Subj: Excessive use of Soma
Date: 11/10/2009
I’ve been taking SOMA for several years. It started out as a prescription for muscle pain and spasms due to a rotator cuff injury. Needless to say the shoulder is as good as new but I can’t stop taking the SOMA. Same story as many have posted. It’s addicting and I’m addicted. My question, however, is this: I am experiencing pain in my lower back (right side, low). It feels like a pulled muscle but it’s been painful for over 2 weeks. It should have “healed” by now. My concern is that it is perhaps a kidney issue. I don’t intend to make this sound like a diagnosis but would like to know what excessive SOMA use can do to the kidneys. Please help.
John
AskDocWeb: Soma is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys, thus caution should be taken if patients have a compromised kidney or liver function. This is important to avoid the excess accumulation of the drug in the body. Information about the long-term use of Soma does not seem to be available, probably because its use is not recommended beyond three weeks. In post-marketing reports, cases of dependence, abuse, and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use. In most cases these occurred in patients with a history of addiction or who used Soma in combination with other drugs that have abuse potential. Withdrawal symptoms have been reported following abrupt cessation after prolonged use.
Subj: BEWARE!
Date: 11/23/2009
DON’T take Soma!!! This was one of the drugs I was given along with narcotic painkillers (opiates) for chronic back pain. Over the 7 years this was given to me, I lapsed into a coma and wasn’t supposed to survive. This is a very dangerous and addictive drug despite it’s benign classification. BEWARE!!! Learn better coping mechanisms rather than start on chemicals that are foreign to your body.

Subj: Passed out
Date: 12/6/2009
Once I took a few somas at a time and passed out while sweeping the kitchen. My husband had to carry me to bed and I don’t remember a thing. I had bruises all over from falling. My problem is that I take them recreationally when I don’t have the klonzapam that I am prescribed to. They help me relax quite a bit. I know that its stupid but I have to medicate myself somehow.

Subj: Muscle pain is gone
Date: 12/10/2009
Glad I found this site the Internet is abundant w good info. I was not looking for a combo to get high on today, I just wondered if I could take a soma for the miserable muscle aches and shivering I’d had from a long night violent stomach flu. I had taken my usual Xanax but I couldn’t sleep. I was miserable! My friend had given me a couple somas for back pain some time back. After seeing these responses I felt sure I would not die from one Xanax followed by one soma. Half hour later muscle pain gone and slept soundly for several hours. Ahhhhhh. I think I may survive. Flu sucks! I’m going to keep some soma around for this purpose.
Sally
AskDocWeb: There is a moderately serious drug interaction when Soma is used with Xanax. The effects of this combination may synergistically increase the center nervous system- and/or respiratory depressing effects of these drugs, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Please consult with your doctor to make sure the combination would safe for your condition.
Subj: Soma tolerance
Date: 12/16/2009
In my opinion, Soma does provide wonderful relief of pain & anxiety. I am prescribed it for both. That said, I find that Soma tolerance builds very quickly and easily gets out of hand. I find I am forced to take more & more to get any relief at all, & once you’re on it for a while, @ higher doses, it it very tricky to get off of. I personally wouldn’t recommend this medication be taken for long periods of time, ( i.e. – more than a few weeks ). If you plan to go beyond this, be prepared for tolerance and potential unpleasant withdrawals if you want to quit. It’s a great medicine that works well, but the effects are very short after a while, & you might regret ever starting. I say, make your decision wisely, & if u start to find yourself needing to take 3 or more at a time, and you will, get off of it right then, before it spirals out of control & u are taking huge amounts a day. This medication is easily obtainable online, It happens to a lot of people. It’s a bad place to be. You will probably find that you wish you’d never taken it at all. This doesn’t apply to everyone, but good luck and God Bless.

Subj: Trouble breathing
Date: 12/26/2009
I started soma 10 days ago I am having trouble breathing it feels like my throat is swelled up could it be from soma and should I stop taking it?
Mike
AskDocWeb: Please contact your doctor about any trouble breathing because that is one of the signs of an allergic reaction and could pose a life threatening situation.
Subj: Serious dizziness and shallow breathing
Date: 12/31/2009
I am twenty two years old and have some serious back issues. I was prescribed Soma and Loratab. They both are very affective, however I DO NOT recommend them being taken together. Serious dizziness and shallow breathing may occur.
**Soma has helped me**
Subj: Drug test
Date: 1/2/2010
Is there a drug test I can purchase that will recognize soma in one’s system?
Curious
AskDocWeb: Soma doesn’t show up on any of the home testing kits, that we know of but if readers find one, please to share it.
Subj: Bad experience
Date: 1/8/2010
I used soma for 1 day (4 pills). Once I allowed myself to sleep, I slept for 15 hours. I knew I had to drive so I stopped taking the pills. I was dizzy…very dizzy. Couldn’t move my head without feeling like I would fall over. Also, while I was sleeping, I had reflux, actual vomit in my throat. I continued to have the reflux even after 24 hours of stopping the pills. Do not take this medication.

Subj: Any long term issues with Soma?
Date: 1/15/2010
I was injured at work in April of ’07 and have had both cervical and lumbar fusion. During this time I was prescribed everything from Darvocet to Dilauded and when I would stop taking them, especially Dilauded, I went through withdrawals. I spoke to my Dr. and told him I wanted something that would help, but was not a narcotic so he prescribed Soma. I was taking it off and on until this past November when I had hardware removed from my left lumbar because of a nerve issue. I only take 2 – 3 pills a day and seem to be fine. I just would like to know long term issues with this drug. It does help especially after PT or in the morning when my back is the worst. If anybody has any info, please let me know. I also have a history of panic attack, but have not been on medication for them for about a year now. Thanks

Subj: Very effective med for pain
Date: 1/31/2010
Regarding the mention of a link to soma and Parkinsons. I started taking soma when I turned 40, about 8 years ago, after a severe back injury. Been taking it ever since. Within 6 months of beginning it, my hands began to shake alot. All the time. Before that, my handwriting was very nice and clear. After tho, it became like a doc would write. Not readable. I can’t hold my hand out and have it be steady anymore. Plus, at the same time, my vision went from very good, to blurry. At 40, I suddenly had to go buy cheap reading glasses of different strengths. Lower ones for driving and watching TV, higher ones for reading. I believe there is a definite link there. Soma DOES have some bad side effects for some people like me. But….with the awful low back pain I must endure, and because I do not want to use strong opiate pain killers, Soma is the only one that works for the pain. I’ve tried everything. I have a tolerance built up for sure. I use about 10 per day. Not nearly as bad as some I’ve read here tho. I think that if you just take it as directed tho, it really shouldn’t be a big deal. Unless you had my bad luck with side effects. It’s a very effective med for pain and stress too, used in moderation. Beats taking high doses of oxy as many do. Now THAT is hard to kick!!!

Subj: Overdose on Soma and mixing with clonazepam
Date: 2/12/2010
My brother recently passed away, and I believe he OD’d on Soma mixed with clonazepam, or just on Soma. How many would one need to overdose on Soma? My brother was 57, not overweight, but he did have some minor health problems.
SDC
AskDocWeb: Taking any amount over what is prescribed is considered an overdose. The number of pills it would take would vary based on age, weight, medical condition, and a wide range of tolerance for the medication.
Subj: Soma relaxes me
Date: 2/18/2010
i have been taking soma for three years. I always take 6 @ a time per day. it relaxes me but i can still function.i wake up refreshed. the pills dont seem to hurt me.i dont want to od.i would know if something were wrong, right?
Tracy
AskDocWeb: Please talk to your doctor about your use of Soma as soon as possible. Of course it relaxes you. Soma depresses your central nervous system and too much could lead to coma and then death. The maximum recommended length of time Soma can be used safely is 3 weeks. Using it longer than that may indicate drug abuse.
Subj: Healing process for muscles/nerves?
Date: 2/24/2010
I have been prescribed Soma. Went to a Spine Specialist to get a 2nd opinion on lower back pain and shooting leg pains I have been having the past month and a half. He said that my Lumbar MRI looked pretty good and he didn’t feel that my back/sciatica symptoms were coming from any disc. He said that a nerve could be irritated or a muscle out of whack – and to take Soma, Advil, and do 3 weeks of physical therapy. My question is this – is Soma part of the healing process for a muscle/nerve issue? I have been getting better the past few weeks and I want to know if I can continue getting better with just physical therapy and advil. I’d rather not take Soma if it just for the pain, but I will take it if it is needed to help heal me. Any thoughts? I’m scared to take this pill, obviously.
Scott
AskDocWeb: Soma is used as part of a combined treatment, with rest and physical therapy, to treat painful muscle conditions. The relaxation of muscles caused by Soma helps increase blood flow and healing. Read more feedback about Soma. Soma report – 26 – 27 – 28 – Page 29 – 30 – 31 – 32 – Last Page 48
