Subj: Addictive?

Is Soma addictive?
Jeff
AskDocWeb: In clinical use, psychological dependence has been rare, and there have been no reports of significant withdrawal symptoms. Nevertheless, this drug should be used with caution in addiction-prone individuals.
Subj: Mother
Date: 2/18/2006
My mother fell off of a ladder at place of employment in the 80’s and was prescribed soma and Tylenol #3 with three DR’s taking a deaf ear to our family concerns and pleads mother is deeply miss. My father found her April of 2005 in bed. Medication was found pinned to top of her box springs in a plastic bag. She had a total between the two meds of 1080 pills from 1/14/05 to 3/12/05. Dear mother, I know you could control your addiction however the doctors could of control there script pads over the past twenty five years and help here with addiction that they created. Please STOP, there are other means of treatment, DONT PUT YOUR LOVE ONES THREW THIS because it effects them more then you could every IMAGINE.

My mother used soma and Tylenol with codeine or soma and darvocet, I’ve heard that this combination should not be prescribed together, can cause heart arrhythmia’s is this true? She used this combination and built up a tolerance over 20 years. The physicians continued to prescribe, eventually my mother overdosed, she was found in bed the next morning, it has been a terrible ordeal for my family. As teenage child to now 36 I watched my mother struggle to stay of these addictive medications and begged her physician to stop prescribing, we lost our battle April 2005 and my 4 year old daughter lost her very loving grandmother.

Subj: Soma side effects
Date: 3/2/2006
I have been using Soma for two and a half years, I have had most of the side affect listed… for a couple months I had been having seizures and I noticed it was when I got up quickly and I would black out and vomit, great loss of eye sight, depression for no reason withdrawal symptoms like insomnia and I would often faint. Then when would run out I would be very tired all of the time and be in excruciating pain. I would not recommend this drug to people under the age of 28 to 30. I am 20 years old and it has done horrible thing to me. I have lost alot of my mobility skills and don’t know if these symptoms will ever go away now that I am no longer using this medication, although it does work really well I would not recommend this medication for long periods of usage no more than a couple weeks! Thanks,
Kristy
AskDocWeb: We are sorry to hear that you are having these terrible symptoms. Please go and get examined by a neurologist as soon as possible. Seizures, blacking out, and loss of eyesight is nothing to procrastinate with. Go with a friend who can share this experience with you.

Subj: Overdose death
Date: 3/21/2006
My 31 year old son died 3 weeks ago of a soma/lorcet overdose. I had warned him repeatedly about what a muscle relaxer does. YOUR HEART IS A MUSCLE!!! He obtained these from “pain clinics” in Houston that prescribed 120 Lorcet, 120 Somas, and 120 2 mg bars of xanax every visit! Young people are becoming addicted every day and these doctors don’t care. There have been many, many deaths due to overdoses and these drugs should be written in triplicate because of their addictive properties. There should also be a way to link pharmacies so that people can’t get numerous prescriptions a week. This is legalized drug pushing and if you have legitimate pain, go to a legitimate doctor!!! Please spread the word so no other mother has to lose her child!!!
Anita
AskDocWeb: We are sorry to hear about your loss. It would be great to have a central registry to prevent duplicate prescriptions.
Subj: 10 years on Soma/Carisoprodol
Date: 3/28/2006
Soma/Carisoprodol has been a Godsend for me. I have been on it for 10 years and have NEVER abused it. I Was kicked under my chin by a running 200 lb man 25 years ago and needless to say my neck is a complete disaster. I’ve seen two Neurosurgeons that say my condition is beyond surgery. I’ve done physical therapy, tens unit’s, ice packs, heat packs, isometrics, etc. and they all help minimally. The only thing that seems to help me from going crazy from muscle spasms in my neck, shoulders and arms is Soma. I’ve never had any adverse reaction and would recommend that they be used cautiously if you are not prone to drug abuse.

Subj: Becoming addicted to Soma
Date: 4/1/2006
I have been taking Soma for 2 years now and have become more and more addicted to it. I have gone from 3 tables per day to 15-20. I have an addictive background and find it hard to just stop cold turkey. Any suggestions on how to wean myself off of these little monsters?
John
AskDocWeb: Stopping cold turkey is not recommended. People have reported success with weaning by cutting down the number of pills per day gradually over time, but because you are taking so many, you may need professional help. Your doctor may be helpful with this problem if you are honest and open with him.
Subj: Soma really helps
Date: 4/12/2006
I was involved in a bad car accident and subsequently had three crushed thoracic vertebrae, broken ribs and a broken scapula. I have harrington (metal) rods on either side of my spine from the base of my neck to just above the waistline. I am a very lucky person, but unfortunately have to live with alot of pain as well as muscle spasms from the injuries and surgeries (now mostly lower back pain). I have been taking Soma as well as various types of (mild)painkillers for approximately 10 years now. I am quite active, a hands on person and an equestrian rider. I have been in tears literally many times due to the pain, but thankfully the Soma has helped me get through the muscle spasms and tenseness. It has really helped me stay the person that I was athletically. The hardest thing for me physically is to sit for a period of time and I would not be able to do it without the Soma.
I have found that along with a heating pad is most helpful for muscle spasms. The other medications (darvocet and vicodin) seem to have a more negative effect on me in that my stomach has become very sensitive and I can’t tolerate taking it very often. The Soma doesn’t seem to bother it. I don’t feel an addiction to it at all and let the pain dictate when I need to take it. Mentally it doesn’t affect my daily abilities.

My best friend overdosed on Soma last week and passed away. She was dead four days before she was found. What a tragic loss of life of such a beautiful person. Two years ago, I informed her doctor, psychologist, and pharmacy that she was abusing Soma and was suicidal. They didn’t listen and kept prescribing it for her. Now, she is gone… her grandchildren will never know her. Her friends will never know why. And I will be living with guilt for the rest of my life because I let her down.

Subj: Excessive cocktail
Date: 5/7/2006
My wife has spondyliolisthesis. She has been prescribed 350 mg Soma 4xday, 10/500 Lortab 4xday, 50mg Elavil 1xday, Neurontin 4xday, AND 10mg Methadone 1xday. This seems like an excessive cocktail. I am afraid she is becoming addicted to the lot – esp the Soma/Lortab combo. She denies it and cries that I don’t understand the extent of her pain. However she consistently runs out of meds indicating overdose. At night she will enter a catatonic state after taking Soma/Lortab/Methadone and pass out, although she says she is just tired. Do I need to confront the MD?
Anon
AskDocWeb: It sounds like your wife should see a pain specialist. It would help if you take along all the meds she is taking and a writen record of how many she is taking on a daily basis. And go with her so there isn’t a chance for any denial. She will be better off in the long run.

I have been taking soma for about 10 years. I take it only when needed, for muscle spasms (in my neck & upper back) and migraines. I have not experienced any side effects nor do I feel addicted, considering that I can go days or weeks without taking it. But my RX is for one pill at a time and no more then two in any given 24 hours.

Subj: Soma warning
Date: 5/16/2006
I have taken Soma (carisoprodol) for about 10 years, on average about 20 to 25 pills per day. For the people out there that think this is not an addictive drug, please be warned, not only addictive. Soma’s killed my mother back in 1998. She too, had a high tolerance and could easily down 30 to 40 tabs per day. She gave me my first ones. Now 10 years later, several grandchildren of my own and caring for my 84 year old father with Alzheimer’s. Not to mention we have four generations living on the property in trailors after Hurricane Katrina brought in 5 1/2 ft of storm surge destroying our homes, and the fact that knowing my own biological mother died from an overdose of Soma. I can’t shake the addiction. Please, I beg all of you, do what you can to get away from them. Psychological at first, but within a short period of time, the addiction becomes physical…and they WILL KILL YOU.

Subj: 15 Soma a day
Date: 5/21/2006
I have a friend I am very concerned about. My friend takes 15 somas a day and has tremors, loss of muscle movement. What is the long term effect and can there be any neurological damage that can be permanent?
Sarta
AskDocWeb: It sounds like your friend is addicted to Soma. It is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys so those are the two organs to watch for long term damage. Unless your friend is in serious pain, the doctor who prescribes the Soma should be notified immediately.
Subj: Why?
Date: 5/21/2006
I took 6 at once than 1 every ten minutes until I got to 15 I never slurred never felt drunk no side effects what so ever my friend took 4 and was all torn up. why
Tyson
AskDocWeb: Not everyone response to drugs the same way. Your bodies are different and one can tolerate more than the other.
Subj: Anyone else?
Date: 6/2/2006
I have used soma for almost a year for muscle spasms I’ve had due to a car accident years ago. I had tried almost everything, but soma did the trick. I must say that after almost a year I have gained 10 pounds, without any increase in eating. In fact, I’ve found I eat less than most people. I am now trying to do without the soma. Don’t really know what’s worse, the muscle spasms or the weight gain. It does SLOW your metabolism, I feel sure. Anyone else have the weight gain problem?
