Relieve nausea
Date: 6/16/2012
How can I releive nausea after taking Valtrex?

Taking Valtrex

AskDocWeb: Valtrex may be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help to prevent nausea that might be caused by the medicine. Natural remedies for nausea include ginger, golenseal, licorice and peppermint.

Insomnia, terrible headaches and joint pain
Date: 6/20/2012
I was prescribed valtrex about 2 years ago after having recurrent genital herpes outbreaks for 35 off years and treating with diet and zovirex. The treatment cuts short and or stops an outbreak, when I take the maintenance dose. I have been reluctant to take the maintenance dose but if not the last year tend to have outbreaks every 6 weeks or so of varying severity.

Am a triathlete. Recently have begun to notice a correlation between not sleeping at night and terrible headaches which wake me, plus joint pain. I had put the joint pain down to exercise, arthritis and age. Anyway I read the site and am going to cut out the valtrex and see, as the headaches and sleeplessness come back each time I take the meds.

Also the flat mood which comes with herpes, prior to the blisters appearing, seems to hang around longer now as I take the meds. I just thought it was my mood combined with increased need to eat chocolate based stuff and nuts (both of which trigger or are precursors to an outbreak)

Sorry this is so longwinded but am interested in others experiences, and am aware that the symptoms of the herpes are similar to the ones described here.

Suzette

AskDocWeb: Thanks for sharing Suzette. Up to 38% of patients taking Valtrex report headache as a side effect and up to 6% report joint pain. Because sleep disorders have so many possible causes it usually takes the help of a sleep clinic to sort it out. Have you tried Lysine?

Shingles vaccine and allergic to sulfa drugs
Date: 6/21/2012
I would like to get the shingles vaccine as my boyfriend was diagnosed with it on his face and eye. Everything has healed except for the eye which is still red and I can see 2 lumps. I’m wondering if I can get Shingles from him and secondly I read that if you’re allergic to neomycin, you shouldn’t get the shingles vaccine. I was told that Im allergic to all sulfa base drugs when I was a teenager. However I just discovered a friend who got the vaccine and she is allergic to sulfa drugs too! Please let me know. Thank you

Pascaline

AskDocWeb: An allergy for sulfa drugs is not a contraindication for the shingles vaccine. That vaccine is not a sulfa drug. However, you need to know that you can’t catch shingles from someone who has it. What you can catch is chickenpox but only if you have never had it and the vaccine will not protect you from that.

Terrible anxiety ande irrational fears
Date: 6/29/2012
I was on Valtrex 1 gram 3x daily for seven days for shingles. Around day 4 I began to experience anxiety like I have never felt before in my life. I am now 6 days past my last dose and I am having terrible anxiety, irrational fears, and intruding thoughts. I’ve never had any of these symptoms in my life before. I am seeking treatment from my physician but its not working well. I’m really becoming hopeless that I may never feel Luke I did before taking Valtrex and hopefully it doesn’t ruin my family and my career.

Ears ringing
Date: 7/11/2012
I took I believe 3 valtrex tablets for a cold sore. 2 at 10 am and 1 12 hours later. I think the tablets were 700 mg each. That was 6 days ago. An hour after taking the first one my ears started ringing (more like cicadas). This has been non-stop. Is it possible to be from the Valtrex or just a coincidence?

Sheri

AskDocWeb: Although it may be possible, that ringing sound (tinnitus) is not listed as a side effect of Valtrex, which would make it very rare.

I never had symptoms until I took valtrex
7/16/2012
Hi I was diagnosed 4yrs ago and was put on valtrex right away. I took it for 2 weeks and had to stop because I was getting vulvo pain and head aches. I told my doctor and he diagnosed me with vulvadynia but I knew he was wrong I never had symptoms until I took valtrex.

I stopped taking the pills and the pain stopped a few weeks after I’ve been taking olive leaf supplements and other pills to keep my immune system up. It worked for a while but now I am getting OB again and I might have to try again. I am hoping that this time I don’t have any side effects. If I do then I might try the generic wish me luck and I will keep you guys posted.

Amanda

AskDocWeb: Thanks for sharing this Amanda. Besides the olive leaf, have you tried any other immune building supplements? It would be helpful for other women with this condition to know what worked for you and what didn’t work. Good luck!

Vulvodynia is a chronic pain syndrome that affects the vulvar area and occurs without an identifiable cause. It refers to pain of the vulva which cannot be explained by vaginal infection or skin disease.

Angry?
7/17/2012
I feel angry when taking valtrex. is this normal?

Bbking

AskDocWeb: Anger is one of the rare side effects of Valtrex (less than 1%). Although it appears that the older a patient gets the more likely they are to experience changes in state of mind (agitation, hostility, irritability, anger, crabby, cranky, etc.) while taking Valtrex.

Lymphoma
8/1/2012
I been infected with the HHV2 virus for many years but started taking Valacyclovir a few months ago and suddenly I developed a lump in my lymph glands in my neck. Turns out its Lymphoma. I stopped taking the Valacyclovir as i was having no symptoms of the virus and the lump seemed to decline in size but my the virus started giving my symptoms so I started taking it again. Within a few days the lynph glands swelled up noticably and new lymph glands became enlarged or infected. I am about to start chemo for the lymphoma and my sense is that Valacyclovir has something to do with my current condition but there does not seem to be any evidence on record. Still, my intuition tells me there is more to this story than we know. Scary to think that you could get cancer from this drug!

Trey

AskDocWeb: You may be right about a connection between Lymphoma and Valtrex but it may not be what you think. One of the diseases that Valtrex is used to treat, human herpes virus 8 (HHV8), has been identified as a possible cause of lymph node cancers.
