Subj: Crazy drug
Date: 2/27/2007
I have been taking Ultram for 5 years for unexplained pain. What a crazy drug, anything from feeling great to feeling like your whole body is a giant tooth ache. Recently my doctor and I decided I had enough of the Ultram (about 200mg in 12 hours). So I started Cymbalta about 30 days ago (30Mg a day) and started lowering my Ultram about 25 mgs. a week. Terrible withdraw symptoms, widespread pain, stomach problems the shakes, restlessness, nausea, you name it, I feel like a junkie. I figure it will take me 3 months to get totally off Ultram. Unless your gonna die, DO NOT START THIS MEDICATION. I am in hell everyday. At first it was a miracle drug. Now it is a horror flick. Sincerely,

Pat

Subj: Don’t go cold turkey
Date: 3/2/2007
I was prescribed ultram in hospital after suffering a nasty ruptured appendix. I was sent home with some and continued from the doctor for 1 month. I then tried to stop and it was pure hell. I couldn’t focus on doing anything. I just wanted to sleep but couldn’t. I sweated and shivered, staggered, slurred my speech and generally felt like I wanted to die. Not being aware that this was withdrawal I ended up back in hospital for tests as I thought I had an infection from the surgery. I was put back on ultram and felt brilliant. I then realized when all of the tests were negative that I was addicted to ultram and I started to buy it from the Internet. DON’T. It is very expensive but I was so terrified of going through the withdrawal again that I continued to buy it. I have now run out before the next batch has been delivered and am going through all of the excruciating symptoms again. After reading this I have decided to taper the drug very gradually as I don’t want to be an addict and hopefully I can kick it. Do not take this drug if you have any choice. It has ruined my life.

Subj: Tramadol ultram
Date: 3/5/2007
Is tramadol the same as this ultram? If not then what are the side effects of it? Thanks,

Larry

AskDocWeb: Yes, Ultram is a brand name for the drug tramadol. It is the same drug.

Subj: Stopped cold turkey
Date: 3/7/2007
I have taken Ultram for pain off and on for the past 3 years. At one point I found that I was needing to increase my dose to get the same effect so I stopped cold turkey. I was only taking 1 a day (occasionally 2). I had about 3 days of severe depression and paranoia. It was awful. On the other hand, while taking Ultram, I found great relief for back and neck pain and I had a huge burst of energy. If you are going to stop taking it, wean slowly and just keep reminding yourself that the withdrawal depression is normal and it WILL go away. Many of the other side effects I have read on this website are normal as well. I found I was never sick a day while taking Ultram (a good side effect), but as soon as I stopped taking it, I would get a cold or the flu. Now I know it was withdrawal thanks to the information provided on this website. Good luck to all of you who are suffering. Chronic pain is a horrible thing to live with we all just have to do the best we can. Sometimes it is a trade-off.

Subj: Ultram was horrible
Date: 3/12/2007
Ultram was horrible for me. I was taking it for pain from a rib fracture, and it did nothing but make me feel awful. I got an insane headache, my chest felt like it was going to explode, I felt nauseous, threw up a lot (not a good feeling with a fractured rib!), was very dizzy, and I felt like I was burning up but I had no fever and I was sweating a lot. It felt worse than when I had the flu! It didn’t really help my pain either.

Subj: Ultram hell
Date: 3/15/2007
I started taking ultram 2 years ago for my back pain I was having. I had terrible headaches… I mean bad ones! Then a year ago my legs started hurting… I had tests run etc. They found nothing wrong. I was told keep taking Ultram for my pain. Ultram is dangerous! Very addictive! Also will cause depression ! I quit cold turkey 8 days now… my legs are already getting better slowly.. Please stay away from it as it is HELL! I have been through the worst and with Gods help.

Subj: Ultram side effects
Date: 3/20/2007
I started taking ultram 200mg per day in late Nov. 2006. I have a burning sensation all over my body ever since I had a cervical fusion c5-6. About 6-8 wks after my surgery, I woke to find myself burning all over. Ultram is the only thing I have ever gotten relief from. My surgery was 10-2003. I have been so sick ever since I started it. I have had major stomach issues, lost about 25lbs., and chronic diarrhea. I stopped it cold turkey and have had withdrawal symptoms also. My chronic diarrhea is no more and my stomach pain is getting better.

Subj: Apprehensive about taking Ultram
Date: 3/29/2007
I have been reading all the feed back on ultram. I am being treated for depression and have been for several years, I have a scoliosis and fibromyalgia, astioarthtis, and am a diabetic. I am apprehensive about taking this drug. I was taking hydrocodone, it made me itch, so they put me on endocet. It made me itch so now they want me to try this. How can this effect my mentally? I take Wellbutrin and celexa for depression.

AskDocWeb: Predicting the affect of using multiple drugs is beyond the scope of what we do here. This website is for feedback from users so you can find out the side effects that the drug companies don’t tell you about, it’s pretty scary sometimes.

Subj: Pain free
Date: 4/9/2007
April 9, 2007 I have been taking Ultram up to 300mg ER/day. Last week I had the ANS Spinal Cord Stimulator test unit ‘stuck’ in my spine. It is similar to the bio-tens unit I could not do without, but, due to allergy to the patches, can’t wear daily. The Stimulator test was successful, but when they did the test implant, my 40-year back pain from an injury in Vietnam nearly disappeared. I had already dropped the 300mg Extended Release tablets for some of the side effects mentioned above including some male stuff that males don’t want to have. The test unit was removed today and I am down to one 50mg tablet – at least today. I expect some or all of the side effects outlined, but I will give it a good try. When the pain returns and I believe it will, I hope to have other things including the Stimulator. It is a life-long battle. I am 67. Tomorrow I may be depressed and sleepless, but today I am pain free and that is a blessing!

Subj: What ultram does
Date: 4/11/2007
I’m just writing to give a husband’s observation of what ultram does. My wife takes it for pain relief. I don t want to go on about her medical condition but, she needs it to function and take care of our 4 girls. She is a wonderful lady and I love her bit, this drug makes her tired, moody, and irrational. I wish there was something else we could get her on. Yes we have been to the pain clinic, done that and a lot of other treatments. If anyone has suggestions, please send them my way.

Subj: Ultram withdrawals
Date: 4/12/2007
I used Ultram everyday, 50 mg, for several years. I used for arthritis pain, and found it acted as a good antidepressant as well. I had to taper off gradually, as trying to go cold turkey results in apathy, suicidal ideation, and cold-like symptoms. I had become habituated to other narcotics in the past, and I can tell you that Ultram withdrawals are longer lasting and worse than any others I have experienced.

Subj: Side Effects subside?
Date: 4/20/2007
I am very new to Ultram due to a knee injury. My first dose was a blessing – it made my knee feel much better and the swelling reduced. The next day I had to work, and reading made me feel quite sick (although food at lunch seemed to help for a while). By the time I got home I was quite dizzy and had to vomit. After resting a bit I was still light headed, but felt better. It is now the next day and I had to forego the Ultram because of fear of throwing up again. The knee pain and swelling has returned, and I have a headache. Will the side effects subside if I continue my assigned dosage? If I have to choose between walking and throwing up, I’d be rather torn…

Dave

AskDocWeb: No they probably won’t subside. You might want to ask your doctor for another pain medication so this won’t happen again.

Subj: Chronic back pain
Date: 4/23/2007
I have been using Ultram for three years for chronic back pain. It prescribed for me when I left drug treatment for an addiction to Vicodin. They say Ultram is not addictive, but I know it is. I have tried several times to quit taking it because I started hearing that people were having to seek drug treatment to get off of it! The bad thing is that I told my boyfriend about it because of his chronic gout and now we are both addicted to it! When we try to quit….the anxiety is overwhelming….you can’t sleep…you get cold symptoms such as sneezing….coughing and body aches, as well as diarrhea, nausea, headache. So ask yourself if it is worth it. It looks like I get to go back to treatment so I can detox medically…I can’t do it on my own! Please don not make the same decision I did! It is addicting and the withdrawal is worse than Methadone or Vicodin.

Subj: Ultram side effects

Have used ultram on and off, had night sweats, and trouble sleeping. Now I see it can cause, sore throat, running nose etc. Celebrex is drug of choice, but it can have same side effect, as well as Lunesta, which I was taking as a sleep aid. I have been sick with sore throat, earache, URI for three weeks while taking Lunesta, and Celebrex on occasion.

Subj: Just one was too much
Date: 5/2/2007
I just started taking on 5-1 and I am already sorrow I did the pain went away but it made me feel rotten after just one dose. I was dizzy all day and I took it the night before I broke out in a sweat and sick to my stomach. I will not take anymore of the drug ultram. ER. Just one dose was enough for me. I will keep the pain until I can find something else.
