Skin Type Test
What is Skin Type?
Your skin type is determined by the amount of oil your skin produces. Typically, there are four categories of skin type; dry, normal, oily and combination. The amount of oil your skin produces can vary according to your genes, diet, stress level, medication and even your skincare regimen. And since some of these are variables, your skin type can change over time.
What Type of Skin Do You Have?
When shopping for effective skin care products, it is important to get the right product for your skin type. If you have any doubt about, or don’t know your skin type, here’s an easy way to find out.
Simple Skin Type Test
1. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and rinse it thoroughly, splashing with lukewarm water at least 10 times. Do not apply anything else to your skin.
2. Take a piece of basic blotting paper or tissue and cut it into four one-inch squares.
3. Relax for about 3 hours and then apply one paper to each of four areas, your chin, nose, cheek and forehead, holding each in place for about 10 seconds.
4. Examine each paper square under a good light and note the results.
- If the papers are dry or free of oily residue, your skin type is “dry”.
- If the papers show only a trace of oily residue, your skin type is “normal”.
- If the papers show a clear, oily residue, your skin type is “oily”.
- If more than one of the papers from your chin, nose and forehead have oily residue and the cheek paper is dry, you have “combination” skin.
About 70 percent of women have combination skin.
