Subj: Seizure
Date: 1/23/2007
I had started taking Ultram on Friday, by the following Saturday, I had fallen down hit my face and broke my jawbone. Think I had a seizure. Sunday morning had another seizure almost died, if the LORD hadn’t put his hands on my boyfriends hand, because I had swallowed my tongue and had stopped breathing. I ended up in the hospital. Didn’t know any of the side effects at the time, but do now.

Subj: Ultram forever
Date: 1/24/2007
I am a 62 year old white female and I have been on Ultram for about 6 to 7 years. I had back surgery but it’s for my legs. I had such leg pain before my back surgery and with the surgery it help some but was not able to get off Ultram. I don’t know if it is hurting my kidneys or liver or any other part of my body but I do know with out it the pain in my legs are unbearable. I just pray that God will keep me safe. I have other health problems and take other meds. I take 4 Ultram per day so unless someone could help tell me some other way to help with the leg pain (caused by nerves) I guess I will forever take the Ultram. Would enjoy hearing from someone over my email. Thanks,
Terry (Charleston SC)

Subj: Ultram is both addictive and dangerous
Date: 1/24/2007
Do NOT let any doctor, pharmacist or anyone tell you Ultram is not addictive nor dangerous. It is both. First it took away my pain, then it took away my depression and finally it took away my dignity. I do not doubt it can be safely prescribed for some, but docs need to know how destructive it can be, It is not classified as narcotic, but I had the same withdrawal. It must NEVER be prescribed to anyone with an alcoholic or addictive history.

Subj: Angry about Ultram withdrawal
Date: 1/30/2007
I have arthritis and fibromyalgia and with it comes considerable pain. My doctor gave me Ultram a few years ago because it was “non-narcotic and non-addictive”! I took very few every day, but it really helped the pain. It also gave a slight euphoric feeling. When I decided to go off it because if I didn’t take at least 1/2 pill regularly, I had stomach cramps, anxiety and a very restless, jumpy feeling. The withdrawal was very uncomfortable. I could not relax or sleep. I was angry that this was marketed as non-addictive, as I feel it is very addictive! Now they are coming out and saying it possibly could be addictive! Believe me, this drug is very addictive and I would not recommend starting it at all. I took Vicodin after surgery for a couple of months and had no problem stopping it. Ultram was way worse! Don’t start it!

Subj: This drug kills!
Date: 2/5/2007
I just had a grand mal seizure due to tramadol, and because the drug gives a false positive for PCP in your urine I was also classified as a drug addict. I was also questioned and treated as a criminal in the hospital. While I was in my hospital bed my wife was subjected to so much emotional abuse it was unbelievable. Now I am going thru all of the same withdrawals, can’t sleep hot cold sweats flu like symptoms sore throat runny nose etc. I cannot drive for 6 month because of the seizure. Don’t take this drug please!!!

Subj: Severe pain after surgery
Date: 2/8/2007
Hi all, I am so glad to have found this site. I am a 60 year old woman who has been prescribed Tramadol 50mg.4 times a day for over 2 years for severe pain after surgery on my cervical spine for a degenerative condition. I have been having extreme sweats and flushing both night and day, can only sleep for 2 hours at a time and only manage about 4 hours sleep a night, the strange headaches and feelings in my head someone else has described earlier also increasing pain in my spine. When my son’s father in law was visiting at Christmas he mentioned he had been put on Tramadol and was now suffering from the sweats etc. On Friday I spoke to my Doctor about this and said I would like to stop the Tramadol to see if it was causing the problems, she never gave me any warnings and prescribed paracetamol and Ibrufren to replace the Tramadol so I took my last one on Friday night and as I have now discovered went cold turkey. At 6am Monday morning I thought I was going mad with things crawling all over me, agitation, severe itching in strange places, sickness, pain and of course I had not slept since Thursday night. Luckily I realized it could only be the Tramadol or lack of it which was to blame and have taken it again. I am so glad I found this site as some people here have obviously managed to come off the Tramadol and I am now cutting it down I am taking 50g 3 times a day but am still having side effects but will now persevere and hopefully perhaps slowly I can come off this drug. I am also going back to my GP with print outs of some of your stories and am going to demand that this is reported. Thanks again for your help.

Subj: The worst side effects
Date: 2/10/2007
I was originally on ultram CR, and some other pain pills like lorcet. I quit them cold turkey. I had the worst side effects that I thought I wanted to kill myself. I was depressed, anxious, and cried all the time, and was very moody, nausea, and severe sweats. I then called my primary care doc. He put me on generic ultram 50mg. He said you can’t just stop like that you have to ween off of it. I started taking only 2 a day for 1 week, then 1 a day for a week, then 1/2 a day for 1 week and thought that was it and I was done. This is since last Friday. Now I had a bad cold in between this, and still I am feeling funny like tired, sweating, not sleeping good and depressed more. Is this normal to feel this way after being off of the med for a week. Oh I forgot I also suffer from anxiety and depression. That is the worst to have that along with this.

Subj: Ultram as a last resort
Date: 2/18/2007
I experienced a terrible fall when I was 12 years old, right around the time of puberty, and severely injured my back. My condition is considered “stable” but cannot be corrected without surgery which is costly both monetarily and time wise-which are two huge factors in my life considering I am a student with no money. I tried body braces, physical therapy, chiropractors, exercise, stretching, massage therapy, Ibuprofen, etc. Each thing did its job for a little while but was never “the answer” to my pain.
Well now it’s 13 years later, I’m 25 years old and I live in chronic back pain everyday of my life. I have to rate my pain on a scale of 1-10 each day to monitor how bad it gets and what the causes can be (weather, too much activity, muscle strain, period, etc) I have tried almost everything including narcotic as well as non-narcotic meds and to be honest Ultram is the ONLY thing that helps me. It masks my pain long enough for me to sit through 8 hours of classes, enjoy a movie, get through a night of work and have a somewhat normal life. There are definitely side effects: burst of energy, slight drowsiness, nausea, trouble sleeping but none of them are too bad.
My body has grown so used to this medication but when I try to go a day w/o it the pain is unbearable. I have had to increase my dosage as the years have gone by due to a growing tolerance. I worry about my liver, kidneys and motherhood. I have read about the negative effects it can have on babies and it terrifies me. I know I will have to stop taking Ultram while pregnant but wonder how I will get through a day w/normal pregnancy back pain in addition to my existing injury. Overall I recommend this medication if you have exhausted all other options and have no other alternative. It will work but you have to be prepared to stop taking it one day which will be extremely difficult and painful. I don’t think anyone should have to live in pain but this drug can lead to future pain. Good luck.

Subj: The downside of Ultram
Date: 2/20/2007
I’ve been taking ultram for about three months and found that it works fine for the relief of pain. The downside is that it is addictive like heroin. One of the side effects that I experienced were sexual hallucinations. Now, as an alpha male this wasn’t a bad deal, and it didn’t harm anyone, but I had to realize that it was all fantasy and not real. I’ve decided to taper myself off gradually. Don’t stop it abruptly; it will feel like you’re kicking heroin. If you are an ex-drug addict like myself, do not delude yourself into thinking you can control this. Talk to someone about it, preferably your doctor, and follow his advice.

Subj: Horrible drug
Date: 2/26/2007
I had been on this horrible drug for over 10 years. I never took more than six a day. But because I am in so much pain from chronic kidney stones and a whole lot of other stuff this is what they give me. I no longer take it. I even called the drug manufacturer and ask them to please take this drug off the market, it is horrible! My kidneys are all messed up. I have a smell in my nose like ammonia. Not on my body but I can smell it in my nose. I throw up and my pupils dilate. I twitch, and stumble and still the doctors will not give anything else because of the damn government, this is insane. People are getting too sick off this drug. It needs to be banned.. please don’t take it.. take my word.. don’t!
