Alcohol with Tenuate?
Date: 6/8/2012
I have been taking tenuate for about 3 weeks now and have lost about 16lbs! So it is working! My question is the med write ups say do not drink alcohol but gives no reasons that I can find. Do they have a severe reaction to each other? I’m only wondering because I’m going to some familys house next weekend and would like to have a glass or two of wine? Would I be okM
Sara
AskDocWeb: Drinking alcohol while on Tenuate can enhance the risk of unwanted side effects, especially dizziness. This drug interaction decreases oxygen to the middle muscular layer of the heart wall, which increases the strain on the heart and may lead to more adverse cardiovascular effects.
Tenuate also reduces the subjective awareness of the state of intoxication. In other words, it decreases the physical sensations that would normally stop you from drinking too much. Drinking alcohol while taking Tenuate is generally not recommended.
I see the difference in inches
Date: 6/20/2012
I have been taking the generic tenuate dospan for a month now. I have altered my eating habits, and increased my water intake. I also go to the gym a few days a week. However, I have not had the weight loss results I had hoped. I’m on my second refill now and hope this will change. I have been doing everything right..and ready that if I didn’t lose 4lbs in the first week to consult my doctor. I have only lost 2lbs in the last month. I see the difference in inces but not substantial enough. Can you tell me what could be causing this issue? I’ve had my thyroid checked before. I do not take any other medications, herbal supplements, etc. I am 5’1″ and weighed 150..I’m only down to 148. HELP!!
Everything Right
AskDocWeb: If you just started going to the gym at the same time as starting the medication then consider this. Muscle mass is denser and heavier than fat. If your workouts are developing your muscles then you may be losing fat that doesn’t show up on the scale because it is being replaced by heavier muscle mass. Your weight may not go down as much but your overall health may be increasing considerably. That kind of progress is likely to show up in other places than just a tape measure. You may find you have a more positive attitude, feel more energetic, capable, and better able to cope with problems.

AskDocWeb: Some medications take a few days to build up in your system but this is not one of them. It should have starting working the first day so you may want to consult with your doctor.
Unpleasant under-arm sweat smell
7/17/2012
Hi, I have been taking Tenuate for 4 weeks. Apart from losing weight which I am enjoying, I have notice a change in the smell of under-arm sweat. The smell is very strong and unpleasant. Can you please advise? thanks
Soraya
AskDocWeb: The distinctive smell of sweat results from the metabolizing of bacteria on the skin of different areas of the body. The bacterium breaks down the sweat into acids that cause the smell. An increase in the amount of sweat can increase the strength of the odor because the bacteria thrive on the increased food supply – yes, they eat sweat. This should give you a hint as to what you can do about it in addition to just applying deodorant or perfume. Washing more frequently reduces the amount of odor producing bacteria on the skin. Antiperspirant that contain aluminum-based compounds temporarily block the sweat pore, thereby reducing the amount of perspiration that reaches your skin.
Liver enzymes
9/9/2012
Hi I’ve been taking Tenuate (75mg) for a couple of months now. I haven’t had a drop of alcohol or any other over the counter drugs while I’ve been on it. It seems to be helping. However, since I started taking this, my liver enzymes have really gotten out of wack. Has anyone seen reactions like this?
Cathy
AskDocWeb: It has been awhile but yes, see Teresa’s post about elevated ALT GGT.
Tenuate Retard Artegodan 75
9/24/2012
I visit my parenths back home and one of my cousins suggested Tenuate Retard Artegodan 75 to me, she already lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks, i bought 20 of them and back home to Canada, i took it to pharmacy and she told me they dont manufacture this drug anymore for years and it is not healthy, my doctor also dont know this drug, is this true, that they stopped manufacturing this pills? is it safe to use this drug? it has a blue package.
Somy
AskDocWeb: We’ve read that Hoechst Marion Roussel (Switzerland) discontinued manufacturing Tenuate Retard but as far as we know Artegodan is still making them. Since this is a prescription drug that requires your doctor’s approval and your doctor is not familiar with it, it is NOT safe to use for a number of reasons. If you are obese (BMI 30 or more, you need to work with your doctor so that your health can be monitored while under treatment. If your doctor is not familiar with the drug then there is no way to evaluate what effect it may have on you.

Thanks for your advise my BMI is 21.3 and i only need to lose 8 pounds, i will talk with another doctor. my height is 5’3″ and i am 120 pound. i am 31 years old.
Somy
AskDocWeb: You are welcome Somy. Since you have only a few pounds to lose, have you considered starting a new physical activity? Taking up a physical hobby that you could do three times a week is a great way to lose weight, especially if it something you would enjoy doing with a friend or group.

AskDocWeb: In order to determine that a physician has to examine both you and your medical history. The question of safety is not as simple as a yes or no answer. All prescription medications come with the risks of side effects and bad reactions. That is why they are limited to prescriptions written by your doctor.
