Subj: Personal responsibility
Date: 11/13/2010
After a horrible back injury I still decided to tough it out and not take any medications. I also decided to be stubborn and try to do things around the house. Since my back muscles couldn’t handle the strain it was up to other muscles to compensate. I pinched a nerve in my hip and strained some muscles in my leg, hip, and buttocks. I was in so much pain i could hardly think straight. My doctor gave me somas and vicodin. To be relieved of the pain when nothing else worked was wonderful. However i would caution people that if they have kids to take care of not to take these meds if there is no other adult to care for your kids. I only took mine when my husband was home. It all boils down to personal responsibility. Remember, integrity is doing what’s right even if no one is looking.

Subj: Memory problems

I have been taking Soma for 3 years now. It really helps with my muscal tention and prevents headaches and temporaly relieves pain caused by TMJ. The side effects I have found by my own experience with this medicine is it causes me to be forgetful alot. I am also currently being evaluated for kidney problems. I have had blood detected in my urine for the past couple of months with no signs of infection. I’m not sure if Soma is the cause of it or not. I have not found it to be addictive. I have been prescribed three 350mg pills a day. I can go without it at any time with no withdrawl symptoms.

I think alot of people who says its addictive is more mentally addicted or there are other medications involved. This is the only medicine I take. Please be careful if you are taking so many a day, it is easy to overdose on many medications. I think this is a great drug to an extent but agree that it should only be taken for a short period of time, but I can’t find another medicine to give me the relief of my symptoms as this one does.

Subj: Soma abuse
Date: 11/20/2010
For those out there that are taking 15 to 20 soma per day, that is an abuse amount. You may need a different type of meds. 1 tablet every 6 hours is about the most u want to take without fear of abuse.

Subj: Withdrawals?
Date: 11/30/2010
Is there withdrawals associated with Soma? I have been taking 1 and a half 350 mg soma at night before bed for severe back pain which helps, but after 2 months of it, I just decided to see if I could sleep ok without it, (I didn’t really) and today have been feeling chills, sickly, tired, diarrhea, I thought I was coming down with something, then realized that it could be withdrawals maybe? I just took half a pill a little bit ago and think I feel a bit better. I would take more cause I’m perscribed two a day but they just make me SO tired during the day. I am on hydrocodone during the day. Thanks!

Ingrid

AskDocWeb: There are no withdrawal symptoms listed for this drug. However, in post-marketing reports, cases of dependence, abuse, and withdrawal have been reported with prolonged use. It appears that some doctors assume that just because there are no withdrawal symptoms listed when used as directed (for a maximum of 3 weeks), that that there will not be any withdrawal symptoms at all. Sadly that does not seem to hold true.

Subj: Nausea and shaking
Date: 12/1/2010
Somas can be very useful as persribed. Taking to many, or mixing them with any other pain killers such as hydrocodone can have a very intense effect. I’ve found that taking somas by themselves definately relaxes me but also has negative side effects such as nausea and my hands start shaking uncontrollably.

Subj: Soma with Tylenol/Codeine?
Date: 12/1/2010
I have just received confirmation (Via MRI) that I have a herniated L-5 disc. I’ve been scheduled for an Epidural injection in a few weeks, but in the mean time, the Doctor prescribed Soma (350) and Tylenol w. Codeine #3. Is it safe to take both of these together? Particularly at bedtime to assist in what has been very difficult sleep since the injury. Thanks,

Izzy

AskDocWeb: There is a moderate concern about using codeine with Soma. The depressant effects of each of these drugs on breathing and the central nervous system may be additively or synergistically increased, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. According to drugs.com, when Soma is prescribed together with Tylenol/codeine, “patients should be monitored for potentially excessive or prolonged CNS and respiratory depression.”

Subj: Major problems forgetting everything
Date: 12/2/2010
Hi everyone. I was hit head on in a car accident and ended up having a cervical fusion (c5-6). I’m 33. I was on Soma (2-4 a day) for almost 7 months and norco for about 3. Even after I was off of the norco and only on Soma I had major problems forgetting everything. I felt like I was in a fog. I was not so tired, but I was unable to remember anything. I had to go cold turkey off of everything three months post op as I had lost too much weight from being sick. Then one month later I had a flare of up of severe pain and was placed back on Soma and was on it for four more months. The first time I cold turkey’d the medications I had severe headaches and nausea. I had been on norco for an ankle injury the year before my car accident for three months and had no problem with withdrawal symptoms. This time, it was severe but I was not sure if it was the norco, soma, or the combination of both.

When I got back on the soma I again had severe memory issues. I’m an attorney and had to write everything down. I’d remember talking to someone but could not remember the content of the conversation (which can be very bad in my line of work) so I kept a record of all conversations. I then reduced the soma slowly. And again had the same withdrawal symtoms – severe headaches for weeks and nausea. I’ve now been soma free for almost four week. My memory is coming back. It’s not totally back but I would say about 75%.

I am not sure how long this stays in your system, but I can tell you it is still affecting me. I stayed away from alcohol completely until I was down to 1 Soma a day. Then, I drank once and literally blacked out and (I’m told) went crazy talking gibberish and completely freaked out. I scared my husband half to death. He had no idea what was wrong with me. It was like my brain was asleep and my body awake. This had never ever happened to me before. I then researched it a bit and learned of the “soma coma” – apparently you can black out if you mix it with alcohol. I’m only 103 pounds so I’m guessing it affects me differently than most because of my size. After that experience I didn’t drink again on Soma.

I’ve been off of it completely now for almost four weeks and drank four days ago and again blacked out and went nuts. This is NOT normal. I only had 3 glasses of wine. This is some seriously strong stuff. I do not know why it is still affecting me but it is. I would caution anyone taking that drug to be careful. And to the person who’s husband is experienc ing dementia – I was very similar. I could not remember anything. I had a hard time recalling words. I knew it was the medication but the degree it affected me was daunting. Good luck to all of you. I will never get on that drug again…

Subj: Drugs that effect birth control?
Date: 12/8/2010
I take Soma and Percocet, does that effect my birth control or cancel it out?

Casey

AskDocWeb: Neither drug has any effect on the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, there are drugs that affect birth control effectiveness. Some epilepsy medications: including primidone, Valproate, phenobarbital, Felbatol and Keppra, some sleep medications: including Provigil and Nuvigil, and Rifadin, an antibiotic. Any of these can alter your birth control’s ability to prevent pregnancy. Medications taken orally to treat yeast infections can also reduce the effectiveness of birth control as can the supplement St. John’s Wort.

Subj: Burning sensations in chest
Date: 12/9/2010
When does this start working after i have a burning sensations in my chest i have been taking it for 2 days.

diana

AskDocWeb: Soma begins working in about 30 minutes and lasts for approximately 2-6 hours. A burning sensation in the chest may indicate several possible health problems, some of which requires medical attention so check with your doctor.

Subj: Any ideas anyone?
Date: 12/25/2010
My husband is an addict and has been addicted to Soma for about 2 years. About 10 years ago he got a legitimate rx for it, but now buys it through pharmacies over the internet from a doctor in Europe. He hides the pills and lies about it, can’t keep a job, has 3 DUI’s, and is in complete denial. He wets the bed, drools, can’t talk after taking the drug, gets shaky and can’t walk or hold things with his hands. He also just started smoking and using chew for no reason, buys nicorette gum so I don’t “see the evidence” and eats a bag or Oreo cookies every day (didn’t used to). I count the pills (from Mumbai) and he takes 10 – 13 a day. He’s also taking a drug called Movigil, and I don’t know why. Any ideas anyone?

Subj: Daily struggle
Date: 12/27/2010
I can only tolerate soma by taking one whole tablet and breaking it in half, then taking that half and breaking it into 2. I then have 4 small pieces. I take one of the fourths, and try and get my muscles spasms to calm down. I usually try deep breathing along with the forth, as well as lying on a heating pad.

Soma works the best for muscle spasms, but i must break it up like this bc other wise its too strong for my respiratory system. I tried to take an entire half before, and the pain relief was a miracle. but i had to lay in bed for a few hours it was so sedating. but it stopped the pain and stopped the spasms. when im wracked with pain, its best for me to only take a forth, wait for about an hour, and take another forth. this is so that im not knoocked out and can work or carry out house work/errands. any more than this and i start weezing and gasping for air. i have asthma and chronic bronchitis, and i cannot take any more than this, plus i can only take it sparingly, which means on a as needed basis. perhaps my chronic lung condition is a blessing in a way, as i could never take multiple tablets or grow addicted.

After years of chronic pain, it makes sense to mix it up like this, combining hot showers, baths, moist heat, massage, deep breathing, biofeedback, with otc ibuprofen or tylenol and small amounts of soma–to make life not only livable, but to prolong it. i see no reason to depend solely on soma, and i am frightened of taking out my liver and kidneys if i do. when i am weezing and gasping for air i have a powerful respect for my life and how fragile it is.
Knocking back 4-5 tablets just to get a high? OMG, these people have not yet learned what it is like to be fighting for your life…and losing kidney function is horrorfiing..google up some info on getting dialysis–it happens! And drinking and drugging has killed a lot of peoples livers off and not just anyone can get a transplant.
So, i am grateful for my lung disorder, in that it makes me appreciate and have total reverence for this body and its internal organs and their working together in harmony every day is truely a wonder. just trying to keep breathing is a daily struggle. so to me, being alive is a gift. treasure it. we are all so individual, arent we?
