Subj: Valtrex is the best
Date: 5/13/2005
I recently started to use Valtrex for oral cold sores. It is the best thing I have found. The creams help, but taking a pill that works from the inside out is a lot better. I use Valtrex with Abreva. Abreva alone would take about a week to clear up, and it would blister and be very noticeable. With Valtrex I wait about one day and it is scabbed and no blisters ever. The one thing is you have to take it right when you feel the tingle. I carry it on me every where I go just in case. I would definitely talk to your Doc. If you are thinking about it, it is expensive but worth it 100%.

Subj: Breakout while pregnant
Date: 5/18/2005
I am in my first trimester, and think a breakout is coming…can I take Valtrex?

Lyn

AskDocWeb: You need to consult with your OB/GYN to find out if it is safe for your situation and condition.

Subj: Prescription Valtrex
Date: 6/2/2005
I was prescribed with Valtrex 1 gm because of a cold sore on my upper lip which made my upper lip huge. Anyway, I was told to take 1 gm twice daily until 4-5days. I started to take 1/2 during work time but let me tell you wait until you get home. I felt very, very sleepy. Get back to you soon.

Subj: Long term use of Valtrex
Date: 6/11/2005
I have been taking valtrex for a few years now. I get very bad cold sores, and sometimes genital herpes. Are there any long term side effects on my organs, liver, kidneys? Also is acyclovir as effective for suppresion? And are the long term side effects the same with acyclovir? I have heard that one can build up a resistance to acycovir if used for a long time. Is this true with valtrex?

Karol

AskDocWeb: While it is possible for your body to build up a resistance to some kinds of drugs, that type of resistance is not what we are talking about here. The problem of building up a resistance in this context has to do with the virus, not your body. If viral replication is only partly suppressed, the virus has a tendency to build up a resistance to the antiviral drug used to treat it. This is a major concern because once the virus becomes resistant to an antiviral drug, that drug resistant form of the virus may be transmitted to others.

Subj: What dosage?
Date: 6/11/2005
What is the dosage for cold sores? My Dr. gave me 500 mg pills. I’m not sure if I take 2 pills at the first onset of my cold sores or if I take 1 pill. Again the pills the Dr. gave me are 500 mgs.

Subj: Breast pain
Date: 6/16/2005
I recently had a large, painful swelling on one side of my gums along the lower side. After the dentist being baffled, he sent me to an oral surgeon, who believed it was viral, sent to family doctor. The family doctor was doubtful but gave a scrip for Valtrex, 1 dose. Several hours after taking the med., my lower lip on the affected side grew to twice its normal size (with pain), then back to normal and the swelling on the gums was gone within 3 days. The gum pain began to lessen within 24 hours. My first question is – I have had numerous breast lumps removed, the most painful one was one that the doctor commented on as being “right on the nerve”. I have constant breast pain, however, for about two weeks after the Valtrex the breast pain was gone completely. Is there a possible connection? The second question–if I can get the doctor to give another scrip for the Valtrex, am I running a risk of an allergic reaction after the lip swelling incident? The third question–if the Valtrex was what made the breast pain go away short term, what might be the best dosage to make it leave permanently? Thank you, looking forward to an answer,

Sue

AskDocWeb: Yes, you may be running the risk of a serious allergic reaction if you take it again. It sounds like you need the help of a specialist, ask your doctor to recommend one.

Subj: Valtrex and breastfeeding?
Date: 6/17/2005
is it safe to use Valtrex while breastfeeding? Also I had it during the last month of my pregnancy, is this safe? Thanks,

Tanya

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer puts it in category B and recommends caution with breast feeding. That means do not take it unless told to do so by your doctor.

Subj: Valtrex does wonders
Date: 6/19/2005
I have been taking Valtrex since October of 2004. It has done wonders for me. Yes, I was tired but changing my diet and exercise has brought back all my energy. The only side effect I notice is sexual desire. My fiance is currently overseas but my desire does not increase unless it is around my monthly. This is the only thing I have noticed.

Subj: Spinal pain
Date: 6/22/2005
I have started taking valtrex some six months ago, and within the last two months, I have been experiencing spinal pain and odor from vagina, and I have had my period for over six moths. Please advise accordingly.

Maxine

AskDocWeb: You need to see a gynecologist about this, it isn’t normal at all.

Subj: Alcohol and Valtrex
Date: 6/30/2005
Can I drink beer while taking valtrex? Will it hurt me?

Lindsey

AskDocWeb: If you are legal age then yes, you can drink beer with Valtrex.

Subj: Allergic reaction to Valtrex
Date: 6/30/2005
I just started on Valtrex yesterday because I had a GH cold sore on the corner of my mouth (and slight outbreak downstairs) that wasn’t going away. I have had this embarrassing cold sore for 16 days and it wasn’t going away. I took one pill (1 gram)of Valtrex around 5pm and had a really bad stomachache and headache. Today I had a huge red spot in the middle of my lip and nose. It looked like a zit – which I don’t usually get. I also noticed a red ring on my bottom lip that I didn’t have previously. My original cold sore was burning and more red than the previous days. A little later today my right eye began bothering me. After that a red spot appeared a quarter inch below my right eye and next to the top of my nose. This caused a lot of anxiety for me – was I getting this condition in my eyes? Was it a rash or allegoric reaction? Is this product supposed to make your condition worse before it gets better? – are my questions. I got home late from work and couldn’t call the doctor. I very hesitantly took my second pill today. Any interaction with my experience would be most appreciated.

Mike

AskDocWeb: This is not one of those medications where your condition gets worse before it gets better. It sounds like you might have an allergic reaction. The headache and stomach pains should be your first clue that you are unable to take Valtrex. You may want to have your face checked out by a dermatologist. He would have the best recommendation for you.

Subj: Valtrex and yeast infection?
Date: 7/12/2005
I am also looking for information on the relationship between valtrex and possible candida growth. I noticed that this question was not answered above. Does taking valtrex increase the chances for yeast infection?

Michelle

AskDocWeb: No, Valtrex doesn’t cause a yeast infection or prevent you from getting one. Valtrex is an antiviral medication. It affects viral growth but yeast is a fungus, not a virus.

Subj: Valtrex for fibromyalgia and Chronic fatigue syndrome
Date: 7/13/2005
I have been taking Valtrex as needed for over two years now for fibromyalgia and Chronic fatigue syndrome and it has done a fantastic job of getting me almost back to normal. I would recommend this to anyone with those two illnesses before they get on the usual doctor medication plan of pain pills and anti-depressants. A person I tried to get to do this, just recently died of an overdose of pain medication.

Subj: Allergic reaction to Valtrex
Date: 7/15/2005
I have been taking daily Valtrex for about 5 years now with just a few out breaks in that time. However, now I an experiencing severe allergic reactions, with difficulty breathing and running nose. This year the worst attack I have had and it has lasted for more than 3 months now. What should I do?

Bronxamc

AskDocWeb: Anytime you think you are having an allergic reaction to a medication, seek medical help immediately. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. You may just need an adjustment to your dosage. On the other hand, you may save your life.

Subj: Hallucinations and rash with Valtrex
Date: 7/16/2005
I’m assuming I was allergic to Valtrex. My fourth day of taking it, I started hallucinating and I had a rash. And then the hallucinations came back 2 weeks later. I was on 2 grams a day, I’m 17, and I weigh 94lbs. Could it still be in my system for this long?

Amelia

AskDocWeb: We suggest you talk to your doctor about this, but they should be out of your system by now.

Subj: Found Valtrex
Date: 7/19/2005
A person I’d been intimate with had a prescription for Valtrex (500 mg twice a day for 5 days). The prescription had about 6 refills. From the dosage – what does this person have, HSV 1 or HSV 2? should I be concerned or get tested? Is it at all possible that the prescription could be for any other condition? anything else however remotely connected?

J

AskDocWeb: You know that Valtrex is an antiviral medication and that should be enough to concern you. We suggest that you voice your concern to that person, be open and ask.

Subj: Can anyone help me?
Date: 8/2/2005
Hi, my name is Gary. I’ve been having herpes symptoms for about 7 months. I had sexual intercourse with someone on January 1, 2005. 11 days after I had fever and flu like symptoms. I than developed a sore at a pretty painful spot on my penis. Its a pretty good size. I don’t get much of a break with symptoms. I get them a lot. The sore however will not break open. It’s skin color, with a faint white tent. I get tingling off and on all the time, along with burning pretty often. Its been 7 months and blood test for hsv1 and hsv2 are still neg. Can anyone help me? I’m on 3 to 4 percocet a day, and I don’t know how long I can take it. I’m getting too close to giving up. I never thought I’d say that but enough is enough. To whoever replies, YES I HAVE TRIED EVERY ANTIVIRUL. PLEASE HELP,

Gary

AskDocWeb: It may not be a virus. It could be a bacterial or fungal infection.
