Subj: Throat pain and swelling
Date: 4/4/2009
I took half a soma 2 nights in a row for low back pain. My mother gave them to me for my back pain. On the 3rd day I noticed my whole esophagus and epiglottis being swollen and hurting. I hurt from my chest through to my back between my shoulder blades. The pain seems to be caused by the swelling in my throat. It’s been a week since I took the soma and I still have this swelling and pain. I am not sick although I have slight sinus drainage. I feel great except for this pressure and pain. Could this be from the soma? Well it go away on it’s own?
Felicia
AskDocWeb: Any swelling of the throat should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. Since this is still there a week later, you may need medical attention, please talk to your doctor about this.

Subj: Soma works better than anything else
Date: 4/5/2009
I have taken soma, well, carisoprodol, the generic for soma, for years for back pain/muscle spasm, and it works for me better than any thing else I have tried, without making me too drowsy (1/2 a flexeril knocks me out for 2 days without stopping the spasms) but I have found that over the years, if I don’t take some time off of it, usually a weekend, then I have to take much more at a time for it to work. I also think it has a rebound side effect of muscle rigidity. Now, I am pretty sure that soma is a skeletal muscle relaxer, so I don’t know why it stopped that girl’s heart… but with all drugs, I think you have to use them judiciously, i.e., take it, then do the exercises, stretching, whatever, you are supposed to be doing to maintain, which is much easier said than done, and try to break from it between.

Subj: Mixing alcohol and Soma
Date: 4/9/2009
I’ve never contributed to a site so bear with me. I was recently prescribed both Flexeril and SOMAs. I am 5’6 and very petite with breasts that are way too large for my frame. Both my Mom & Step-Mom have had breast reduction surgery when they were my age, 32. I have suffered with severe back and neck pain for years. At times I am unable to even pick up my 2yr old because of the spasms. I would like to have my insurance company pick up the tab for the surgery since I can’t afford it on my own. They have done everything from blood tests to x-rays and physical therapy to rule out any other issue. Taking the Flexeril gave me shallow breathing as well as a groggy feeling that was hard to shake in the morning. So I have starting taking SOMA only at night 350mg BUT here’s the thing I still have a couple cocktails at night and have found myself passed out on the floor of the bathroom more than once. DO NOT do what I have done as you could easily get hurt or worse die. I am working on changing my habits as that was what I used prior to medication to deal with the pain. I hope this helps anyone out there thinking of mixing alcohol and SOMAs or any muscle relaxers.

Subj: Scared of withdrawals
Date: 4/10/2009
I have been taking 6 to 7 Somas for the past 2 weeks. I’m scared that I will have wicked withdrawals. Could it be possible to have problems in the next few days? Please help? I stop taking them without doing a taper dose and I have family coming for Easter. Thanks,
Cris
AskDocWeb: Unless you are especially sensitive to it withdrawal symptoms are unlikely. You may want to keep a few on hand until you know for sure that they are no longer needed.
Subj: Addicted to Soma
Date: 4/13/2009
My mother is dangerously addicted to this drug. She takes 6-10 at a time/maybe 4 times a day and becomes this slurring, wobbly zombie. It’s sad to see. It’s ruining her life and everyone’s around her. I’ve watched her fall asleep with her face in her plate of food, show up to functions like she has drank a fifth of Jim Beam, drive and then get out barely able to stand. I’ve tried everything. I’ve been to her doctor and told her that she abuses them but she keeps giving them to her. I recently had her committed to a hospital for detox and a month later she is taking them again. It’s ruining our relationship and she is going to miss out on my wedding this year. She always so lit that she doesn’t even know what day it is. She hasn’t helped me plan any of my wedding and I don’t think right now she really even cares. She has shown up to my catering appointment barely able to talk and spilling coffee everywhere. Then when we got up to leave she almost fell. How embarrassing? How do you explain what’s wrong with your mother when she acts this way? I don’t know what else to do…I’m slowly losing my mother who use to be a vibrant, sweet, loving lady…and now she is just a zombie who is ill when she is not high. I beg anyone who has children, loved ones, anybody please look at what you will be losing if you give your life to pills…it’s just not worth it. Who wants to spend their life in bed all day…what quality of life is that? I feel like I’m losing this battle and I too will find my mother dead one day. It’s sad to know that. But honestly, it’s what will happen.

Subj: Safer alternative to narcotic pain pills
Date: 4/21/2009
Ok. I’ve taken soma off and on for yrs for various muscle and joint problems, they are in my opinion a safer less addictive alternative to narcotic pain pills, be use caution with soma. Don’t take more of them than your body can handle at a time, doses vary depending on each persons body weight and size, keep in mind they are a muscle relaxer and your heart is a muscle, you can’t just swallow a bunch of them like pain pills, you take too many doese to close together it will kill you because it will stop your heart from beating…

Subj: Re: Soma
Date: 4/26/2009
I have been taking Soma for several years. Any medication can be dangerous if mixed with other kinds od meds. For example if you are a person that has seizures it is highly recommended not to take this drug. I recently lost a close friend because she took soma and fieracet her doctor gave them to her just four days before her death.

Subj: Parkinson-like symptoms
Date: 4/28/2009
I’ve been using Soma for a number of years at bedtime, to help me sleep. Now I’m experiencing Parkenson-like symtoms as my arms move and jump about without me thinking about it. And it seems to getting worse. I’m spilling things a lot and my walking gate viers to the right leaving me to fall onto walls. Please help!

AskDocWeb: Sounds like it is time for you to check in with your doctor to find out what is going on. You definitely don’t want to be driving when you experience something like that.
Subj: Terrible cramp in hand
Date: 5/2/2009
I was prescribed Soma yesterday for my severe neck pain. I had an ACDF in August of 08. I have had increasing neck pain since then. Finally, yesterday a different doctor said it was a severe neck spasm. This diagnosis made since. I took one when I left the doctor’s office. My husband drove to the grocery store because I did not know how Soma would effect me. Well, it did absolutely nothing. I get better relief from my Tylenol. Unfortunately, Tylenol does not stop the pain enough for me to function normally. I took another at bed-time just to see if it would work. It did not work either. I woke up the usual 5-6 times in pain. My question is this, when I got up this morning I had a terrible cramp in my left hand. I am right handed. I cannot really do anything with my left hand as this is the side effected by my ruptured disc in my neck, thus surgery. Would the Soma cause this pain in my hand? This is a pain I have never felt before. It seems to be creeping up my arm as well. Mainly on my thumb side. I am not going to take the Soma anymore because it has zero effect. I will call the doctor on Monday, but I would like to know if this is a side effect of Soma.
Linda
AskDocWeb: Cramps in any part of the body are not listed as a side effect of Soma.

Subj: Please help by sharing your experience

I am looking for anyone that has had any trouble getting off of soma’s after taking them for an extended period of time. My mother had been on the drug for the last year and a half, also she has been taking morphine for about the same time. recently she woke and mistakenly grabbed the wrong pill bottle and took to many was rushed to the hospital and treated. After about 4 days in the hospital she came home. Only feeling tired and sleepy while recovering. The docters said she didn’t O.D. just had too many. They decided to take her off of it because of this occurrance. About 5 days later after falling suddenly to the ground a few times and going into a complete state of delirum my sister decided to take her in, well she had no choice my mother simply had NO idea who my sister was. Again, she was treated and sent home, 2 days later, today my sister woke to my mother having a siezure. The doctors believe its all due to the dependency that she had built on the soma’s after taking them for so long. If anyone that has been through anything like this, please can you help answering just a few question; How long does this go on for? Is any of this perminent? Is there a way to get her off the soma’s and morphine safely without adding another potentially addicting drug? I would greatly appreciate any insight. Thank you.

Subj: Can somas effect birth control?
Date: 5/20/2009
Can somas effect the efficiency of birth control?
Shannon
AskDocWeb: There are drugs that reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills but Soma is not one of them. Here is a short list of the drugs most often mentioned in discussions about this problem.
- Some Antibiotics: [rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)]
- Some Antivirals for HIV infection: nelfinavir (Viracept), lopinavir (Kaletra), and others
- Antiepileptics/mood stabilizers: felbamate, carbamazepine (Tegretol) (Felbatol), lamotrigine (Lamictal), phenytoin (Dilantin), primidone (Mysoline), Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), topiramate (Topamax)
- Antifungals: griseofulvin (Gris-Peg)
- Barbiturates: phenobarbital (in Donnatal), secobarbital (Seconal), butalbital, (Fiorinal, Esgic Plus)
- Some Herbal Products: St. John’s Wort
- Other drugs: modafinil (Provigil)
If you must take one of the above medications, use a backup method of birth control, such as condoms, while you are taking the interfering drug and for 2 weeks after finishing the drug. If you must take the above drugs on a long-term basis, you should check with your health care provider because you may need to consider an alternative form of contraception. Note: this is list is not all-inclusive and other drugs may also reduce the effectiveness of your birth control pills. Read more feedback about Soma.
