Subj: Chronic joint pain
Date: 5/4/2007
I have severe, chronic joint pain. I started Ultrem ER about a month ago. It works very well, BUT, I had sleepiness for the first two weeks and not when I took the pill, but towards the middle of the next day. I have some strange vision problems while driving, but I’m careful, before I get in the care I drink something with caffeine. It helps. Just this week I had an incident with depression. It lasted about 48 hours, then went away. I am a very “up” person but understand very well what the symptoms are. I called my doctor immediately and I’m working on how to manage this. I want to figure out how to manage the sudden depression with the fact that this is the only medicine that has given me relief. Thank you to all of you for sharing. I wondered if the sudden, severe depression could have been caused by the Ultram ER. I now know that others have also had side effects. I also appreciate the information on “withdrawal” symptoms. I do not have an addictive personality- very little affects me long term, but it is good to know that this may be a problem. One suggestion, I’ve tried both the regular Ultram and the ER version. The ER version, though more expensive, is much better in the long run. It may help with not getting hooked on 8 pills a day. It is once a day, usually at night, and only once a day.

Subj: Feels like ten million ants
Date: 5/4/2007
I have been taking Ultram for two weeks now. I took ten yesterday, not knowing I shouldn’t take more than 300 mg a day. At this very moment I am having withdrawals from it. My body feels like it has ten million ants in it that are trying to get out. Anyone know what the word is for this. Help me out if you can. Thanks,

Angel

AskDocWeb: Some people say their skin tingles, crawls or they have a prickly sensation but it sounds like you may be having an adverse reaction. Contact your doctor when that happens.

Subj: Killer headache
Date: 5/8/2007
I was given Ultram from my doctor to help pain after I got a cyst removed from my heel, and I still use it for dance pains. He gave me Ultram because I can’t have anything with Codeine in it. The problems I had with the drug was when it was wearing off I got a killer headache that would last for two days, having to sleep for a day before I felt normal again, and stomach pains. Depending on the person, if you take Ultram for more than a week and then stop taking it, you will go through withdrawals, and you can get an addiction from it.

Subj: Withdrawals are not fun
Date: 5/11/2007
I have been taking Ultram consistently for 6-7 years and I suggest slacking off it. After a while it does not work and reading the above…the withdrawals are not fun…probably dangerous. I do know there was a class action suit several years ago regarding the addiction of Ultram. I’m still taking it because I don’t want the withdrawals…like taking a vitamin now. How very sad for me.

Subj: How long does withdrawal last
Date: 5/16/2007
I have almost all these symptoms, I’ve only been on Ultram for about 1 month. I was taking about 4 pills (50 mg) a day, but I’m only 18. I quit about 4 days ago and I have severe anxiety. I have no previous mental problems. Does anyone know how long these symptoms last?

Robert

AskDocWeb: The worst of it passes in the first 3 or 4 days but some symptoms may last up to two weeks maximum.

I’m just about to start taking Ultram. We will see how it works. This might start to worry me.

Subj: Ultram withdrawal?
Date: 6/12/2007
I have an urgent question; My 76 year old Mother in is a Georgia ICU with her blood pressure staying extremely high, 210/110 and two days before that, for almost 24 hours it was 245/165 or somewhere close to that range. She seems to have developed almost an instant case of Alzheimer’s disease – all of which started when her Doctor started cutting down her Ultram. She has been taking it almost since the day it came out for fibromyalgia – and that’s over ten years ago. The Doctors can’t figure out what is wrong with her and she is near death. She went in after an apparent drug interaction with something else and hasn’t received Ultram since, but is getting plenty of other pain killers. The first day she was in the hospital she had several seizures, all of which I have been reading about elsewhere on the Internet and appear to be associated with Ultram. For more information in regard this case, please read: My Mom’s Medicaid Nightmare: Updated – A turn for the Worse http://justanothercoverup.com/?p=203 If there is any possibility that these extreme symptoms could be related to Ultram withdrawal even while she is receiving other painkillers, I’d really like to know about it. Thanks for your time.

Subj: STOP THE ULTRAM!
Date: 6/22/2007
I have tapered off Ultram, and doing great 🙂 Down to 2 a day. I will start taking 1 tomorrow for a wk and then I am DONE! You must have strong will power to get off this horrible drug. I just wish I had done some research on it before taking it. It’s a drug that works with the brain… like not being able to sleep when stopping it or lowering the dose. Who would want something like that! I feel sorry for the elderly that is on Ultram, and trying to stop. With me even tapering I have had withdrawals. I am not going to let ULTRAM beat me though, I want my soul back sort of speak. As being on ULTRAM took so much from me! I got depressed, crying like crazy on it… just wasn’t ME. Now I am finding ME again. I am taking vitamins, which is very important as I have read getting off Ultram. Also drinking lots of water. Be strong and fight getting off with all you have. Ultram is just not worth it, as just taking small amount as I did can be addictive. Prayers to you all 🙂

Subj: STAY AWAY FROM ULTRAM!
Date: 6/22/2007
I’m still young, closing in on 28 and I was in a near fatal car accident with a 18 wheeler at age 18. I have been on pain killers/relievers for many years. I have also suffered from severe Depression and Panic attacks my whole life. I was given Ultram by my doctor who is very aware of my Depression. I used ultram for about 3 months, 50mg tabs about 5 times a day. It was wonderful, at first it worked great to relieve my pain even better than most of the narcotic pain relievers I had used, but it was not to long before I started to have bad side affects, odd heart beats, severe Vertigo, sweats. Soon I had made my mind up to stop and I did it cold turkey, which I do not suggest if you can ween yourself off, do. The withdrawals were HORRIFYING, the SEVERE Depression I went through was incomparable to any of the Depression I have ever felt in my LIFE. To me it was so intense it was beyond Depression. The closest thing I can compare the feeling to is Severe sorrow like after you lose a family member but almost worst than that, unstoppable crying, Panic attacks beyond any I have ever experience before and I have been on medication for panic attacks for over 3 years, and sleeping is near impossible. If you are thinking of starting Ultram, I would suggest DO NOT START, but if you do be VERY CAREFUL, Thank you for listening and Good Luck.

Subj: Severe pain
Date: 6/24/2007
I used Ultram for two days only! I experience severe pain from Guillian Barre Syndrome residual symptoms. The first pill of 50 mg. gave me instant relief although it started a headache that would not quit. I felt tired, nauseous, and had a migraine-like headache that lasted for 30 hrs. Relief of the neuropathy pain was 100 %. I can’t take Ultram because of the horrible side affects with just two 50 mg. tablets.

Subj: Coming off tramadol
Date: 6/29/2007
Hi, I’m coming off tramadol, cold turkey, my GP said that this was the only way. I am now four days in to it, and feeling very rough. I don’t think she will perscribe anything for me to help. Any suggestions?

Rebecca

AskDocWeb: If by “feeling rough” that means nausea, that can be helped by your physician. If it means that you’re unable to sleep then you could try Tylenol PM. Continue to drink a lot of water and take walks to take your mind off of any withdrawals.

Subj: Stopped taking Ultram
Date: 6/29/2007
I’ve been taking ultram for only a week I stopped taking the medications because I no longer needed it that same day I felt really depressed, extreme body pain, stomach ache, anxiety, and had a really tough time sleeping which included tossing and turning body aches sweating and suicidal thoughts.

Beto

AskDocWeb: These symptoms need to be reported to your doctor, please do that.

Subj: Ultram withdrawal
Date: 7/6/2007
I was on ultram for a couple of months due to migraines. It was great. Helped with pain, gave me wonderful energy, and a great kind of buzz so to speak. My doctor and I figured out my migraines were from my TMJ and went a different treatment route. I didn’t notice anything the first two nights after stopping ultram. Around the third night it was horrible. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t be still, had to keep getting up and walking. My legs and arms had to keep moving constantly. I have never had this before and this was my first and LAST time of ever taking ultram. Please be careful taking it. Even though it’s non narcotic, I can honestly see how someone could become dependent on it. Good luck everyone!

Subj: Get off ultram
Date: 7/12/2007
How do you get off ultram being on them 7 years non stop? What can you take to get off them or at least help?

Thomas

AskDocWeb: You can decrease your dosage slowly but we suggest you consult with your doctor. Depending on the symptoms you are having your doctor may be able to prescribe a pill to help alleviate the side effects.

Subj: Miscarriages
Date: 7/16/2007
My husband is addicted to Tramadol and I have had two miscarriages one when I was only 6 weeks along and now 14 weeks, could the tramadol have anything to do with it?

Diane

AskDocWeb: Birth defects and miscarriage have been reported in animal studies of this medication during pregnancy but not when the male was taking it and the female wasn’t.

Subj: 8 months pregnant
Date: 7/16/2007
I’ve only been taking Ultram (actually the generic version, tramadol) for the past couple of days. I’m 8 months pregnant and I injured my back pretty badly – doctor gave me Lortab first and then switched me to the tramadol. It doesn’t eliminate my back pain, but it helps a bit. Leaves me feeling a bit lightheaded, too, but not nearly as intensely as the hydrocodone products do. I don’t intend to take it long enough for withdrawals to be an issue. I can get by on a maximum of two 50-mg tablets per day, along with some Flexeril and a heating pad. I’ve been through the withdrawals that come from narcotics in the past and I refuse to repeat that experience!
