I started taking Ultram (tramadol) for migraines and pelvic pain which turned out to be endometriosis. I know it says it isn’t addictive but it most definitely is. I have been taking it for two and a half years and purchasing it on-line for about $400 a month. I was taking up to and sometimes over 30 pills a day (for years) and you aren’t suppose to take over 8 pills a day. One of the side effects of tramadol is seizures, and I had my first one (a sign of overdose) three weeks ago. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, and I haven’t been to the hospital since I was two!
So the experts say it isn’t addictive?? I am not stupid, and I am here to disagree and tell the experts I have lived it. I have 3 college degrees and one based in medicine, but I kept abusing this medicine even after the seizure. I told myself I just took too many that day, and all was fine for two more weeks and then I had another seizure. That is when I made a commitment to myself to NEVER take it again. I have been in withdrawals for about 5 days. My memory is very bad since my seizures, I can’t remember what day of the week it is, what I have just done, and I am barely in my 30’s. The withdrawal symptoms and the addiction is VERY real. It doesn’t matter how smart or strong-willed you are…it will affect you (I thought I was stronger than the drug). I am living proof of that. Please consider any other alternative you may have or if you choose to use this drug stick by the prescription EXACTLY! I don’t want anyone to go through what my family and I will be facing the rest of our lives. God Bless You, and I hope you make the right decisions for you.

Subj: I thought I had the flu
Date: 1/8/2006
I just finished 6 months off using ultram for lower back, hip, and leg pain. In the beginning I used I used it sporadically, but for the past few months I have taken a pill a few times a day, every day. I just stopped three days ago because of hemorrhoid problems that have become progressively worse. I thought I had the flu too, but after reading all of this, I think it probably isn’t. So… I can’t sit down, I can’t sleep, and I want to be in rage about every little thing. Why do some info packs tell me ultram is an opiate, and others say it isn’t?
Mic
AskDocWeb: According to the Physician’s Desk Reference it is an opioid analgesic that can cause a host of symptoms similar to that of other opioids.
Subj: Addictive or not?

Agreed that ultram can be a blessing and will give you energy. But, and there is a big but! If you read enough testimonies from abusers. This is one of the reasons why they are taking it. I just got off the phone with my nurse asking her again if this stuff is addictive. She says no, that is why they use it so much. I am going to disagree forever. I have been with out ultram for a day and a half now. I feel so horrid and it must be withdrawals. I didn’t sleep last night, got restless leg so bad, hot and cold sweats. This is NOT! Normal! I do not abuse this drug but I know this drug is abusing my body. I couldn’t even hardly get out of bed today until 1:30, thought a bath would help, nothing. I would rather be pain I am having now is ten times the pain I had prior to ultram. I have the heat cranked to 80 in my house and still have goosebumps and bad sweats! I wish I could sleep, but that has not happened all day. I also have a couple of friends who are clearly addicted to this. That is what rose my curiosity in the first place. One of them is pregnant and she went from taking percocet for so called migraines to this. Both of these girls come begging to me if their prescription is out and they cannot get it for a day or two. I haven’t given any because I felt like I would have been dealing drugs. Now I understand why they HAD to have it.
Bottom line–steer clear!

Subj: Effect on ovulation of Ultram
Date: 1/21/2006
I have been taking ultram for two years for ovarian cysts. Could it have an effect on ovulation, in other words, can it prevent a woman from ovulating? Thanks.
Mrs. S
AskDocWeb: No it shouldn’t prevent a woman from ovulating.
Subj: Addictive drug

Tramadol is absolutely addictive at higher doses than 50mg. I was up to 700mg a day for a couple weeks. One day I was feeling like total sh*t, depressed, jittery, runny nose, tired/no motivation. My classic personal symptoms of withdrawal. But I couldn’t figure out why. Then it hit me, the Tramadol, I went to my source and picked up some more. I took a 300mg dose and felt COMPLETELY better by 3 hours later. Tramadol should have been marketed as an anti-depressant. At the recommended dose of 50mg it doesn’t seem to have ANY effects medically or recreationally.

AskDocWeb: Others have reported depression (to the point of suicide), blackouts, flu like symptoms, insomnia, cold sweats, back pain, restless leg syndrome, nausea, vertigo, anxiety, muscle aches, fatigue, headaches (lasting 10 to 16 hours), shakes, and an itching feeling as if they had fleas.
Subj: Ultram during pregnancy?
Date: 2/23/2006
Hey, my name is Terra and I am 21 years old and have one three year old plus am 7 1-2 months prego. I have been on loratab with my first child and this one too, it makes me sick and not eat so I thought I would switch to ultram witch does really well and does not make me sick but is it harmful to my unborn child? Anybody took it and had healthy babies still please help?
Terra
AskDocWeb: Nursing while on Ultram is not recommended. According to the Physician’s Desk Reference, taking Ultram while pregnant has caused neonatal seizures, neonatal withdrawal syndrome, fetal death and still birth, although they do not give numbers or percentages for these events.
Subj: Two years on Ultram
Date: 2/25/2006
I have been taking Ultram for about two years now for severe lower back pain resulting from the forming of scar tissue after a laminecomy. It has been the only thing allowing me to get out of bed in the morning. I have experienced major body aches, primarily in my legs, after not taking the medicine for a day. I have recently started experiencing patches of itchiness combined with increased body heat in the areas of itchiness. Is this something I should be concerned with?
Eric
AskDocWeb: Yes it is a concern, especially if there is any redness around the areas that itch. Please talk to your doctor about this.
Subj: Ultram withdrawal unbearable
Date: 3/2/2006
Ultram is a deceptive and dangerous drug, and if your doctor tells you that it is not addictive, CHANGE DOCTORS!! It’s every bit as addictive as heroin or any other narcotic. It may not be called a narcotic but the effects of taking Ultram are similar to taking narcotics. I started taking it when it first came out, and I too thought I had found the miracle drug. I’ve had bone pain for the past 10 years now and found that Ultram was the one thing that actually helped. Needless to say, after taking it at the recommended dosage of no more than 2 pills four times a day, it became less and less effective, so I took more and more pills. Once I realized it was getting to a dangerous point, I attempted to stop, but the symptoms of withdrawal were unbearable. I’ve never been addicted to anything in my life, but the withdrawal symptoms couldn’t be any worse getting off heroin or coke or alcohol. I had muscle jerking in my arms and shoulders, severe pain in my joints, skin pain, felt like I was crawling out of my skin, and depressed more than you can imagine. After 10 days or so, I could finally manage to function a little but even a year later, I’m still not to the point of function that I was before the Ultram.
There needs to be a class-action suit against the company that produces this medication. It’s promoted as safe and nonaddictive which is a total lie. It will eventually come out that Ultram is just as addictive as any other narcotic and much more dangerous because it’s presented as safe. I have read many stories about people taking up to 40 pills a day to keep from going insane from withdrawals. I’ve almost hit that point myself a couple of times. I hope anyone taking this devil medicine will stop before it’s too late and especially if you’re pregnant. I can’t imagine an infant coming into this world addicted to this horrible drug and having to survive withdrawals. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. I’ve read the stories where people say it’s a lifesaver, and I thought it was too, but let those same people try to stop taking it and see how they feel then.
Ultram sick
AskDocWeb: I am very glad you have shared your horror story of ultram. Many others have also suffered the way you are right now.
Subj: Sick of being addicted

Today is my first day without Ultram. I have been on this medicine for 8 years. First I took 2 pills a day 100mg. Gradually I noticed I needed more to stop the pain. (I fractured my spinal cord and have harrington rods and wires). I started taking 6 pills a day…2 AM, 2 lunch and 2 dinner. About 2 years ago I weaned myself down to 2 in the AM and 2 in the PM. My husband started noticing my short term memory loss, inability to articulate what I wanted to say…Needless to say last night I began my own research and am now scared to death. This drug can affect your liver and kidneys. And we all know we can’t live without our kidneys. Currently, I’m experiencing sweating, restlessness, headache. But I refuse to take any more ultram. I just took an Aleve and I’m going to drink water all day to flush this crap out of my system. I’ll let you all know how I do tonight. I’m sick of being addicted to a drug which wasn’t supposed to be addictive. I was taken off percocet and prescribed ultram. The ironic twist to this…I was only taking 2 percocets a week, only when I absolutely needed it….then I was put on a daily drug (Ultram) which I had to take twice a day… What a mess!
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Yes, what a mess. Please let us know your outcome after being off this pill for a few months. Good luck. Read more feedback on Ultram. Ultram report – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – Page 9 – 10 – 11 – 12 – 13 – Last Page 46
