Withdrawal after short-term use of Ultram
Date: 4/26/2012
Only one week? I took Ultram for 6 days, about 4-5 per day, for arthritis pain. I then took 3 for one day, 2.5 for one day, 2, 1, 1. I started feeling withdrawal effects at 2! I didn’t sleep at all last night – anxiety and sweaty. I’m not dying, but I’m confused. I didn’t think it was possible to become dependent on anything that quickly? I’m not craving it, just feeling the withdrawal. Will this last as long as everyone else reports?!?! That seems crazy! Thanks.
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Most of the reports here are from those who have used Ultram a lot longer than you did. Since you used it for such a short period of time, the effects should wear off much quicker.

Tramadol is a tough drug to stop
7/25/2012
My experience with Tramadol is very much a love/hate relationship. I was prescribed this drug when I broke my leg, but because I have neuropathic pain associated with a disease of my nervous system (CMT), I continued on the drug. Mind you, I broke my leg 2 months after having a baby had experienced a horrific drug withdrawal from Neurontin when I was told to get off that drug cold turkey. I have been using Tramadol for 5 years. I was up to 8 pills/day, but I have weaned myself down to 3 pills/day.
This drug does an excellent job at keeping the pain at bay, but it is very, very addictive. If you do not take it within a reasonable amount of time, you experience flu like symptoms…lots of aching all over your body. When I was considering getting off the drug, I spoke with a psychiatrist that specializes in getting people through a drug withdrawal, and they took Tramadol very seriously. They said it was a tough drug to stop. I wouldn’t take it if you don’t absolutely have to, but I do understand that having chronic pain can be very depressing/debilitating.

Horrific withdrawals
8/9/2012
I’m sad to see all these people suffering 🙁 I take tramadol for chronic upper back pain from an extremely horrific auto accident. I couldn’t live with the pain and I was very depressed. I couldn’t care for my small children while on opiates or muscle relaxes!! I can’t be high or out if it and the worst I can’t be sleepy/exhausted all the time! I love tramadol and will continue to take it. I got pregnant again two years ago and weaned off of it within a few weeks. I did feel my back pain & I was exhausted and very cranky but none of the horrific withdrawals you get if you just stop (done that before & avoid that at all costs).
After the pregnancy I took low doses and breastfed my son. He is happy and healthy and never experienced any problems with the drug. Multiple resources say it is moderately safe in pregnancy and safe in small doses for breastfeeding.
We are trying for another baby so I have to stop taking tramadol this week. I’m NOT looking forward to it. Mostly I miss the energy happiness and PAIN FREE life I have while on the drug. But the craziness and exhaustion and stomach aches etc from withdrawal (even a slow and careful one) really suck!!! Can anyone give a good recommendation for stepping down off this drug with minimal withdrawal effects? My doc shrugs and I can’t find a good chart or info anywhere!!!

Zoloft and tramadol?
8/30/2012
My doctor just prescribed me zoloft and tramadol, i read online that it can be deadly and very harmful to mix these together.

AskDocWeb: That is correct and that combination is generally avoided. However, in some situations the potential benefit is deemed to outweigh the risk. Patients treated with that combination are typically closely monitored for signs of excessive serotonergic activity such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, muscle spasms, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, seizures, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.
Slight dry mouth
9/28/2012
I’ve been taking Ultram for nerve pain related to a herniated and degenerative disc. I tried opioid narcotics with NO relief. I could barely walk around and could not sit. Within 45 minutes my pain dropped from a 8/10 to 3/10. After a couple of days my pain was 1/10. The only side effect I experienced was slight dry mouth. It works great!

AskDocWeb: That is a question best answered by your personal physician who can instruct you in the best way to wean off this drug. You should know that many doctors are unaware of the withdrawal symptoms of this “non-narcotic” medication.

I have begun having pain in my knees and elbows since stating to take ultram. Is this a normal side effect? Should I stop taking ultram?
