Subj: They dish out soma like candy
Date: 6/23/2009
Hi, I’m a 32 yo male and iv been overly dosed by my doctor on xanax. I ask all the doctors for whatever I want and they give it to me, I now have totaled 2 cars in 8 days I’ve gotten 2 dui tickets and have been to jail a few times. I black out when I eat xanax this is all cathching up to me, is it me or is it the doctors prescribing 240mg a month seems to be excisive I mean I like heting messed up but I don’t realize its that bad. And oh they dish out soma like candy to, those have put me in the hospital 4 times. I do need help and I am seeking it. I guess I just wanted to let people beware of how easy it is to get legal drugs. There should be a more strict law. Thanks for reading,

Subj: Itching?
Date: 6/24/2009
I take one Soma tablet per day for back and spine problems. My arms have been itching to the point where I have scratched them raw. Could it be the Soma?

AskDocWeb: Itching is not listed as one of the side effects of Soma. If it lasts more than three days or becomes a concern we would check with your health care provider.

Subj: Chemical reaction?
Date: 6/29/2009
Soma has helped me since I had neck surgery 6 months ago. I only take 1-2 per day as needed, which is usually only 3 days a week. I would like to know what Soma does to the brain because I feel calm, happy and overall well when taking it. I deliberately don’t take it as often as I am allowed because I don’t want to damage my liver or kidneys or get addicted, however I would like to understand the chemical reaction it causes to see if I can find some other way to get the peaceful feeling it gives me without the heavy medication. Any suggestions?

AskDocWeb: That may be impossible without resorting to other prescription drugs. Soma acts directly on the central nervous system to block the pain sensations (nerve impulses) that are sent to the brain from throughout the body.

Subj: Addicted to Soma
Date: 6/30/2009
My husband takes soma and loritab due to a shoulder injury that several docs say cannot be stabilized. He has taken loritab for several years and been ok but a doc in Houston convinced him to add soma to it several months ago and now we are on the verge of divorce. I cannot begin to describe what soma can do to someone. He is laying in bed passed out again right now. I think he takes about 20 a day and it is strictly from becoming addicted to them so quickly. I am very scared for him but he just doesn’t get it. He is going into rehab next week.

Subj: How long does it take?
Date: 7/3/2009
How long does it take before you feel the full effect of Soma 250mg? How long does it take to get in your system? I have been taking it for 3 days and I still have a lot of pain. Please let me know. Thank You,

AskDocWeb: You should be feeling the full effect of Soma within a couple of hours. If the pain is too much then contact your doctor.

Subj: Soma side effects
Date: 7/4/2009
I have degenerative disk disease along with ostoarthritis. My doctor prescribed Soma for the accompanied muscle spasms. I have a terrible agitated reaction to any anihistomines. Agitated, sleeplessness…just all the opposite of what they are suppse to do. Last night I took 2 Soma and 800 mg of Ibuprophen at bed time. I got the same reaction I do with anti histomines. It felt so awful. Also I get bad pain in my legs when I take Soma. I had PAD but had stents so that is better but not perfect. I can walk fine but not very far. To sum it up, why do I get the agitation, leg pain, after the horrid feeling of aggitation just like with anti histomines? Finally, I went so sleep and slept through the night. I will not take it again as why take something that makes you feel bad. I would just like to know why Soma causes the same side effects as an anti histomine and causes the ache in my legs. Do they call them “pain pills” because they cause pain? It does ease the muscle spasmns in my back…but at what expense? I have a choice…pain in my back or pain in my legs with agitation. It’s a no brainer…don’t take them. Thank you!

Bewildered Sharon

AskDocWeb: Soma is primarily a muscle relaxant and works best as a pain reliever when the pain is caused by strains, sprains, or other injury to your muscles.

Subj: Long term consequences
Date: 7/6/2009
I have been taking soma 350 mg tablets, 3 at bed for tailbone issues and now my dr called and said that it’s too much to be taking and cut it back to 1 pill at bedtime. First off my condition is severe I cannot fall asleep without this medication… so my question is are there long term consequences from taking this medication? Because I was never informed of them if there is…

AskDocWeb: Information about the long-term use of Soma does not seem to be available, probably because its use is not recommended beyond three weeks. In post-marketing reports, cases of dependence, abuse, and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use. In most cases these occurred in patients with a history of addiction or who used Soma in combination with other drugs that have abuse potential. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt cessation after prolonged use.

Subj: Body stores this drug?
Date: 7/9/2009
I was told that your body stores this drug in (a dormant state) your liver, and there it resides in your body which can be reactivated at a later date without warning or symptoms. I would appreciate a reply if anyone has had any problems such as this. Thank You

AskDocWeb: Soma is completely out of your system within two weeks.

Subj: Severe muscle weakness
Date: 7/9/2009
My father-in-law has been on soma for 6-7 years and had reached the point that he was taking 15-20 pills plus that many lorcets every day. He also continued to work for several years while he was taking these high doses. He has recently quit using both, but over the last year, he has begun to have severe muscle weakness in his arms and legs. Drs. are now doing tests for Lou Gehrigs because of the muscle weakness. Can extensive overuse of somas cause these kind of symptoms? It makes sense to me because they are a muscle relaxant.

AskDocWeb: Muscle weakness is not listed as a possible side effect of Soma but that doesn’t rule out the possibility. According to the APhA Drug Information Handbook, Soma has the potential to produce physical dependence with prolonged use and may have withdrawal symptoms with death as a potential endpoint. Discontinuing the drug after extensive use should be supervised in a hospital in the fashion appropriate for barbiturates, glutethimide and other such agents.

Subj: Acting weird and slurring my speech
Date: 7/15/2009
Hello: I have been taking 4 350 MG soma a day, 4 MG of xanax, 30 MG of R Restoril and 100 MG of promethazine a day. I had two incidents where my roommate said that at night after taking my pills, I was acting weird. Both times I fell out of bed and could not get back in bed. I was slurring my speech, and could not walk w/o falling. It seems to happen over an hour after taking my pills and with no warning. The said part is, I wake up the next day and remember nothing from the night before. I don’t drink at all. So what is happening to me? Is my roommate over reacting? Can Soma cause this? What’s even worse is that I feel great and pain free the nest morning with no hangover. Thanks,

AskDocWeb: One of the symptoms of an overdose is slurring of speech so report this to your doctor.

Subj: Speech is slurred
Date: 7/19/2009
My cousin takes Soma and I think it really helps her but she sometimes has it really effect her negatively. Her speech is slurred, she has little to no motor control, she can’t really walk properly, and she is just…not really all there. This really makes me nervous sometimes, and I get really panicky when I’m around people who are intoxicated in any fashion. Can someone help me?

AskDocWeb: As we just said above, slurred speech is one of the symptoms of an overdose so please report this to your doctor.

Subj: Accidental death?
Date: 7/24/2009
Soma seems to be a potentially harmful. I have a sister who had been prescribed Soma for at the least a minimum 15 years. She would also get 90 day supplies at a time. Recently she passed away and it was ruled an accidental death. She was addicted to this drug and under the care of a physician who also prescribed other medications such as anti-depressants and Motrin 800 mg, and a barbituate was prescribed prior to her death. Obviously she had a physician who should not even have a license. I tried to tell my sister that this was a bad drug, but she trusted her physician and she is now gone. She never would have purposely tried to harm herself. Her personality changed and there was no reasoning with her. She had slow reflexes and seem to always talk as if she was tired. Soma is suppose to be short-term. How can a physician justify prescribing this type of med for so many years and then add other meds to her regiment and expect her to fully understand the possible implications (such as death) to someone on this drug for so many years. There are more people dying of prescribed medicines, then those out on the streets shooting up! What needs to be done to stop this madness? My sister was only 49 years old. She left a husband, sister, father and twin nephews who loved her very much and now due to bad prescribing habits, we will not be able to share the rest of our lives with her.

Subj: Soma abuse
Date: 8/10/2009
I have been taking 1/2 to 1- 350mg Soma almost daily as needed for back/shoulder pain. It seems to help me function when the pain was so bad I could not perform my daily activities. Ibuprofen, though not generally considered to be dangerous can also be bad for you if taken in larger quantities for long periods of time…so please be careful with that one, even if you can buy it over the counter. I have read many of the posts here, and have seen that many people are heavily abusing this drug. I can not imagine taking more than one of these pills at a time, let alone 100’s in just a couple of days. I am sorry to see that people are getting addicted to a drug that is so helpful for those that do use it correctly. If you have to take more than one at a time, you are abusing this drug. Soma is a GOOD drug for those who need the help, and don’t abuse it. I also noticed people are taking other pain meds that are opiate based along with the soma, if you are in a serious injury, I could see this working for a short time, but the opiates are also very addictive and dangerous. Please use common sense, if you are taking hand fulls of any medication there is something WRONG.
