Subj: Tenuate for ADD
Date: 11/8/2009
Was prescribed Tenuate for ADD, not for weight loss does this make since?

David

AskDocWeb: Yes, Tenuate produces an amphetamine-like stimulation and we’ve read where some Dr.’s are now prescribing it off-label to relieve the symptoms of both ADD and ADHD. Chemically it is very close to Wellbutrin.

Subj: Speed feeling
Date: 11/9/2009
I just was given Tenuate from my doctor, I am nervous about the “speed” feeling that I have gotten in the past like when I took Adipex. Can anyone comment on this? I don’t want to stay up or days or feel like my hair is growing!

Paige

Subj: Lost 80 lbs with Tenuate
Date: 11/17/2009
I’ve taken tenuate before. I actually was 240lbs when I started taking it. I took it for about a year and I lost 80lbs with it. It did make me very speedy, but that didn’t bother me. I did lose some hair, but not really bad. Over all I think its a good weight loss pill.

Subj: Multivitamin?
Date: 11/20/2009
I am 27 years old and 182 cm is my tall and 95kg is my weight. I want to lose weight around 10 Kg. How long I have to take this pills? Is it necessary to use multivitamin with them or not?

Hassan

AskDocWeb: Although the use of a multivitamin is not mentioned in the patient information for Tenuate, it may still be a good idea to ask your doctor if you need one. If everything goes well you should be able to lose 10 Kg in 3 or 4 weeks.

Subj: Concerned about gaining weight after stopping
Date: 12/7/2009
I want to start using Tenuate but I am a bit concern about the weight I might gain after stop using it. Is there any report about gaining weight after stop using the pill?

Sanaz

AskDocWeb: There is no report about gaining weight after discontinuing however, you can increase the chances of keeping it off if you make the changes in diet and lifestyle to those that support your health.

Subj: Get up and move
Date: 12/28/2009
I used tenuate 21 years ago for 90 days. At 800 calories a day. And I walked everyday to get my heart rate up to burn calories. What I am saying is you have to get up and move. If you want to be successful. I returned for my first weight check 14 days after starting and was in tears after finding out I lost 22 pds! My total after 90 days was 54 pds. My doctor asked if I thought I needed another month of medicine and I declined. You have to change your relationship with food. The way I describe it is this…I use to live to eat now I eat to live. I lost 14 more pds after the medication and kept it off for over 7 years. Kids and several back surgeries later I am 40 pds heavier but am happier and I maintain this weight with no problem. Through out all of it I never really changed what I ate just how much. Oh, except for soda-I went from 4 a day to unsweetened instant tea. 0 calories! That was the hardest part for me but worth it!! So I say, GO FOR IT!

Subj: Hair is thinning
Date: 1/19/2010
I have been taking Tenuate for 4 months now and I have started to loose my hair in the front (thinning), could this be due to the medication?

Carolyn

AskDocWeb: Yes, hair loss is listed as one of the possible side effects of using Tenuate.

Subj: UA drug test
Date: 2/3/2010
Can Tenuate cause a false possitive for amphetamines in a ua drug test?

Heather

AskDocWeb: Tenuate is chemically similar to amphetamines so it may to show up on a cheap urine drug test. However, it doesn’t show up on the standard 5 or 10 panel urine drug tests. Always tell the people doing the test what prescription drugs you are taking and be prepared to request a GC/MS confirmation test if the results show positive.

Subj: Tenuate insomnia
Date: 2/16/2010
Im new to Tenuate. My Dr. prescribed 25mg twice a day (at 9am and 3pm) for 1st week…however, on my first day/night, it took me hours to fall asleep. The next day, I took only 1 pill at noon and still took me hours to fall asleep. I would yawn, but toss/turn all night long. I stopped taking it until I can find a way to fight the insomnia side effect. Any suggestions?

Angela

AskDocWeb: Please talk to your doctor about any unacceptable side effects. Your doctor needs to monitor your progress and sometimes adjust your medication.

Subj: Tenuate formula?
Date: 2/21/2010
I used Tenuate Dospan many years ago, and found them an excellent weight loss aid. However I took a course more recently and felt sure that the formula had changed. It’s hard to describe how exactly, but there was less of a positive, “up” feeling when using the pills and more of a nervy, jitteriness. I had heard that Tenuate was no longer available in the UK so I was surprised to be able to get them prescribed at all. Is it a new/different formulation they’re simply marketing as Tenuate?

Michelle

AskDocWeb: It is doubtful that the formula is the same as the original Tenuate (also branded as Apisate), which was banned by the European Medicine Approval Agency in 1999 because of safety concerns.

Subj: Drug test?
Date: 3/9/2010
im taking 25mg o tenuate and i got a b12 shot will this make me fail a drug test?

Lizzie
AskDocWeb: Although Tenuate is chemically similar to amphetamines it usually does not show up on a urine drug test. However, be sure to tell the people doing the testing about any prescription drug you are taking. The only B vitamin to cause any problems with drug testing is B2, not B12 so you are okay there.

Subj: No side effects
Date: 4/7/2010
I have been taking 75mg Tenuate for 4 weeks and have lost 9lbs. I am following a 1200-1300 calorie diet. I am happy with the slow and steady weight loss because I exercise and feel very healthy. I have 20 more pounds to lose and am wondering how much longer it will be safe for me to continue this drug without dependence? I have had virtually no side effects.

McGarry

AskDocWeb: Like most diet drugs, Tenuate is usually not prescribed for more than three months.

Subj: Dizziness
Date: 5/19/2010
I started tenuate 2 days ago ..I’m feeling very dizzy, I take seroquel at night for sleep, can these 2 medications have a bad connection? or is this dizziness normal?

AskDocWeb: Dizziness is listed a one of the possible side effects of Tenuate but if it interferes in any way with your normal routine then check with your doctor. At this time there have been no drug interactions reported between Tenuate and Seroquel.

Subj: Prolong use of Tenuate
Date: 6/26/2010
I am 38 years old and have been taking tenuate for over 2 years now-however, I cut the tablet in half and only take half each morning. When I took the whole pill, I had trouble sleeping. I have lost a total of 30 pounds and I continue to take them because I feel fine and the weight has stayed off. My doctor sees me on a regular basis to check my BP but has not suggested I stop taking this pill. Can I have any kind of damage from prolong use?

Angela

AskDocWeb: Prolonged use of Tenuate may induce dependence with withdrawal syndrome on cessation of therapy. Hallucinations have occurred rarely following high doses of the drug. Several cases of toxic psychosis have been reported following the excessive use of the drug and some have been reported in which the recommended dose appears not to have been exceeded. The psychosis abated after the drug was discontinued.

Subj: Alcohol and Tenuate
Date: 7/1/2010
Can You drink or smoke while taking tenuate 75mg?

AskDocWeb: Drinking alcohol while taking Tenuate can increase the unwanted side effects. And of course most people agree that smoking is bad for you.

Subj: Is that true?
Date: 7/2/2010
I use to take tenuate about 8 years ago, I’d love to get back on it now that I’m older and wiser and know what I need to do to keep it off, but I was told it was no longer perscribed in the US..is that true?

Lisa

It is currently controlled in Schedule IV under the U.S. Controlled Substances Act (CSA) as a stimulant. It is sold under the trade names Tenuate and Tenuate Dospan.
