfully dealing with any health issue are higher when you follow your doctor’s instructions. After all, that is their specialty.
Subj: Yeast infections?
Date: 7/7/2010
can retin-a cause yeast infections in men if used on a penis to reduce fordyce spots?
Tom
AskDocWeb: It may feel like a bad yeast infection but that is just the normal irritation that may result from using such a powerful medication on skin that is very sensitive. Fordyce granules or spots are usually small yellow ectopic sebaceous glands that occur on the inner lips although they can also occur on the genitals. They are completely harmless and treatment is not usually needed. Typically they will resolve spontaneously without intervention.
Subj: Dents in my skin
Date: 7/9/2010
I was on tretinoin for 3 months. At first, my skin was even toned and glowed. After about 2 months of daily use (Once at night time), I noticed dents in my skin appearing. Also, some of the colour from my skin has vanished. IS this just temporary? Can anyone put my mind at rest? I have been so down about it, my confidence has seriously suffered – I wish I never used it.

Subj: After stopping Retin-A
Date: 7/12/2010
Im 17 and Ive been using it due to bad acne. It has cleared up but I still have acne and I still form pimples while using the product. I have also noticed that my skin is really really thin as is a side affect. I dont want to use the product anymore and wanted to know if my skin will return to ‘normal’ if I stopped using the product? By that I mean become firm again and less thin? I am so so soo very panicked right now!! Thank you!
Ashley
AskDocWeb: Your skin will gradually return to normal but keep in mind that it will remain super sensitive, especially to sunlight for several months. In one case it took a year and a half.
Subj: Rough rash
Date: 7/14/2010
I have been using the cream for almost a year on and off. It leaves the skin dry with a rash that feels rough. So use plenty of moisturizer e.g. simple along with a non-greasy sunblock lotion if long exposure in the sun. So far face have not lot that bad, overtime should see results.

Subj: Vanicream moisturizer
Date: 7/17/2010
I have been using retin-a for six weeks now for under my eyes and have seen good results. There is a little dryness but I found that Vanicream moisturizer works excellent.

Subj: Skin discoloration
Date: 7/18/2010
Ten years before I used Ratino A 0.025mg for my skin discolouration due to hormonal imbalances (After delivery). At that time my skin becomes very smooth and soft. Now I am 39 years old. Now I have small Black patchy pigments just close to the nose and slight discolouratin around my mouth area. Can I use the same product for that? Now I have very smooth and normal skin. Regularly I am using Sun screen moisturiser and night cream.
Laxmi
AskDocWeb: The patient information for Retin-A says to keep it away from the mouth and other mucus membranes so that probably wouldn’t work.
Subj: Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier moisturizer
Date: 7/24/2010
hi, I’ve been using the Paula’s Choice Resist Barrier moisturizer which contains retinol. I’ve developed a small red scaly patch on my cheek and I was wondering if the retinol has anything to do with it, and if it does, whether I should discontinue usage or not. (and if it’s too early to use a product containing retinol at 22.)

Subj: Epiduo
Date: 7/25/2010
I used the product Epiduo on my face 1 time and have severe swollen, burning, rashy, itching skin. What can I do until I visit my dermatologist. Will this ever go back to normal?
Marge
AskDocWeb: Swelling is listed as one of the possible side effects that may require medical attention right away.
Subj: Thin skin shininess
Date: 7/27/2010
I am 18 years old. I have used Retin-A for 4 months and it improved my skin alot. I dont have acne anymore. However the skin on my face has become very thin and certain areas of my face have become a bit shiny. Should I stop using Retin A? Will my acne return if I stop? and will my skin ever re-thicken on its own? do I have to use products to rethicken my skin and will the shiny-ness from the thin skin go away?
Jasmine
AskDocWeb: The shininess may result from using Retin-A without a moisturizer. One of the possible side effects of Retin-A is dry skin, which is why a moisturizer is recommended. Healthy skin has a good balance of both water and oil. If either the balance is off then the skin may appear shiny.
