About Sweating

Sweating is your body’s way of controlling temperature. For the most part it is controlled by the nervous system but the glands on your soles and palms also respond to emotional conditions.

Common Causes of Sweating

There are other causes of sweating besides hot weather and physical exercise. The most common are:

  • Fever
  • Synthetic materials that don’t breathe
  • Obesity
  • Not being in good physical condition
  • Emotional distress
  • Hormonal changes (hot flashes)
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs

Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) can occur even when you don’t have a temperature and have not engaged in physical activity. The medical term for profuse sweating is Diaphoresis. Here is a list of drugs that can cause profuse sweating. The drugs listed in bold indicate those drugs that can cause profuse sweating in 3% or greater of users.

Danger Signs

Some times excessive sweating is an indication of a serious problem. If you have a persistant cough, weight loss, and you sweat excessively it can indicate tuberculosis or Hodgkin’s disease. Consult with your doctor immediately.

If your excessive sweating is accompanied by weight loss, buldging eyes, rapid heartbeat and an increased appetite it may indicate a thyroid disorder.
