Subj: How long on this pill?
Date: 1/26/2008
I’m starting on 75 mg on Monday. Little concerned about the side effects, so I thought I would start it when I am at work and a nurse is available! Tried all kinds of diets and hopefully this will be the trick. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. Can you tell me how long I can stay on this pill? Thanks!

Ju

AskDocWeb: Please remember not to drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine. Tenuate is for short-term use but your doctor will decide how long you can use it based on your weight loss progress.

Subj: Adverse side effects
Date: 1/28/2008
I took Tenuate generic 75 mg for one week and had adverse side effects. I had extreme drowsiness, blurred vision, panic, and “menstrual symptoms”. These are just menstrual type cramps even though you’re not menstruating. Constant PMS. I did not notice an effect on my appetite. I have been off the dose for 3 days but it has really, really messed with me – especially my eyesight. I took Phentermine 37.5mg for 12 weeks and lost 15 pounds but it stopped working. I knew well enough after taking Phentermine that Tenuate does NOT work for me. My BP has also gone up. Works for some, not for others.

How long does tenuate stay in your system?

Ashley

AskDocWeb: It varies for one person to the next but 14 days is the norm.

Subj: Wondering
Date: 2/4/2008
I’ve been taking tenuate for 2 days now, I was wondering should I ever feel hungry? Could this medicine not work for me?

Tara

AskDocWeb: Tenuate is designed to decrease your appetite but it will not eliminate it completely. You will still get hungry, just not as much. Tenuate does more than just reduce your appetite. It increases your metabolism by stimulating your central nervous system. Even so, it is possible that this medicine may not work for you.

Subj: Tenuate Dospan & Tenuate Retard
Date: 2/5/2008
Hi, What is the difference between Tenuate Dospan & Tenuate Retard? Thanks,

Marilyn

AskDocWeb: Tenuate Dospan is advertised as a sustained release and Tenuate Retard is suppose to be released over time. They appear to be the same drug with slightly different packaging.

Subj: Tenuate retard 75mg
Date: 2/8/2008
Hi, I just buy tenuate retard 75mg and eat it 3 times a day. I have insomnia and I think it’s ok but I want to know is it ok to take it 3 times a day and how long does it take to lost 6kg I already loose 1 kg in 2 days, thanks,

Sep

AskDocWeb: The directions say to take this medicine about 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals. And take your last dose of the day at least 4 to 6 hours before bedtime or there may be a problem sleeping.

Where can I buy Tenuate Dospan from? I have been looking for it on the Internet but I cannot find a website that sells it or that will send it to the United Kingdom. Please help.

Stephanie

AskDocWeb: As a general rule, if a drug is not available in your country then it is likely to be illegal to import it. You could call your local pharmacist and find find out.

Subj: Aromasin and Effexor XR
Date: 2/18/2008
Can I safely take tenuate if I am on Aromasin (an aromatse inhibitor for CA of the breast) and with Effexor XR. I have gained a great deal and I feel it is the aromasin and even could be the effexor. Any reason that I cannot try? Thank you,

Avis

AskDocWeb: Weight gain is not a listed side effect of Aromasin and 3% of patients loose weight while on Effexor. When you are under the care of a doctor you should let your doctor decide the best choice for weight loss.

Subj: Reached my goal weight
Date: 2/23/2008
I have been on Tenuate 25 mg for 5 months and have reached my goal weight. However, I noted headaches in the morning. Could my headaches by caused by the Tenuate? I plan to terminate my weight loss program and carry on the “lessons” on nutrition and exercise I learned. Is it okay to stop Tenuate abruptly? Thanks.

Gwen

AskDocWeb: Congratulations on reaching your goal weight, good job. It may not happen to you but some patients who stopped taking Tenuate abruptly after prolonged use have reported extreme fatigue, mental depression and sleep disturbances. If that does happen, it is not likely to last more than a few days.

Subj: GREAT product
Date: 2/27/2008
GREAT product. I have tried just about everything. I am taking Tenuate 25mg 3x’s a day @ 8am 12pm & 4pm. I have had NO problems whatsoever, other than dry mouth/extreme thirst at first, unlike with other rx meds I have taken. It really controls my hunger and cravings well. I have been taking it for 4 weeks and have lost 28 lbs.

Subj: I’ve got a SHUT-DOWN in my pants!
Date: 3/3/2008
It works well, I feel loosing weight, less appetite, less mid-day munching here and there after just 5 days of usage after 2 weeks on diet. Taking just 5 of 75 mg in 5 last days + walking about a quarter + weight loss lotion on my stomach I’ve lost 5 KG till now. But there is something wrong with it! I’ve got a SHUT-DOWN in my pants! No Erection, A little bit of Semen and No Attraction to SEX! What should I do? Is it common with this TENUATE? Or it’s because of something else like my diet or weight-loss lotion or else ?! Help, S.O.S…

Burice

AskDocWeb: Yes, changes in sex drive have been noted with Tenuate and should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Arnold-Chiari Malformation 1
Date: 3/6/2008
I have been taking Tenuate for a weight loss program and since I have been on it, I have hardly had any headaches and fatigue as I have Arnold Chiari Malformation1. Why would tenuate help with the headaches and would it be possible to stay on it forever? I have not felt this good in years!

Maureen

AskDocWeb: Tenuate is a drug for short term use and the affects of long-term use have not been studied. There is one drug interaction that you should be aware of between Tenuate (Diethylpropion) and Furoxone (Furazolidone), it can result in death.

Arnold-Chiari Malformation results when the opening at the base of the skull that the spinal cord passes through does not develop large enough. A bulging or herniation of the lower lobe of the brain and brain stem puts pressure in this area which can block the flow of spinal fluid. This may cause a range of symptoms including dizziness, muscle weakness, numbness, vision problems, headache, problems with balance and coordination, and can result in partial or complete paralysis below the spinal opening. Severity ranges from Type I to Type IV. Many people with Type I are asymptomatic and do not know they have the condition. Some patients go an entire lifetime without having noticeable symptoms.

Subj: Blue line around lip
Date: 3/21/2008
I have been taking it for two days now. So far it’s really working and my appetite is suppressed. This morning I woke up and I noticed a thin blue line going around my top lip. I don’t know if this is related to the medication or not…What could this be?

Maureen

AskDocWeb: See your physician, this should not be happening and may become worse.

Subj: I haven’t lost any weight
Date: 4/3/2008
I have been taking Tenuate 75 mg everyday for about a week now. The first two days I didn’t feel hungry at all and felt energized, but now I feel like it’s not doing anything. I am taking it with breakfast (7:30 am) and I’m starving by lunch (12:00pm). Should I take it later in the day? After reading the comments above I think I may need to take it around lunch time. Also, I haven’t lost any weight yet, but I didn’t think I would after only a week. Help! Thanks!

Lynne

AskDocWeb: The directions say to take the 75 mg tablet in midmorning.

Subj: Purchase on line?
Date: 4/13/2008
I have used this in the past and it works very well. Where can this product be purchased on line?

Robinette

AskDocWeb: Sorry, when it comes to medication, we recommend you buy locally.

Subj: Question about Tenuate
Date: 4/21/2008
My question is about Tenuate. I tried using it and first took half of a 75 mg, and took a whole pill the next day. My face and lips started to swell, my sinuses became blocked and I had severe pain in my head and neck. I stopped using it after the 2nd pill and after a few days it seemed to clear out. This was about 5 months ago. I am now having pains in my head. I have had some sinus problems recently and pains in my head. Is there any way that this medicine could be the original cause of my current problem? Thank you.

Susan

AskDocWeb: Sorry Susan, you need a physical to determine what your current problem is before you can determine the cause.

Subj: I don’t have much energy
Date: 5/16/2008
I have never used tenuate, I used topamax which is generally used for migraines I used it as an appetite suppressant. I have lost over 40 lbs. in a year or so. I have kept it off for 3 years, by still keeping a 150 to 200mg dosage. I went off and had a baby. I went back on lost most of the weight. It is constipating me, and I think it’s the cause of my inability to digest foods properly. So since, I have been off it for 3 1/2 months and gained back 10 lbs. I’m also anemic at times, docs say its my period. My question- should I try tenuate now, or go back to topamax. I have low blood pressure so that’s not a factor. I don’t have much energy now, so maybe an amphetamine type suppressant will be good for me. Any advice?

Joyce

AskDocWeb: Only your physician can say for sure if Tenuate is safe for you or not. This website is for helping others by sharing your experience of side effects.

Subj: Tenuate review
Date: 6/6/2008
My Dr has had me on Tenuate for the past 36 months. I’m suspose to take one 75mg tablet per day, however many times after taking that one I want another, and another etc until I take roughly 10 over a 2 day period. I eat nothing over that time, feel pretty good and get TONS of work done, however… After the 2 day “binge” I am exhausted and starving constantly for the next couple days.

I’m a 45 y/o white 5’8″ male and have weighed around 270 for the past 3 years. It seems I loose a few pounds during the binge but gain it back & more during the purge. Before anybody starts yelling at me, I know I am abusing this drug I guess but it’s been so long it’s sort of a way of life now. I have not told my Dr I am doing this in fear he will cut me off and that’s something I don’t think I can handle.

One good thing has come out of it though. Before I started taking these I was highly addected to vicodin & the like and shortly after starting on these until now I have had no desire for the pain meds and have been off them. I’ve read through the symptoms you have on the site and the ones that effect me the most when I have a high level of the drug in my system are blurred vision, hard to urinate/darker urine, hot flashes and tire easily when doing physical work. Ringing in my ears constantly and I notice I get mad easily.

I am going to try very hard this month to muster up the will power to take just one per day. He also has me on 2mg of Ativan per night to help with my insonmina and 10mg a day of Lisinopril. Wow, I didn’t think I could put all that into words! Thanks for listening!
