Subj: Soma and Xanax?
Date: 12/27/2010
Is there an adverse effect taking 1/2 a pill of soma with 4 pills of xanax a day?
Carol
AskDocWeb: Yes, there is a possible drug interaction that may produce adverse effects. Taking Xanax (alprazolam) and Soma (carisoprodol) together may additively or synergistically increase the depressant effects on the central nervous system and/or breathing, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. This interaction could pose a danger for those involved in hazardous activities that require mental alertness.
Subj: Watery stool
Date: 1/3/2011
I have just started Soma. I have had very bad reactions to Flexeril in the past so my doctor wanted to try me on this. I have severe leg, ankle, and foot cramps mostly at night and it wakes me out of sound sleep. Sometimes these cramps will linger and just keep intensifying. i usually have to get up and use hot packs to relieve the pain. i only take 350 ml. 1Xday at bedtime. It has been helping me sleep but I have Crohn’s disease and I’ve noticed it has made my stool very watery. Will this resolve after a while?
Michele
AskDocWeb: That is unlikely. One of the most common symptoms of Crohn’s disease is chronic loose stools. That is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Soma.
Subj: Feel like I am going to crawl out of my skin
Date: 1/4/2011
I was in an accident 6 months ago and was on Percocet & Flexeril fir 4 months. Then I had shoulder surgery & was on hydrocodone 7.5 for 7 weeks with Flexeril for at night. My muscle spasms were BAD at night, and my doc. moved me to Somas instead because of how tight my bicep was. Also had requested to go down a level in hydrocodone at same time. The day after I started Somas, I had diarrhea, severe stomach pains, no longer interested in food, feel like I am going to crawl out of my skin for several hours after taking Somas, and can NOT fall asleep for several hours after taking it. (thought it was supposed to knock me out) It does help with the muscle spasm pain though. When I wake up, it is usually after about 5-5 & 1/2 hrs. After raking the Somas and my mind is COMPLETELY & instantly awake, no matter what… Are these Soma side effects or issues with dropping hydrocodone dosage??? I want to sleep and can’t!!! If I could, I’d zip out of my skin for a few hours to get rid of this feeling!! And sleep….
Kenzie
AskDocWeb: Remember that this medication is to be taken with a full glass of water and if it upsets your stomach, it may be take with food. Insomnia is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Fluid retention?
Date: 1/24/2011
Will soma cause fluid retention?? I have been on different types of prescriptions since they took darvon off the shelf, it seems I get fluid build up, I don’t know if it was from soma? I was on tramadol, had reaction, went to soma, thought I had a reaction, went to the ER, fluid retention, tylenol 3- fluid retention, I need an answer quick, I am going to the doctor tomorrow, my feet have went from a 8.5 to a size 10, I know codeine causes fluid retention. Can someone pleast tell me something quickly. I am in pain.
Janet
AskDocWeb: Swelling due to fluid retention is listed as a severe allergic reaction to Soma. This requires immediate medical attention. This is not something to wait for a next day treatment.
Other possible symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, red welts on the skin, skin rash, asthmatic attacks, dizziness, fever, low blood pressure, shock, stinging of the eyes, and weakness. If any of these occur, seek immediate medical attention.
Subj: The best thing in the world
Date: 1/25/2011
I have taken soma for 10 years I have a number of problems lower back is all busted up have nerve pain down my legs from lower back neck is busted up two discs between my shoulders rotator cuff torn right shoulder labium torn in 3 spots and bone spurs on the same shoulder. I take loratab 10/500 and soma 350mg and this is the only way I can walk when in pain. Now I will say this it’s not for people the are prone to drug abuse because it gives you a good high but that’s not what I use them for. I have so much pain that’s the ONLY thing that stops it and as side effects well everyone is different but I have not had any well other than the itch here and there nothing bad. I think it’s in my case the best thing in the world BUT like I said if someone is prone to drug abuse DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM AS IT GIVES YOU A HIGH OR FEELING OF WELL BEING!!! But if you are a hurting person like I am it’s the best thing ever but I am no Dr and for some reason a lot of Drs will not give it. I hope this helps as I have been on the loratab and soma for 10 plus years and no problems. JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR LIVER CHECKED EVERY YEAR TO MAKE SURE NO DAMAGE IS HAPPENING BUT I HAVE ALWAYS CAME BACK WITH A CLEAN AND WELL WORKING LIVER BIT IM 30 so to each there own. HOPE IT HELPS BE GOOD PEOPLE AND LOVE LIFE EVEN IF IT HURTS 75% of the time.

Subj: Concerned for my best friend
Date: 2/1/2011
Soma; I have used it before my hysterectomy for severe cramping due to many cysts erupting in my ovaries and tubes. I didn’t like the way it made me feel out of it and drowsy; not with it, but the pain was severe. I also experienced kind of out of body experience the mornings after heavy usage; (2 to 4 at the most – when I was having a ovarian cyst pop; plus all the pain gave me panic attacks which I have had all my life) I did not abuse the drug. I only had prescription for 30 or 60 (can’t remember). That was over 6 years ago.
I am concerned for my best friend, she uses perhaps 3 times the amount she is diagnosed through other ways; and is starting to experience black outs. We both have neck problems, mine herniated due to an Ex beating me; hers do to a car accident & she uses them to alleviate the extreme nerve damage that she has (with ambien, high dose anti-depressants & 50 mgph fentynal patch. I am really worried that she is going to go into a black out while driving, as did another friend of ours who also took soma’s to the extreme. To me, they are much more dangerous than your simple Valium (mothers little helper); been around for years and centuries – made by the root of Valerian plant (although in that pure form it will also act as if you had an enima) or Xanax for panic; is there some advice you can give me that I can pass on to her before she hurts/kills herself or anyone else?
Annnnonymousity
AskDocWeb: You might tell her that you found out about a drug interaction between Ambien and Soma. Using these two drugs together compound the depressant effects on the central nervous system, which may slow reaction time, as well as slow the breathing, which may reduce alertness due to oxygen deprivation. These two effects could make hazardous activities such as driving very dangerous, both for herself and for others on the road.
Subj: Is this withdrawal?
Date: 2/5/2011
I’ve been on Soma & Darvocet for ~20 yrs. treating herniated disks & arthritis in my back. When darvocet was taken off the market in Dec ’10 my Dr rx’d Talwin as replacement. Never told me to wean off the Darv just start Talwin in its place. I didnt tolerate the Talw so wont take it again. In the meantime I had taken an Advil or 2 with Soma in leiu of no Darvocet. I rarely ever took more than 6 Soma or Darv in a 24 hr period, usually less. For 2 wks now I cut back on the soma as I started feeling really bad, my blood pressure went through the roof (168/120) & my blood pressure meds have been rx’d x 5 which make me useless.
My Dr ordered a renal sonogram for this coming Mon. I have never experienced drug withdrawal. I’ve always been athletic & healthy. The sx’s & way I’ve felt since stopping both Soma & Darvocet have scared me into thinking I must have a terminal illness. I’ve been on the couch a week, can barely take a shower & make it to the couch without being dizzy & faint. I have no energy, no stamina & can’t list all the sx’s I have. Is this withdrawal???? Am I ever going to feel right again? I wish my Dr had educated me on stopping both these drugs.
Tess
AskDocWeb: Withdrawal symptoms have not been reported from short-term use of Soma, only from those who use it long-term. Darvocet was withdrawn from the U.S. market in November of 2010 because it was linked to potentially deadly heart rhythms. People who stopped using Darvocet suddenly have reported withdrawal symptoms of nausea, diarrhea, anxiety, and shivering. The FDA recommends that people on Darvocet should stop taking it and ask their healthcare provider for a more suitable pain medication.
Subj: Answer for “It’s not Right”
Date: 2/8/2011
Addressed to “It’s not Right” . You can hire an attorney & sue due to 1) This doctor is taking you for your money 2) They are putting your life at stake due to overdose of soma. Soma relaxes the heart & can cause tons of health problems from lack of blood flow. Find an attorney & sue for neglect & find a new internal medicine doctor. May God be with you. The information I have provide can be obtained by the internet & your pharmacist.

Subj: Knee pain
Date: 2/10/2011
I take Soma as needed for back pain I suffered six years ago in a car accident. Two years ago I had my knee scoped to remove a ‘loose body’ or chip of bone. I recently started taking Soma more regularly now, and I have found my knee is aching more now. At first though I thought of the weather change and being so cold was making my knee ache, but now I wonder if it is the Soma relaxing my knee and causing it to ache. Any advice?
Jeff
AskDocWeb: Muscle pain and joint pain are listed as possible side effects of Soma that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Soma and pregnancy
Date: 2/15/2011
I have been on Soma and lortab for a few years due to c-spine surgery and arthroscopic shoulder surgery. My pain is actually worse now then before the surgeries and I have now also been diagnosed with bursitis; that’s why there is a continuous of taking the medications. Well, I just found out that I am pregnant and am concerned that my taking the medications for this length of time, may harm the baby. In addition, I tried to quit cold turkey on taking them and haven’t slept in 3 days and am in such excruciating pain, that unfortunately, there is a side of me that is unsure if I will be able to handle my chronic pain through a full pregnancy.
My husband and I were thrilled when we found out that I was pregnant but have many concerns between the health of the baby and myself. I have been doing research online and have found hundreds of forums/blogs about both medications that I take but of course, there are mixed comments about the safety of my issues on all forums. Since the medications have been in my system, would it be safe to take even 1 pill/per day to assist with any type of chronic pain that I am in? Whether it be one pill or the other? Thank you.
Shan
AskDocWeb: The effects of Soma during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. In general it is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of the risk to the fetus. The FDA puts Soma in pregnancy category C, which is given to drugs that have not been studied in pregnant women but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Consult with your doctor for appropriate alternatives. Note that this medication passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Read more feedback about Soma.
