Subj: Detoxing from somas?
Date: 3/17/2010
What are the side affects from detoxing from somas?

BB
AskDocWeb: People who have used Soma for a long period of time have reported abdominal cramps, chilliness, headache, nausea, and insomnia when stopping suddenly or quitting cold turkey. Do not stop taking Soma without talking to your doctor first.

Subj: Damage to your heart and liver?
Date: 4/1/2010
I have been taking soma for a couple of years now and I have other health issues and recently I was told by a friend that long use of soma could do damage to your heart and liver? My dr. really has not answered that question one way or the other and I would like to know if I could get a straight answer about this. He keeps refilling my prescription so I assume it is okay but now I am not sure he is right. Please help. Thank you.

Pam
AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, the recommended maximum duration of Soma use is two to three weeks. Soma is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys so those are the two organs to watch for possible long-term damage. If you have any problems urinating or have to get up in the middle of the night frequently to urinate then contact your doctor.

Subj: Bad nightmares
Date: 4/7/2010
I am currently taking Soma and Welbutrin and recently have been experiencing bad nightmares several times/night. I’m not sure which drug or the combination of is causing this.

Gina

AskDocWeb: Nightmares are not listed as a side effect of Soma but there are quite a few reports of nightmares by those taking Wellbutrin (Zyban).

Subj: Ugly medication
Date: 4/15/2010
For my family Soma is an ugly, ugly medication. My husband has used it for 10 years for chronic back pain. In addition he was injured five years ago, and has had two back surgeries. He will lie cheat and steal to get the Soma. He binge takes it…and I expect one of these days he will Soma overdose, but he won’t listen to anyone, and his doctor just keeps giving him more. The dementia is a definite sign of Soma overusage (and depression) which my husband has been diagnoised with.

Subj: Itching with soma?
Date: 4/16/2010
I have been taking soma for a few months due to arthritis & fibermyalgia-like symptoms and tension headaches. I haven’t noticed any problems other that reduced effectiveness if I take it more than twice a week, however, my husband was prescribed soma this week due to herniated disks and has been itching constantly. I itch all the time due to shingles I had two years ago, so I’m not sure if the soma is making it worse. Has anyone else experienced itching with soma?

Subj: Drug test
Date: 4/17/2010
I am currently on suboxone to get off pain medication. (roxicets) I have to take a urone test every month. I sprained my ankle and have been having alot of trouble with it. I cant take any pain medication because I dont want to take the chance, I had such a major addiction. a friend at work gave me a few somas because I couldn’t take time off and was having alot of pain. I go to my suboxone doc. in a cpl. days, and was wondering what soma shows up as on a drug test. It’s just a standard test. people have told me it shows up as opiates and some said it shows as benzos can you tell me what it will show up as on my test? I have been worrying and dont want to lose my prescriptin for suboxone because it has really been helping my addiction. can yu tell me what soma will show up as on a regular 7 panel drug test?

Lisa

AskDocWeb: Unless the Soma was combined with Codeine it will not show up on a standard drug screen. Even the 10-panel drug screen does not test for muscle relaxants. The 10-panel tests for:

  • Amphetamine
  • Barbiturates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Methadone
  • Methamphetamine
  • Opiates
  • Phencyclidine
  • Tricyclic Antidepressants

Most don’t use a 10-panel test because of the extra expense.

Subj: Less emotional and less caring
Date: 4/24/2010
I, personally, have not used Soma. However, I do have a question for anyone that might know. My significant other started taking Soma a few years ago for back pain. He is a recovering alcoholic and hasn’t drank for 19 years. But, I know that he has abused the Soma and Loratab for sometime that he was prescribed. Now that he has been on the Soma for sometime, he seems less emotional and less caring. Does anyone know if this is a long term side effect of using the drug?

Sandy

Subj: Soma helps with muscle spasms
Date: 4/27/2010
I have taken Soma for a long time now, and it does help the muscle spasms in my lower back. I have had the nerves in my back burnt twice, but as you know the nerves come back. It was my best relief of anything I have done by having the nerves killed. I know I’m not hooked on Soma, because there are days I dont even take them, but I know if my back starts hurting to much, to take one. No side effects for me. They so make you sleepy. I try to take one at night if I need it.

Subj: Bladder control
Date: 5/4/2010
Will soma help with bladder control like Oxybutinin. They are both muscle relaxers but work on different muscles. Is it possible that it might help a little bit?

Bev

AskDocWeb: One of the possible side effects of Soma is the loss of bladder control. Although the incidence rate is not known, this is listed as one of the side effects that should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: Accidental overdose
Date: 5/10/2010
Especially for the high school boy looking for a way to help friend, trust me, I overdosed by accident and don’t remember. My son found me in the kitchen paralyzed to the counter and could not respond. He called 911 and saved my life. God Bless you for trying to help your friend. Let him know that it may seem fun and an escape, but he needs to know he could so easily die from this drug. It has a very intoxicating effect and I do not even remember what happened. It is sort of like drinking a really strong drink of alcohol and the difference is it stops the muscles from being able to respond. I am not an expert, just want to warn.

Subj: Neuromyotonia
Date: 5/19/2010
I have been on zanaflex for four year they believe the condition to be Neuromyotonia, it did little to help. I saw a Dr filling in for my normal dr and she changed me to Soma, vast improvement in a short period of time. In addition it did not cause hypotension and weekness the Zanaflex did. My sleep has improved markedly. As I have a life long condition I am concerned about building a tollerance. I know the med is for short term use but what are the chances I will have to keep increasing the dose. I take 4, 325 pills per day along with percocet, ms contin and kolonipin.

Hezmana

AskDocWeb: That presents a problem because it sounds like you may be starting with the maximum dosage. You may want to ask your doctor about a combination of Diamox and Lyrica. Some people with neuromyotonia have tried this combination with good results. It has the advantage of a good safety profile and no addiction potential.

Neuromyotonia, also known as Isaacs’ syndrome, is spontaneous muscular activity resulting from repetitive motor unit action potentials of peripheral origin.

Subj: Soma-coma
Date: 5/20/2010

Subj: Soma, Xanax and Elavil?
Date: 5/26/2010
My wife has just been perscribed 1/2-1 350 mg. tab 4 times per day. She is also taking xanax and Elavil. Should she be taking the Soma? Should she take it with her other pills at night (Xanax and Elavil)?

Bob

AskDocWeb: There is a moderately serious drug interaction listed between Elavil (amitriptyline) and Xanax (alprazolam).

There is a moderately serious drug interaction listed between Elavil (amitriptyline) and Soma (carisoprodol).

There is a moderately serious drug interaction listed between Xanax (alprazolam) and Soma (carisoprodol)

In each of these three drug interactions there is a concern that the central nervous system and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to tell your doctor about all medications that you are taking.

Subj: Soma works well
Date: 6/20/2010
I have used Soma for a couple of years now, due to a shoulder injury, and it has worked well for me. I do from time to time, get a little dizzy, but I usually only take it at night. Soma greatly relaxes my shoulder and arm, and surrounding muscles, so that it does not hurt so much, and there are very few muscle spasms now. Thanks,

Peggy

Subj: Addictive and is habit forming
Date: 6/20/2010
I have taken soma and i know many others who have taken it and are sitll taking it. Soma is highly addictive and is habit forming. I know a few people who are addicted and when they do not take it they say that they feel depressed. But, I do not know anyone who has OD’d on Soma and the people i know who take it can easily take 8-10 350mg pills in one dose and the high lastst them only about an hour. I’ve noticed that if they later on in the day as they take more to keep their high going..they get slurred speech and they shake. but they fall asleep before they can OD on it.

Soma

AskDocWeb: There are serious side effects from overdosing on Soma. Subj: Harmful drug?
Date: 6/21/2010
Hi there, im a senior in high school and ive been taking soma the whole time for my displaced wrist and thumb, my side effects from it really benifit since every time i pop 2 pills i feel relaxed .. calm.. and can still do things around my life .. but in other words , its not a harmfull drug at all…its like getting a nice “body-high” cause your still operative ..

Niko

AskDocWeb: Before you jump to conclusions about the safety of this drug, you might consider why Soma is only available by prescription. In the clinical trials serious side effects were observed in some patients including lack of bladder control, difficulty breathing, fever, severe weakness, changes in vision, swelling, skin rash, closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; paralysis (loss of feeling), extreme agitation, tremor; red, black, or bloody stools; and blood in the vomit. Most of these symptoms require emergency medical attention. Of course there are benefits but there are also risks in taking any prescription drug. Read more feedback about Soma.
