Subj: Uncontrollable craving to eat
Date: 6/27/2010
I have searched around for an answer to this question and I noticed that the negative remarks about the link between Soma and overweightness are incorrect. Soma DOES cause a gain in weight, however, that happens indirectly. I am not sure if the drug itself changes the metabolism or the amount of fat retention. However, once the effect of the dose of Soma has kicked in, a sudden surge of strong craving for food kicks in. That craving is almost uncontrollable. It happens even if I have recently eaten. So, as a biproduct of the consumption of this drug, if awake, the desire to eat is the driver for the weight gain.

Subj: Chronic bronchitis and asthma improved
Date: 7/1/2010
My husband was prescribed Soma after an auto accident. We noticed after he began the soma his chronic bronchitis and asthma was finally under control. No asthma attacks no coughing attacks. His asthma medication did not have this good of an effect. I was wondering how this is possible that soma could help his asthma and bronchitis?

Subj: Stay with the recommended dosage
Date: 7/2/2010
I have been taking soma for about 18 years now due to an industrial accident. I have stayed within the “3 a day” realm of taking the pill. I have been without the med for up to a week, (when I have run out), with no real side effects. I have been taking soma with a half tab of 500mg of oxycodon for the past 8 years and with no addiction or side effects. I have always stayed within or below the recommended dosage. Just had a blood test for liver and kidney and all were normal. Stay within the recommended dosages and you should be fine. Go over and you are just asking for it!

Subj: Retrograde amnesia
Date: 7/4/2010
I am taking soma 350 at bed time along with seroquel & Xanax. I have experiencing episodic muscle spasm & joint tightness lately accompanied by intolerable pain. Soma 250 mg at bedtime & my cogwheel rigidity episodes during sleep is 75% less. However, on my 4th night of Soma I had retrograde amnesia. I had a sound sleep through the night but I also had an initial lapse of memory prior. My doctor advised me to reduce Soma to half a tablet.

Subj: Soma DUI
Date: 7/11/2010
Ive taken soma on and off for over 5 years. At one point I was taking 120 per week. I can take 6 or more at a time. Im not bragging, Im just saying Ive never experienced any withdrawl symptoms, ever. However, I did get a DUII for driving on them. I dont even remember getting in the car. Please, dont drive on this medication. Ive taken vicodin, percocet, ativan, klonipin, etc and have never had a dependency on anything but the opiates which Ive kicked. Ive had 6 surgeries and 8 hospitalizations (thus the meds). Guess what Im trying to say is DONT DRIVE on soma. Its been a year of hell for me with this DUII and all that goes with it, the money, groups, etc. Please, be safe.

Subj: Is Soma the right medication?
Date: 7/12/2010
well i suffer from RLS(running leg syndrom) and it’s not just my legs it’s kind of my whole body when ever i go to sleep i am mentaly exhausted but my body won’t stay still. My muscles get this weird feeling and i jerk idk what is going on and i heard from my aunt who takes soma that they could help with that but i didn’t want to take it without a medical oppinion first so is soma the right medication for me?

AskDocWeb: Only your doctor can determine if Soma is the right medication for you. Soma has helped some people with RLS but others have reported that it makes the symptoms of RLS worse.
Subj: Soma withdrawal?
Date: 7/18/2010
I have only taken this medication for about 1-2 week intervals at a time. However, they relax me so much that I often will take 3 or 4 of them (350 mg) at night to fall asleep (trying to fight a pretty wicked sleep disorder). I have only taken them for the last couple of days, but am starting to feel withdrawal from weening off them. Symptoms feel similar to benzo withdrawal (less extreme obviously, but a lot of anxiety). Is it possible that I’m withdrawing after only taking them for a few days, or is this psychosomatic at this point?
J444
AskDocWeb: Withdrawal symptoms are unlikely after taking Soma for only a few days. Remember that no withdrawal symptoms are listed for Soma so it may be psychosomatic or something else entirely.

Sally (page 29), you’re a drug addict and soma can stop your heart. The heart is a muscle and soma is a muscle relaxer. Get in a rehab.

Subj: Difficulty concentrating and memory loss
Date: 7/30/2010
Was prescribed Soma and Lortab after back injury at work 12 weeks ago. Although I hate taking medications, it did indeed help my back pain moreso than the Lortab. However, I’ve noticed progressive difficulty concentrating and memory loss. I am no longer able to complete a simple Sudoku puzzle. I do not remember watching TV shows. Does anyone know whether or not the effects wear off and how long it takes? I feel like my brain is slowed to a crawl. I ended up in ICU last week after experiencing a sudden onset thunderclap headache. Neurosurgeon told me to STOP TAKING SOMA as it has caused deaths. They found blood in my lumbar tap but no reason for it. I can’t help but wonder if Soma is the cause.

Subj: Soma success story
Date: 7/31/2010
I have used Soma for over 5 years and maybe as much as 7. I have FMS, spinal and cervical stenosis and went through several trials of different medications including other muscle relaxers that just didn’t work or were too strong. Now, I do believe that there are those of us that easily get addicted to certain meds and those of us that don’t. Fortunately I am in the 2nd group of people as I have been able to wean myself off of even narcotics without any side effects.
I use 350mg 3 times daily to control my pain. My doctor did add hydrocodone to the regimine last year but only twice a day as I cannot take NSAIDs any longer. I am walking 3.5 miles per day and have my pain under control. It is not gone by any means but I can live with it and I think my walking regiment proves it. I know that many docs are afraid of prescribing it long term but mine says if I come in at least every 6 months for a pain assessment he will continue to prescribe it if it continues to work. That being said: taking an overdose for any reason is just wrong. Yadi, I hope your husband lived and if he did he needs to get help b/c taking 10 Soma means he is in the 1st group of people who get addicted easily and that is a condition which warrants further investigation. I am stuck with a chronic pain condition but blessed that I can get enough relief to live a normal life.

Subj: Passing out and talking like I was drunk
Date: 8/2/2010
I used soma for at least 4 years for neck pain and fibromyalgia symptoms. Although it is not a narcotic I quickly realized that taking more then the suggested dosage made me feel great, like a really high feeling. Not long after I started passing out and talking like I was drunk. And not making sense. I also started shaking a lot and friends started to get worried. It was when my boyfriend found me on the kitchen floor for the 3rd time and threatened to leave me that I decided to stop. I read up on it and found out that abusing soma can stop your heart. No high is worth losing ur life or the ones you love. Some is a dangerous drug.

Subj: Soma reduced pain and allowed me to sleep
Date: 8/6/2010
I am not an addictive personality, and try and avoid ANY medications. However the pain in my head following the surgery I had 18 days ago is incredibly bad. I was given Darvocet and Morphine in the hospital, for 4 days, then Morphine and Soma in the Rehab center for 7 days. I tried some Darvocet a couple days ago, and had severe vomiting. After trying to cope with just Aleve and Motrin, I finally got a Soma script yesterday, and took 1/2 a pill before bedtime. It reduced the pain and allowed me to sleep. I plan to continue with over the counter meds daytime and 1/2 pill Soma at night.

Subj: Dependant on Soma
Date: 8/8/2010
I have taken Soma for about 10 years and have been hospitalized for overdosing about 20 times, it is severely addictive and dangerous when abused. I started taking it after two bad accidents in which I sustained neck and back spasms. It is a good medication if taken as prescribed which I did at first but slowly got hooked and dependant on it. The withdrawal symptoms I had when I quit taking soma were depression, headaches, insomnia severly, and very bad cravings even months after I quit. My advice is don’t take the medication if you have an addictive personality or plan on taking it for more than 3 weeks.

Subj: IBS and headache
Date: 8/9/2010
I take soma for about a year now for pain associated with arthritis and fibromyalgia and migraines. My doc says it is perfectly safe to take nightly so that I can sleep thru the pain. I don’t feel addicted to it, I don’t crave it, or if I don’t take it one night because I’m not hurting that bad, I don’t crave it. It does help take the edge off the pain so I can sleep. The only side effects I’ve noticed are IBS is worse and when I first started taking it, it gave me a headache the following morning. If I haven’t had any for about a week, the first one I take makes me a bit dizzy and loopy. after that, I don’t feel any effects from it. I don’t have any problems being lethargic or drowsy during the day. I can even take them during the day if I need to and I seem to function fine. I never take more than 2 a day. usually no more than 5 a week.

AskDocWeb: Now that you can admit that you have a problem isn’t it time to talk to your doctor about this? It is quite possible that if you don’t get help, at some point you may overdose and die.

Subj: Weaning off Soma
Date: 8/24/2010
I was prescribed soma about 10 years ago…took it for 5, weaned off for a few, and now have been on it for the past 4 years, taking 350 2X night, sometimes 3. As a recovering Alcoholic for 20 yrs., I see how I am getting addicted to the euphoria that comes with it once in awhile. I have had trouble weaning off, pain, and the mental challenge. I took 2 a night for a week, now 1 1/2 for a week, and so on… Here’s hoping in two weeks I will be off it, and need to find something else for the knee pain and neck pain.
