Subj: Soma is the only one that helps
I’ve been taking soma for at least four years now. I have tried EVERYTHING, this is the only one that helps. I have a very complicated condition. I have fusion in my neck and my “t” vertebra are fused also, some are hemi and some are butterfly. There is also kyphosis and scoloisis and the junction of “t” to “l” there is a disc narrowing and then the “l” are degenerative and have spurs and herniations and an annual tear. The “s” are complicated too. This compromises my lungs and numerous other things. The problem is that soma works and it helps take the spasms off of the lungs so that I can breath and function. My doctor wants to wean the dose down and my situation is getting worse, I am currently putting off a surgery because the odd are not good and I would like to wait as long as possible.
I do not stop doing things. I clean my house, teach my children, ski, do yogo and tichi, I eat healthy and exercise at least 3 times a week. If I wait all day and take it at the end of the school day, the spasms are so bad that they are on top of each other and are very painful. Not to mention I have problems breathing. If I take it every 4-5 hrs, I keep everything under control and it goes better. Less pain meds… What do I do now that the doctors and insurance is changing things. I’m really scarred.
I went off of it for a week with out side effects, but I was in so much pain and the spasms where so bad that they where everywhere. And they seemed to be on top of each other. Like if I thought it couldn’t get any tighter, another spasm would come and make it worse. I cried and cried. And I am not a crier or a complainer. I look for the bright side of things and focus on other things. I just feel like if you think of the pain, you make more pain. Is this ok, or is there something new like soma that helps??? Need help fast. Please help me sort this out.
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may need the help of a pain specialist, You might want to ask about injections of cortisone.
Subj: Soma works
I have been taking Soma 350mg for more years than I can remember. It works. I never run out because I take it as prescribed. I get the feeling that I could take the entire bottle (not recommended) and have no “side” effects. It is a weak muscle relaxer and works. Flexeril knocks me out and I can’t function well for 24 to 48 hours after taking just one 10mg tablet of Flexeril. I don’t seem to have any problem with Soma. I don’t take it all the time, but never take more. Addictive? I don’t know, but for me I don’t care, it works. Thanks
Subj: Is it safe?
My daughter is 2 months pregnant. Her OB said it is OK for her to stay on Soma. I am concerned about the side effects to the unborn child. Can you honestly tell me it is safe for her to take? She is also a diabetic and on insulin. Thank you, A concerned mother and grandma to be.
AskDocWeb: Some answers in life are either yes or no but this is not one of them. When it comes to using medication safety is a relative thing. There is a possible risk, but not a proven risk. The known benefits have to be weighed against the possible risks. Soma is a category C drug meaning it should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks.
I have been taking soma since the last week in March and now I am not sure if I am pregnant. Will there be any harm to the fetus?
AskDocWeb: You need to check with your doctor to weight the benefits and risks of using Soma while pregnant.
Subj: No fricken thanks
I find all of this rather odd. I mean, people are downing 20 muscle relaxer/pain pills a day, and they’re freaking out on their addition or how a friend with a similar habit has overdosed? A kingdom of fools. Yeah, it’s the doctor’s fault…Now pass me another fix…I take Soma every night. I have for 7 years. Each night I take 1 250mg tablet. During the day I do not rise to the morning light thinking I really need to pop a couple more–and I have been a hard core drug addict in the past. Now, I can see how Soma can lend itself to addition. Same thing with Vicodin-like prescriptions. But, I’ve seen classic type A compulsive people fully hooked on that morning Starbucks. I mean, they cannot function, they get head aches, and they just do not operate properly if they do not get their Starbucks’ fix. So, I really think we all need to step back a little here. Now, some might ask me why I haven’t opted to step up my Soma use a little. To be sure, I still enjoy an occasional altering of my conscious state, but here’s the thing with any of these little buzz projects: once you turn them into an active parts of your typical routine, the kind of high you get disapears. To be sure, you’ll get a more serious or hard core buzz as a full blown junky, pill addict, or blow fiend, but it’s not the same as when you used to do a drug for a Friday night high once a month back in the day. Rather, it becomes a burdon and must be looked after and maintained. Man, just what I need: another nagging responsibility tearing at my mind and soul! No fricken thanks, brother!! Been there, done that.
I currently use Soma to ease some pain in my neck and shoulders that results from skeletal muscle tension. And when I have NO obligations, I enjoy a Soma during the day with a vicodin. And while that’s a nice feeling, I only do that about once a month. Why? If you don’t know the answer, I recommend that you use drugs like Soma LESS than the prescribed amount. You can accomplish some relief with acupuncture and NSAID’s. Or meditate and drop 20 pounds (god knows that would put me a whole lot more right). Remember, help is good, too much help is bad. Sometimes you have to muddle through this sojourn with the pain and distortion that comes from existing in the material world. Jump out for an evening but always come back.
Subj: Soma hangover
I took soma last night as prescribed by my neurologist. I have severe neck spasms. I am also epileptic and am on Lamictal. I woke up this morning with a “soma hangover”. I am in a total fog and I’m wondering if I’m going to have to go through this every morning. Will my body adjust eventually?
AskDocWeb: There are some reports of “brain fog” even after 3 years of use.
Subj: Blurred vision in left eye
I’ve been on Soma three days. This morning I woke up with blurred vision in my left eye. I called my neurologist and he said to stop the Soma. Does anybody know how long this will last until I can see clearly again?
Subj: Soma carisoprodol dosage
I just started using soma for muscle spasms and sleep. I seem to have a very high tolerance to meds, as I am on 4-8 mg of suboxone a day. I take 4 at a time to feel anything, and that does not seem to do anything at all. Is 1400mg at once dangerous?
AskDocWeb: Yes, taking 1400mg all at once would be dangerous. The recommended dosage for SOMA ranges up to 350 mg three times a day and at bedtime. The recommended maximum duration of SOMA use is up to three weeks.
Subj: Episodes of mind racing and dizziness
I’ve been taking Soma 350mg for a little over a month. I’m a college student (biology major) and I’ve had chronic neck pain for over 4 years (from excessive looking down during 4hr labs, studying, computer work, etc.). I’ve taken Flexeril 10mg, Skelexan 800mg, and now I’m on Soma 350mg. I’ve done 3-5 week physical therapy sessions at 3 different health care facilities to aid in exercises and techniques to help my neck. I take Soma in combination with Relafen 500mg (anti-inflammatory). I only take Soma 1x a day (at night), and I take Relafen 500mg twice a day. Occasionally I’ll skip taking Relafen if I forget or I just don’t feel like taking it.
Occasionally I’ll take Flexeril 10mg about an hour before I take Soma 350mg to limit my muscle spasms. I rarely take Skelexan 800mg, because of its effect is so little. Lately, I’ve been experiencing dizziness all throughout the day (episodes) when I’m at home only. When I’m in public (at school, or bank, etc.) I don’t become dizzy. Caffeine (~200mg a day) from energy drinks (rockstar, red bull, monster, etc.) seem to give me episodes of mind racing in my head, almost abnormal like. Is there anything I can take in addition or do differently to limit the side effects I experience taking these drugs (Flexeril, Skelexan, Soma, & Caffeine)? Thank you, hope to have a response soon.
AskDocWeb: Since you only experience this at home, consider what do you at home that is different from when you are at school. That may give you a hint as to the cause. If it is a concern then consult with your doctor.
Subj: Giggly and uncontrollable
I have a friend that may have been abusing Soma to get high. How long does the “euphoria” effect of Soma last? Me and other close friends suspect it was somas, but the high seemed to wear off in about 4 hours. She was incredibly giggly and uncontrollable, and she would slur her words. Then she got paranoid and kept saying she wasn’t using drugs, so we shouldn’t worry. Does this sound like soma? We ruled out alcohol and marijuana because there was no smell and her eyes weren’t blood shot. Please give me your feedback. Thanks
AskDocWeb: Soma doe not cause one to giggle for four hours nor does it cause slurred speech. It must have been something else.
Subj: Results are unpredictable
This site has opened my eyes! I’d better SLOWLY start weaning the excessive amount of Soma I take. It has been very useful in treatment of severe inherited dystonia (and chronic sleeplessness), but has caused me to become housebound because it is so unpredictable — sometimes having no effect at all, sometimes making me pass out two hours after taking it. One complicating factor Soma patients should be aware of is that eating fatty meat such as lamb or pork (especially bacon) multiplies the effects of Soma, even several hours after the medicine is taken. I know I have a long and difficult project ahead of me, but the thought of being penned up and HAVING it done to me against my will terrifies me beyond belief. I started today — 9 hours without a pill. Is there a chat room/support group for people detoxing from Soma? (And what on earth will I use for my dystonia?)
Subj: Soma medication
I’m 15 and I’m pretty sure stress from changing schools caused my back to start aching constantly. For two weeks it just was constantly stiff, but definitely bearable. Then my lower back started hurting terribly, I’d have constant pain and then sharp pain. That week I had two chiropractors do muscle simulation and adjustment, and had a few professional massages. It just wasn’t getting any better, and school was getting difficult. I finally made my mother take me to the urgent care and they gave me 90 Norco 7.5mg and 50 Skelakin as well as motrin 800mg. The norco helped somewhat, but my muscle were still crazy stiff.
My aunt gave me ten soma, and I took one and a norco and I was pain free finally! We had plans from a while ago to go to Mexico, and while we were there my aunt told us to get her some Soma. We got 6 bottles of 50 350mg soma. We gave her 4 bottles and I used a bottle in two weeks, and I was able to go to school, the pain was gone, but when I wouldn’t take the soma id just lie on the floor and cry from the pain. My back is just now getting better and I went from about 8 soma a day to one or two, and tomorrow I won’t take any because my back is pretty much pain free, just a little pain the motrin doesn’t fix. I have to admit I liked the feeling it gave me, but I took it more for the pain relief. I honestly don’t crave the Norco or Soma. I guess everyone is different.
