Subj: Shakes and slow motion movements
My sister takes soma and she acts confused and sleeps sitting up with the shakes, and very slow motion at everything she does. My sister is very hooked. And also xanax, how can I help her?
AskDocWeb: It sounds like someone should make an appointment for her to see a neurologist to find out if there’s any permanent nerve damage. She may need to go to a clinic and spend a few months for drug addiction.
Subj: Use of soma and codeine while pregnant and nursing
I have a question about my use of soma and codeine while pregnant and nursing my daughter. I was on the highest doses for those prescriptions for many months after an accident. My daughter is an adult now and has bone loss in her teeth. The dentist said it was perhaps related to the drug use during my pregnancy. Is there any research related to tooth enamel or bone loss associated with soma or codeine? Thank you so much,
AskDocWeb: No, the only thing we found was about Amoxicillin/Amoxil. According to a study published in the October 2005 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, use of the antibiotic amoxicillin during infancy appears to be linked to tooth enamel defects in permanent teeth.
Subj: Long-term side-effects?
What are the long-term negative health side-effects of taking somas, particularly regularly taking too many at one time and also, particularly related to the heart (muscles), specific negative long-term adverse health effects??? I know they affect liver/kidney…more detail into that and what about the long-term negative health effects concerning the heart. Thank you,
AskDocWeb: Information about the long-term use of Soma does not seem to be available, probably because its use is not recommended beyond three weeks. In post-marketing reports, cases of dependence, abuse, and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use. In most cases these occurred in patients with a history of addiction or who used Soma in combination with other drugs that have abuse potential. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt cessation after prolonged use.
Subj: Is this information correct?
I have been taking soma for 5-6 years for thoracic outlet syndrome. I underwent surgery to correct the TOS, but it did not help. I have severe spasms in my shoulder and neck. The only thing that helps is soma. I moved to Tennessee and I have been told that they will not prescribe soma in the state of Tennessee. Pain Management tried two different muscle relaxers and they have not worked. I was told that once you take soma, no other muscle relaxer will work. Is this information correct about soma?
AskDocWeb: No, Soma has nothing in it that would prevent other drugs from working.
Subj: Couldn’t handle the pain anymore
I have debilitating neck and jaw pain that I was pretty much getting used to dealing with. There were days I couldn’t even get dressed. I am quite a paranoid person especially about damaging my body. I have never used illegal drugs, nor smoked, nor do I even drink soda or eat unhealthy foods. But the day came when I couldn’t handle the pain anymore, so I called my doctor. He prescribed to me vicodin for the pain and soma for the muscle spasms that cause most of the pain. WOW. Night and day difference. Not only does the pain relieve, but it seems to wash away a lot of depression I have dealt with as well. The only way to describe the way I feel is: I finally feel normal. Like when I take the drugs that is the way I should feel naturally everyday! I hate to say it, but this drug is so beneficial to me that I wouldn’t mind being addicted to it. Although, that will never happen. I still only take about one or two pills a week when pain is unbearable. Drugs are bad… but I guess living with chronic pain is worse. Meet with a doctor and decide what is best for you. Overall, I love the benefits, and so far have researched and found nothing bad to outweigh them.
Subj: Somas at once?
Hey there! I was wondering about the dosage amount for soma…I notice that on a medication like vicodin it states 1-2 every 4-6 hrs. Well myself and alot of other people have taken 3 without any problems. My question is could u take two somas at one time…even though the prescription says one at time…and I’m not a addict and not trying to become one. I know you are supposed to just simply follow the doctor’s orders…but is it more dangerous to take two somas at once than 3 vicodin at once? Thanks,
AskDocWeb: Just because you got away with taking a minor overdose once without serious consequences doesn’t mean you will every time. Sooner or later overdosing will cause you serious, possibly life-threatening harm. Please talk to your doctor about this.
Subj: Soma safe, effective medication
I have taken Soma as prescribed for a decade now and have noticed no long-term effects that I’m aware of. Soma works for me and I would say, based on personal experience, that it is a safe, effective medication.
Subj: Legs and feet hurting
I use Carisoprodol to help me sleep. I have fibro-mialgia and it seems to work good. Since September, my legs and feet have been hurting. Is there anything in it that could be causing this. We went on a trip in Sept and drove straight back(15 hours) but we got in and out of the car a lot and I stretched in the car. I have gone from ballroom dancing occasionally to not being able to stand for a long time without pain. I hate to give up my good sleep but if it’s a possibility that this could be making my legs hurt, I guess I will have to. Thank you
AskDocWeb: Others suffering from fibromyalgia have reported relief from muscle pain in the calves and legs upon discontinuing Soma. Make sure you report this to your doctor.
Subj: Soma addiction
I have never taken soma myself but my sister is addicted to it and has been for over a year. She has tried to commit suicide with it and has overdosed on it many times. I’m so worried about her and my 3 year old niece. What can I do?
AskDocWeb: We suggest you seek out other members of your family for support and advice. Our focus here is on side effects.
Subj: Weight gain
I have been taking Soma for 6 years now, due to a back and neck injury and surgeries. I do know that when I take Soma I get a severe hunger. I start eating and cannot stop until I just can’t eat anymore. So the comments that I have read concerning weight gain is probably due to the severe hunger after taking Soma. I have gained sixty lbs since I started taking Soma. Soma really helps with my neck and back pain along with pain pills so I continue to take them. It is a no win situation. I don’t like the weight gain, and I certainly don’t like the pain if I don’t take the Soma.
Subj: This ain’t the way to go
I’ve used Soma steadily for the past 4 years. I was first introduced to it about 15 years ago for back spasms and didn’t have any problems once the ‘scripts were up. But when I found it was available at a price on the net, I started ordering. In looking back, I’ve only been using it to get the euphoric feeling, but it has been at a cost. When I counted up the approximate amount I had spent on credit cards (probably $15,000) and the number of “Out of Area” phone calls asking me if I wanted to refill my prescription, I knew I had a bad problem. Fortunately I’m in therapy and meeting at least once if not twice a week in a 12 step group and am finding help in the journey. Just finished reading a book called “Broken.” If any of you have a chance to read it, (and are experiencing any of the things I’ve described) you’ll be able to definitely related to the author’s description as how this “ain’t the way to go.” Keep a good thought!
My sister has been using soma 300mg for over 7 years. She’s lost a lot of weight, friends and family members. She has two children 14 and 10, and keeps a very unclean house. She’s in complete denial. CPS has been called, but I guess they don’t feel the kids are in physical danger, as they have not done anything. Does anyone have any advice how to get her to “see the light”… nothing has worked, thus far!
Soma is highly addictive. It can ruin your family.
Subj: I shake a lot!
Hi, I have been taking soma for a few weeks but I noticed I shake a lot! Is this normal or not? It scares me. It is really strange. Thanks so much. PS It is mostly my hands that shake – I don’t understand why. Oh, I should add I have CNS Lupus and it does help with the pain somewhat. Thank you.
AskDocWeb: Shaking is not normal and should be reported to your physician.
Subj: For Anna
Anna, your Mom has been taking Soma and it has ruined your life? I understand how you feel. I am a Mom and I have been on Soma for 10 years off and on, and I know for a fact that I have caused much division and heartache for all of those around me. How has your mother’s usage of soma affected you. Will you please share?
