I have 2 questions
Date: 2/14/2015
I have taken my 4 pills 2 pills for one dose & 2 pills 12 hours later. That was 4 days ago & it’s just now starting to clear up. I have 2 questions. 1 is how long have I been on the medicine can I have sex with my partner? (oral) 2. I have read about the different time frames when it’s in my system for so excatly how long does it stay in my system for it to be completely gone? Please & thanks!
Mary
AskDocWeb: The answer to your first question depends on several things that require evaluation and needs to be addressed to your doctor. The half-life of Valtrex ranges from 2.5 to 3.3 hours in subjects with normal renal function. It typically takes 5 times the half-life for the body to clear a drug from the system to the point where it no longer has any effect on the body. So if your kidneys are healthy you can figure 16.5 hours at the most.

About 2 weeks ago I used neosporin on my cheek for a small bump 2 days later the area was red and inflamed and got to the touch went to dermatologist for labs lab said it was herpes 1 and a secondary staff infection I was prescribed valtrex but every time I took the valtrex my face got much worse the blisters didn’t even appear until I took the valtrex soni stopped it and just continued taking the doxycycline for the staff and 5 days later looks 100 percent better! I realize now not to use anything with neomycin in it and i did lots of research and valtrex does have neomycin sulfate in it! Despite what the dr says I know better!!! Do antiviral medications effect birth control pills?
Date: 3/1/2015
Hello, I tried to read forum of questions pretty close but I haven’t found the answer on my concern. I m taking a birthcontrol pills and first day I m taking Valaclovir Tablets. Is Valacyclovir considers as antibiotic or not? I understand that it is antiviral tablets but just in case, does it decrease the power of birthcontrol pills. Thank you and sorry if my question looks stupid.
Keistina
AskDocWeb: No, it is not stupid. You have a valid concern. Fortunately Valtrex and other anti-viral medications do not interfere with birth control pills.

Binocular diplopia
Date: 6/23/2015
I just finished 20 days; 3 pills per day as prescribed by my physician. I developed binocular diplopia after the 4th day. Will the double vision go away and when, now that I am off Valacylovir. thanks Louie oh, for shingles on left side of dead and eye.
Louie
AskDocWeb: Since there are about 20 possible cause of double vision you will need a complete visual evaluation from a Doctor of Optometry in order to get answers to your questions. The causes range in severity from something as benign as dry eye to life-threatening such as intracranial tumor so get it checked out.
Long term Abreva use
Date: 7/16/2015
After several years with a partner who has herpes, I finally got it about a year and a half ago. I started taking Valtrex right away, and my first outbreak was very mild. Between the Valtrex and the Abreva, I have been able to manage the symptoms. But I didn’t like being on Valtrex. I reasoned (rightly or wrongly) that if I reduced my dosage gradually, it would allow my immune system to ramp up gradually, without the massive outbreak going cold-turkey might cause.
I bought a jeweler’s scale and started reducing the dosage by 10 mg every couple of weeks. This made me remain pretty much in a state of near-breakout for the last year+….Others couldn’t see it, but I could feel it. By doing this, and using a lot of Abreva, I have been able to reduce my dosage, with my friends and co-workers none the wiser. I started at 1 gram and am now down to 200 mg.
Here is my question: Is there any indication that long term Abreva use is harmful? I know that steroid creams are used carefully because they can cause problems if used too much…does Abreva have any down sides?
V
AskDocWeb: Abreva is not recommended for use longer than 10 days. If you think you need to use it more than that you should contact your health care professional for advice as it could be a sign of a more serious infection. With the exception of a possible allergic reaction, no serious side effects are expected with Abreva. If you suspect an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face) seek emergency medical attention.
Intense hip pain
Date: 9/11/2015
I was given Valtrex and after taking 2 Gms a day for 3 days I experience intense hip pain which radiated to my abdomen, groin and tibial area….it was AWFUL. It appears it is a rare side effect but I think physicians should be aware of it…mine told me to see an Orthopod.

Shelf life

I have Valacyclovir that was dispensed 10/23/13. Is it still safe to take?
Karen
AskDocWeb: The product data we have says that Valacyclovir has a shelf life of three years. If have doubts about any medication’s expiration date you can call the pharmacy that dispensed it and they will tell you.
Bacterial Vaginosis
Date: 10/19/2015
Hello. I am currently taking valtrex with my second pregnancy and since I have been on the valtrex I have already had a Bacterial Vaginosis. I just finished my medicine of metronidazole about a week ago and it cleared it up. But now a week later I think I have the start of another BV infection. So, my question is, can taking valtrex be causing me to have these infections? I didn’t have any problems up until I started the valtrex and now I’m at risk for preterm labor, low birth weight and even a miscarriage.
I’m scared to death to keep taking the valtrex as I believe it’s the reasoning behind me getting the BV infections. I was also diagnosed with herpes simplex 2 when I was 16 and I’m now 24. I didn’t take valtrex with my first pregnancy, and never had any of these issues. I’m also seeing a different doc this time and my first doc with first baby didn’t put me on anything until a month before my due date. I’m currently 21 weeks pregnant right now. Thanks for all your help in hopes to giving me an answer I’ve been looking for.
Gerrie
AskDocWeb: Bacterial vaginosis is common in women. Recent research shows that herpes can cause you to have it more often. That said, the two conditions are totally separate from each other. Valtrex works by acting on the virus but it has no effect on bacteria. See Bacterial Vaginosis for more.
