Subj: Soma calmed the shakes and pain
Date: 2/17/2009
I’ve been taking soma for 7 years. I thank god for soma’s. I was on some really hard drugs and a friend gave me somas one day to come down and from that day on I have not taken street drugs. The somas calmed the shakes and pain but now I’m ready to stop the somas and I’m scared to.

Subj: Concerned about weight gain
Date: 2/19/2009
I have been taking soma for many years for back/neck pain. It helps a lot! I am concerned about weight gain. Is this a true side effect?
Vanessa
AskDocWeb: A few people have reported weight gain but it is not listed as one of the side effects of Soma. It is possible that the weight gain might be caused by the result of the condition that caused them to take Soma in the first place. Getting plenty of rest is one way to put on pounds but that may be required when recovering from an injury.
Subj: Can not seem to lose the weight
Date: 2/20/2009
I have been having trouble losing weight even after hiring a personal trainer and going on a restricted diet (no white stuff). Usually, I lose weight after a baby with work but it comes off no problem. This time I can not seem to lose the weight and I am carrying an extra 50 lbs then what I normally am which is considered morbidly obese! I have been taking Soma for years for severe TMJ, my dentist prescribes them for me. My question is, can me taking 2 to 3 Soma before bedtime cause my metabolism to slow down and even make it harder for me to lose this weight? I had my thyroid checked and it is fine. I am excersizing and dieting and tracking my food online. So I am doing things the right way, I just can’t get the scale to budge, I started Dec. 28, 2008. I don’t know what else could be hindering my weight loss other than taking the Soma at night after I eat??? Any answers would be great. I will stop taking them if this is causing me to stay fat!

AskDocWeb: Weight gain is not listed as one of the side effects of Soma. One thing you might discuss with your doctor is your birth control pill (if used). Many women report difficulty in losing weight while on birth control pills.
Subj: Still good?
Date: 2/23/2009
I have some Soma that I purchased in 09/04 would it still be good to use? Thank you,
Trudy
AskDocWeb: If that was from 2004 then no, it would not be good. It has an expiration date printed on the label.

Ahmed
AskDocWeb: Soma works by blocking the nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that your brain receives through the Central Nervous System.
Subj: Car accidents
Date: 3/3/2009
I am a 38 year old female I have fibermyalgea the doctor gave me soma and I was hooked for four years. I would take about 20 a day I had several car accidents while taking them my family hated to see me come to there house because I was so missed up. I would draw up like I was a retard couldn’t walk then one day me and my brother were going to the store and I was on the soma and I was swerving all over the road and hit this lady in the rear end I was arrested for DUI first time ever in trouble that was my last day April 12/2008. I stop cold turkey. I have been taken soma for four years. The reason I stopped was I put my brother life in danger. He could have died because of me. I now have heart problems kidney and liver problems. It is not worth it. You can stop I’m living proof.

Subj: I don’t understand
Date: 3/8/2009
I have a friend that take’s soma’s and she is like in another world. I can’t even understand what she is saying. She has lost alot of weight and she also take’s oxi’s that is so sad too see. I don’t understand the intent too use drugs with out having to. Here in my area there have been too many drug overdose’s from age’s ranging 14 to 30 years of age. It has become a very sad area to live at. The addiction has made alot of them start to steal. And it’s just getting worse. Never start if you don’t have too! Just as God for help. U just numb the pain.

Subj: Uninformed Soma is a very dangerous Drug
Date: 3/9/2009
I went to rehab 5 times to stop using it. I was taking a hundred pills every two to three days. (I am forty six years old and never was addicted to drugs until I used it for neck spasms) In rehab I found out that it was actually a hypnotic tranquilizer and highly addictive. It is all over the city I live in for one dollar a pill. If abused it can have the same affect as qualude. It is a very misunderstood drug. It is an excellent drug for muscle spasm but medical professionals should use some sense when prescribing Soma. They should warn about possible addiction. I wrecked four cars, almost tore apart my family, ended up in jail on a DWI, overdosed 4 times, and I went throug thirty thousand dollars in four years. I am still dealing with repercussions of abusing the drug. I am now involved with Narcotics Anonomous. Please, understand that Soma is highly addictive and is very unpredictable. DO NOT ABUSE THIS DRUG!!!!

Subj: Kidney problems?
Date: 3/11/2009
I have problems with my mid and low back, bulging discs and muscle spasms, I’ve been taking tramodol and soma together. This works great for me. Lately though, I have had sharp pains in my mid back. Could Soma cause kidney problems? I’ve been taking it on and off for less than a year.

AskDocWeb: Information about the long-term use of Soma does not seem to be available, probably because its use is not recommended beyond three weeks. In post-marketing reports, cases of dependence, abuse, and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use. In most cases these occurred in patients with a history of addiction or who used Soma in combination with other drugs that have abuse potential. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt cessation after prolonged use.
Subj: I’m really surprised
Date: 3/15/2009
Hey my name is Caleb and I’m from TN. I have tried Somas a couple times for muscle pain and spasms when I was in high school. Now I’m 22 years old. The other night I ended up takin 4 and then those messed me up so bad I ended up taking 5 more. TO make a long story short I ended up with my wife and best friend at the Critical Care Unit at the hospital which I arrived by ambulance. I dont remember the ride there or any IVs or nothing being done. I am so thankful to be alive. Please if you take SOMAS for any reason scripted or not. Follow the directions cause I’m really surprised that I’m still alive with family.
Caleb
Subj: Please be VERY careful
Date: 3/16/2009
Dr. prescribed Soma to my husband for severe back pain. He slept well and woke up in excruciating pain, violent tremors, dillusion, – it was the most frightening day of my life. He has undergone 4 heart stents and a pacemaker/defibrilator – has had bleeding ulcer, and suffered a heart attack. I have never seen him react to a prescription like this. Please be VERY careful if this is prescribed to you. It is a dangerous narcotic and I was afraid for his life.

Subj: Seizures and memory loss
Date: 3/20/2009
I took Soma 350mg with Darvocet N-100 for 10 years. If I had known the side effects, I don’t think I would take them on a regular basis. I would have only taken it for extreme pain. I have 5 herniated cervical discs. Last October I began having seizures, and memory loss. I stopped taking the Soma and Darvocet, cold turkey. I did not have withdrawal symptoms. I am still wondering if the memory loss is permanent. I had the best memory, now my memory is horrible. I quit Soma/Darvocet last October. Now it is the middle of March. Does anyone know?

Subj: Soma works great, but
Date: 3/26/2009
Soma works great for me. I only take it at night so that I can get a good night’s rest. But can’t find a doc to refill prescription since I moved. I’m made to feel like a drug addict when I bring it up. Docs will prescribe ambien, rozerim, vicoden, percocet and darvocet, but not soma. Unable to take the hydrocodone type drugs due to nausea.
Background: Family doctor diagnosed sleeplessness as a sleep disorder and prescribed Ambien; fell asleep quickly but gave me nightmares. Doc gave me samples of other sleep meds which caused severe drowsiness the next day, or didn’t last through the night. I had Soma left over from muscle spasms due to car accident and tried 350mg at bedtime for 2 weeks. What a relief. Slept thru the night and woke up refreshed. Neck and shoulder muscles were loose and was able to move my neck from side to side upon waking. The diagnosis for the sleep disorder should have been pain from tight muscles and spasms in shoulders and neck which cause me to awaken several times during the night, as was explained to the doctor.
Bty – also tried flexeril following rotator cuff surgery/pt which caused extreme drowsiness the following day, which perplexed the surgeon. He said he never received a comment like that before; odd, since many people have told me they can’t function during the day when on flexeril. Surgeon insists I’m mistaken about flexeril, and that I should also be able to tolerate darvocet. I asked if he prescribes soma and he said absolutely not, but that if I wanted darvocet, vicoden or oxycodine, he would prescribe those. go figure.

Subj: Potassium question
Date: 4/2/2009
I have taken soma #350 for nine years now. I have two shoulder replacements, one knee and a hip replaced also fours discs fused. I use the soma to fight off muscle cramps and general pain from all the surgery’s. I got tests back from my Dr. the other day stating that I had a border line high potassium level and she out me on a low/no potassium diet. I just now see that some has potassium sulfate in it and was wondering if I should ask about changing muscle relaxers? I take 3 to 5, #35 soma a day.
