I’ve found that ultram can do wonders if not abused. I am 36 and have one crooked back and one really bad shoulder. I have pain all the time but it’s a low dull pain. It finally put me into a deep depression that lasted ten years from when I was 26. I haven’t dated or done anything I use to like for ten years. I found ultram and it saved my life. It isn’t a cure-all but it helps me have a few good days out of the week that I never had before. I get the flu like symptoms too and the sweating. But if I take just small doses like 25mg at a time it doesn’t happen and take with a little bit of food.

Not too much food or you could get sick. Compared to depression and back pain, the side affects are well worth it to me. I also get a little itchy from time to time. I never go over 200mgs a day and I always take the ultram at small 25mg doses. Also I do 5 days on and 2 days off. I don’t need another monkey on my back so I want to make sure I don’t get addicted to this stuff. So far I have had no trouble doing with out it except after 3 to 4 days my depression comes back. It might seem worse then before but it really isn’t. It is just that when you get use to not being depressed you start to take your normal feelings for granted. I think it is good that I start to feel what I had without ultram so I can appreciate how much it really helps me. Also I use neurotine. Stay away from fatty foods like cheese and milk. Only lean meat. Cut out softdrinks because of the phosphorus. Too much can react with ultram and make anxiety like feelings appear. Diet really effects this drug but once you get the hang of it you’ll know what real life is like. I get happy, sad, angry, and all those feelings now but they are for reasons and events of life. Not constant feelings of doom and unforgiving pain. I wouldn’t wish what I’ve gone through to my worst enemy. which by the way is know one. I love life know and I know part of it comes from ultram. I
am sorry for the bad grammer but my xp office went loopy on a restore and I have no spell checker working right now. I never was the best speller. Peace and love and no, I am not a hippy tree hugger. I am just in a good mood. Hope this helps someone.

Subj: Advice about ultram
Date: 6/2/2005
My advice is to get off this drug A.S.A.P. I took it because I had A problem with my knee. It made my knee feel better but has controlled my life since. I was taking 30 pills a day… The problem with taking this drug is after a while the dose must be increased for it to keep working for you. In actuality your setting yourself up for a dangerous side affect that I never knew could happen. One day I got home from shopping and I went to the med cabinet and took 9 pills. That’s how bad it got over the years. One pill used to work than two than three and so on. At the rate I was going by 2007 if I was still a live I would be chugging a bottle a day, maybe more. Well my rude awakening came that day when I got home from shopping. Like I said I took 9 pills sat down at my desk…

Next thing I remember I was in the back of an ambulance. I had a seizure. I never had a seizure in my life and it does not run in my family. It was the direct result of me abusing this drug over a 2 year period. It finally took its toll. Who was I kidding I’m not stupid I knew that eventually this would happen. I did not know it could do what it did. I never researched it enough. Anyway I decided to go cold turkey and that did not work. I started getting pains in my finger tips and feet. Almost like I was being shocked or something. I was not able to get any sleep tossing and turning to the point where I would get out of bed and find myself walking around my house.

Now after some research I realized I have to take this slow. I was taking about 30 pills a day sometimes more now I’m down to 6. I take two when I get up, two at dinner and two at bed time. It seems to help. In two more days I will knock it down to 5 pills. I will do this for a week or so. Than I will drop it to three. My goal is to be off this drug 100 percent by July 15th. If you’re concerned about taking this drug you should be. Start stopping now. Start cutting your doses not increasing them. I’m still open for suggestions and help.

I have not yet seeked help from a doctor but I may have to. I told my wife about this and she is great and is helping me. I’m very lucky to have her to help me. I will try to report back so that maybe I can help people before they get to my stage. I’ still consider myself lucky I’m still alive. If there was nobody around when I had my seizure, there is a good possibility I would not be writing this right now…

Subj: Irritated
Date: 6/4/2005
I begged my gyno for something for relief from mind numbing menstrual cramps. she RX’d this for me. This med just makes me feel irritated, itchy all over and very sweaty. Not to mention the nausea it causes on top of the cramps. I wanted vicodin b/c I know it stomps out the intense pain from these fibroids that I have. I’m not taking it anymore.

Subj: Panic attacks
Date: 6/9/2005
I take ultram but at times have panic attacks; I don’t know if it from the ultram or not; I used to have them and was given antidepressants like prozac and zoloft and took them for 12 years but I quit taking them last December. I wonder if I need to go back on antidepressants. Recently I broke my arm and had lortabs and felt great. The ultram though doesn’t make me as drowsy. Any way, I don’t know if the panic attacks are from the ultram, lortab withdrawal, or just needing an antidepressant!

Subj: Questions about Ultram
Date: 6/9/2005
Hello I am 26 years old, and my gyno, has prescribed Ultram. Is this safe and what are the side effects, are there withdrawals coming off the drug. Thanks,

Lori

AskDocWeb: We would not recommend this drug to anyone unless absolutely necessary. There have been reports of bad results coming off of this drug. You could try Tylenol or Ibuprofen instead, unless you absolutely need Ultram, and then take it only for a short period of time.

Subj: Withdrawal question
Date: 6/12/2005
I have been taking tramadol (generic ultram) for a couple years now for severe pain in my hip. It has gotten so bad I can’t exercise or even do a brisk walk because the pain will keep me up all night. My doctor started me taking the ultram, prescribing up to 4 (50mg) a day but only gave me a prescription for 60 tabs. She increased the quantity after 6 months.

I have had some of the same problems as others. I feel so much better when I take it, and since it was a prescription drug I thought it couldn’t possibly hurt me, but lately I have been trying to cut back and had terrible withdraw symptoms. I don’t know if I should completly stop or just cut back. Will the withdraw symptoms be as severe if you are not taking as much?

Darla

AskDocWeb: If you cut back gradually, the withdrawal symptoms won’t be as bad. Be sure to let your doctor know that you want to reduce or quit this medication. Good luck Darla.

Subj: Problems with spine and Ultram
Date: 6/21/2005
I have been on and off Ultram 50mg. sig. 1 or 2 tabs. 2 to 3 x daily for 3 laminectomies (all in lower spine) in the 80’s that have just started giving me horrible nerve pain down my leg and also had a tkr (total knee replacement) 3 years ago. I guess in total I have been on ultram about 1year on and off. I have read most of your comments and am surprised to say the least and scarred as well. I don’t get this high from the drug like so many of you report, I am able to do my normal routine however and am pleased as opposed to just laying in my bed and having to take something stronger like vicodin…maybe that is the high. The one thing I don’t like from ultram is, I sweat like a pig. It can get a bit embarrassing at times especially when I’m out with my husband and we are dining with friends. If I take the ultram regularly it controls my pain pretty good to where I am functional. I am guilty of forgetting and then waiting to long and then well you all know, the pain is out of site and I want to eat all the pills I have…not really but you get my point. I was started on neurontin for a month and I did have some success except I gained too much weight (side effect- weight gain) so now I am on topamax (side effect..weight loss) ha ha. You would have thought they would have taken that into consideration as extra weight on disintegrating joints wouldn’t be a good move, oh well. I do hope all of you do well and I do appreciate all your time and honesty you have given. You sure have helped me. Hopefully some of me has helped you too. Soon to report if the topamax has helped but I will report back and I will use my Ultram as prescribed. You all take care out there…

Karen

AskDocWeb: Remember that Ultram is a treatment for the symptom, not the cause. It sounds like you may be suffering from spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the space inside the spine that causes nerve damage. We suggest you ask your doctor about getting an MRI to find out for sure and pinpoint the problem so that they can do something about it.

Subj: Severe pressure sensation
Date: 6/29/2005
I have been taking Ultram 50MG for approximately two years because of Fibromyalgia. If I go past my 6-hour timeframe to take another Ultram, I experience a severe pressure sensation in my head; it isn’t accompanied by pain, but does cause a sensation of Pressure change when I get up and walk around. Is this something I should be concerned about? I am making an assumption that this is caused by the Ultram.

Debi

AskDocWeb: Yes, a sensation of pressure, or a change of pressure in your head is a concern. Have this checked out by your physician.
