Suffering of daily prodrome
Date: 2/11/2012
I have a hsv2 and I’m on daily suppressive therapy but suffering of daily prodrome. tingling all over my legs, outside of my genitals, my bum. It’s constant all day. How do I know when am I having contagious symptoms before outbreak?? It’s very stressful for me because I am scared to have sex because I dont know when I’m infectious to others.
Rea
AskDocWeb: Although daily suppressive therapy can reduce transmission to partners, transmission can occur even when no symptoms are present. How likely is that to happen? According to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, people who carry the genital herpes virus but have no visible symptoms are still capable of spreading the virus about 10% of the time.
Kidney disease
Date: 2/12/2012
I believe I have developed kidney disease from prolonged daily use of Valtrex to prevent outbreaks of herpes. My doctors assured me that side effects of daily regimen were minimal, even after I asked if I should stop for a while. My creatinine level is suddenly high with no other causes (High BP, obesity, etc.) and I suspect Valtrex is the culprit. Read warnings carefully and BEWARE this drug. Kidney disease is not reversible and in late stages can be fatal. Insidious because there are NO symptoms that your kidneys may be failing until damage is irreversible.
Fran
AskDocWeb: According to the FDA, patients with kidney problems may have a higher chance of getting more kidney problems by using Valtrex. This risk increases for the elderly. Kidney failure is not common but can be serious in some patients taking Valtrex. Please note that during the clinical trials, kidney failure was seen in some patients who were not adequately hydrated. It is important to make sure you are drinking enough fluids to stay well hydrated.
Feeling out of sorts
date: 2/17/2012
i saw my dermatologist yesterday. The small patch of shingles on my right arm is dry & has no stinging anymore. I took 2 generic tablets of valtrex & I’m experiencig heart palpatations, red swollen cheeks & a feeling of overall nervousness. I’m waiting for his call. I don’t think that these pills are agreeing with me. I also feel out of sorts in general. I’m feeling lethargic & agitated at the same time.

How long is shingles contagious?
Date: 2/20/2012
Was wanting to know I am on valtrex taking 3 a day for 7 days and I got 3 days left on it. How long does it take to know if I am still contagious or not? I have shingels btw.
Micheal
AskDocWeb: Shingles may be transmitted to anyone who has not had chickenpox. The shingles rash is contagious until all of the blisters have scabbed over and are dry. The time it takes for that to occur varies with the individual from 7 to 14 days. A person is not infectious before blisters appear or after blisters have scabbed over. Nor are they infections with post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone).
Higher Valtrex dosage
Date: 3/1/2012
I have taken Valtrex 500mg for about 20 years for suppression. I have had great success. I have now entered into menapause and now find that I am starting to break out again. The doctor increased my doseage to 1g and I just do not feel good at all. How long should I stay on the higher dose?
Debbie
AskDocWeb: There isn’t a set amount of time to be on the higher dosage. The 1 gram dosage may be once a day or three times a day. It varies with the individual and which type of herpes is under treatment. Over half of patients (55%) taking one gram of Valtrex daily are recurrence free after 6 months.
Anxiety
Date: 3/3/2012
HI I am fearful of taking valtrex because everytime I have taken it, it has caused me severe anxiety. Does anyone else have this side effect and is this a known side effect?
Rebecca
AskDocWeb: The exact incidence rate has not been established but anxiety has been reported by a small percentage of patients taking Valtrex.
Suppressive therapy
Date: 3/4/2012
Valtrex is great and it really works well for me. The clinical studies I paid for indicate that 500mg daily is appropriate dosage for suppressive therapy. I find that if I take 500mg every other day I won’t ever break out (3 yrs), but that’s me. I find that I feel cardiovascularly inefficient as a side effect, and I’m only just now realizing that what I’m really experiencing an elevated blood pressure. Regarding the readers below taking 2-3 grams a day with significant side effects– I’d feel like crap too! That’s way too high. 1000mg daily is plenty during outbreaks. I usually do 1500mg the first day to kick start it, but be smart and don’t take it all at once!

Mental fog
Date: 3/20/2012
I took valtrex last night before bed. Today I am in a fog, have waves of anxiety, and elevated blood pressure. I have not taken any more pills, but how long will this last….?? It’s been almost 24 hours and, while the anxiety has severely lessened, I am still in a bit of a fog…
David
