I did use Tenuate Retard for 3 months and have lost 7kg, then I did stopped loosing weight. Now I just take them on weekends when there are too much temptations and I have started loosing weight and I am not hungry during the week and am feeling great.

Subj: Phentermine and Tenuate

I have taken phentermine and tenuate. Tenuate seems stronger to me. I take it every other day because it causes severe insomnia in me and I have to sleep sometime. I also get stomach cramps but it does work in making me have NO appetite.

Subj: Tenuate insomnia

I am having major problems getting sleep. I started the pill on 02/08/07 and have not had a good sleep. They do work but cutting back to one or two a day would that help with me getting to sleep? Right now I take one at 7 and 11 and 5.

I’ve taken Tenuate on and off for several years. I cut the 75 mg pill in half and take it around 5:30am. It does work but I noticed a slight withdrawal symptom when I lost the weight and stopped taking it – only lasted a day or two – mostly low energy. I think it’s a good drug when used properly.

I have been on Tenuate CR 75mg for 3 weeks now and have only lost 2lbs. I never ate much in the first place and it really has not changed anything. I regularly work out so is there something else I can do? I’m very discouraged.

AskDocWeb: Because muscle weighs more than fat and you are working out regularly, you may be making more progress than your scale indicates. Three weeks isn’t very long, keep it up for a few months.

Tenuate is a tertiary amine… 3 times removed from the amphetamine chain. One of the side effects is its also a mood elevator, and that can possibly cause some psycho addictiveness. It can be addictive, if one makes an effort, i.e. abuse of the medication. as an adjunct to proper diet and exercise, it can help to wean one off of over eating. Tenuate does not come in a patch. It does not have the nervousness side effects as some other diet medications. As with most medications, it is not recommended within the first trimester of pregnancy. That type of weight gain will take of itself in a few months. A simple formula to follow for weight loss is, “calories in, calories out” exercise is the calorie out part. If you’re taking tenuate, you apparently have the calorie in part down pat. Talking to a dietician is very valuable, listening is even more, reading about diet and exercise is also important. Changing eating habits is generally the key to long term weight loss. – Just thought I would add this. Good luck.

Hi, I am from Germany and my doctor gave me also Tenuate. It worked great for me, I lost over 60 lbs. But I know you have to be careful cause it’s really not for everybody. Some people in Germany got sick from those pills, so I recommend to go see a doctor every week.

Subj: Concerns about drug testing

I am on 75mg of Tenuate once a day. I am in the medical field and have concerns about if my job does random drug testing. Will this drug make me fail?

AskDocWeb: Tenuate typically doesn’t show up on the standard 5 or 10-panel urine drug tests. However, it is always a good idea to tell the people doing the test what prescription drugs you are taking.

Subj: I have been exhausted

I have been taking tenuate 25 mg for about 3 months. I also take medication for my back, long term pain medications-Valium, Oxycodone and Synthroid 75. I have been exhausted. Before while I was just taking the other medication I was fine, but now I am tired all the time. I can’t get up in the morning, nap in the afternoon and go to bed early at night. It is almost like I am lethargic. The Dr. knew I was on the other medications when this was prescribed, I had gained weight and we were trying to get my weight down to help take pressure off my back. Is this a normal symptom?

Subj: Permanent damage?

I used Tenuate about 10 years ago and lost 35 pounds with no side effects. However, I took it recently for two months and have experienced chest pain, racing heart, and anxiety. I have lost 25 lbs. in approx. 3 months, but have discontinued use. I am now approx. 5 lbs. from goal weight. Since I have no family history of heart disease and have never had these problems before, I was frightened by my heart side effects. I have seen a cardiologist and have had a stress test, echocardiogram, EKG, etc. Thank goodness all tests are ok, but I will not use Tenuate again.

I have always been in excellent health and work out 5 days/week. I am an active person and was surprised that the drug would effect me in this way, especially since I used it years ago successfully. I wanted to lose weight, but not at the expense of my health. My chest pains were significant enough that I thought I was having a heart attack and went to the ER. Be very careful and alert when using this drug. I have been off the drug for approx. 1 month and am still have mild chest discomfort. How long does it take for the side effects to stop and does the drug cause permanent damage?

AskDocWeb: They should slowly disappear completely, though it’s not possible to tell exactly when. There should be no permanent damage.

Subj: Tenuate and period

I have been taking tenuate for about three weeks. It seems to have no real effect on me as far as appetite, etc. go. I am however over a week late with my period. I have taken a pregnancy test and at this time it says negative. Could the medication effect my period in this short of a time?

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t seem likely but it is possible. We suggest doing another pregnancy test one week after the first one.

Tenuate has been good for me (75mg) both in effectiveness and for lack of disruption to my life. However, I do get the dry mouth (as listed in the symptoms). This isn’t a problem as I just keep a water bottle at my desk. I have not had any other side affects but am not really to worried about most them (they sound temporary). However, I am extremely concerned about the prospect of “breast development” and “hair loss” as I can’t see those going away on their own (hair loss means just the head? or all over?). What are the chances of this happening? Do you know how gradually this occurs? I.e. Would I notice it starting and be able to just stop treatment or would just wake-up one morning with a D-cup? Note: I brought this up with my doctor. He said exactly what you’d expect “The risks are extremely slim and depends on dosage/duration of treatment.” But I’d kind of like a hard number? Does the pharmaceutical company release these figures? Sorry, I’ve combined a bunch of questions into 1. I guess I will have to research some of this, but any insights you can provide or sources of info you can refer me to would be most appreciated.

AskDocWeb: I don’t have a hard number for you. The percentage is less than one percent so it probably won’t happen to you at all. The pharmaceutical companies do not release these numbers, sorry.

What is the difference between Tenuate Retard and Tenuate Dospan?

AskDocWeb: Tenuate Dospan is the brand name of the drug diethylpropion HCI made by Aventis. So what is tenuate dospan? It may be another brand name but we couldn’t find a manufacturer so it’s not clear if there is a difference between tenuate retard and tenuate Dospan or not.

Hi, I am 21 years old. Recently I had a tummy tuck. But I still having some fat in my body so I ask my surgeon to prescribe me something to loose weight he gave me this medicine. I have been taking it for 3 weeks but no results I haven’t noticed any changes. I exercise and also eating right, all I want to loose is 10 pounds. What should I do?

I have had incredible success with Tenuate and absolutely love it. I started using it about six months ago. I take 25 mg. 2x a day. The problem is that I am experiencing some troubling problems and I suspect they are because of the Tenuate. I have a dry and metallic taste in my mouth and I have started perspiring and cannot seem to control it. Is this because of the Tenuate? I am 46 years old and went through menopause early, five years ago. At first I thought this perspiration problem could be a change in my hormones but now I’m thinking it’s the Tenuate. I hate to go off of it because I’m so afraid I will gain the weight back.

AskDocWeb: The dry mouth is probably due to the Tenuate which means you need to drink a lot of water. There are many things that can cause you to perspire.
