Subj: Prescription Vaniqa
Date: 10/25/2008
Can vaniqa be prescribed by your primary doctor?

Kathy

AskDocWeb: Yes.

Subj: Head hair
Date: 10/26/2008
Many people have written about the possible side effect of thinning head hair. Has anyone reported head hair returning to normal after discontinuing use of Vaniqua? If so how long after discontinuing will a difference be noticed? How long does Vaniqua stay in your system? People are reporting more hair growing on their face months after discontinuing use of Vaniqua. After stopping use will everything eventually return to what it was before use??? Thinning hair, more areas of excessive facial hair, eyelash thinning etc… Approximately how long if at all can we all expect the thinning and such to stop??

Annie

AskDocWeb: Those who have had a problem with loosing scalp hair have reported that the growth of scalp hair returned to normal “a few months” after discontinuing Vaniqa. After discontinuing treatment with Vaniqa, facial hair growth has been reported to approach pretreatment levels within 8 weeks. There have been no reports of scalp hair loss continuing beyond two months after discontinuing.

Subj: Excess hair
Date: 11/7/2008
I’m 14 years old and I have excess hair almost everywhere including cheeks, chin, upper lip, even my stomach. I’m a very attractive person but because of this excess hair I cant even look at people in the eyes, because I’m so insucure about them seeing my excess hair. The excess hair is black, so I always bleach it, but it doesnt last long for me anymore. I REFUSE to shave, wax, or any use any products because I dont want the hair to grow bak even thicker and more stubbbly. I HAVE VANIQUA but since I dont shave or use any hair removal products, I dont know exactly what results I’m looking for. Am I gunna notice a difference in the hair growth even tho I dont use a hair removal product on my face? Will the hair fall off of my face or will it jus keep it from growing more? THANK YOU.

Kayla

AskDocWeb: Vaniqa will retard the growth of hair but it will not make the hair you already have fall out. It may be difficult to notice any progress if you don’t remove the hair that you have now.

Subj: Already see a change
Date: 11/14/2008
I have been using Vaniqa for about 2 months. I already see a change. I use to shave my chin everyday. Now I shave every other day. Hopefully the days in between shaving will grow further apart. Also the hair that is growing in isn’t as thick and it’s coming in, in smaller patches.

Subj: Vaniqa or laser hair removal?
Date: 12/31/2008
My facial hair is dark and when I try to pluck them, they always cause ingrown hairs. I had teenage acne and am currently using a product with hydroquinine to help fade my dark spots. Would I be a good candidate for vaniqa or should I consider laser hair removal. Also can this be purchased without a prescription.

Guesso

AskDocWeb: Vaniqa is a prescription drug. You would need to consult with a dermatologist to find out if you would be a good candidate for either approach.

Subj: Use Vaniqa and Retin-A on the same area?
Date: 1/1/2009
I have been using Vaniqa for 6 weeks and have noticed a reduction in facial hair. I have a question about the use of Vaniqa and Retin-A on the same area of the face at the same time. Is it safe to apply these 2 at the same time on the same area of the face?

Susan

AskDocWeb: We would check with a dermatologist before trying to use them together or even on alternate days.

Subj: Wrinkles?
Date: 1/14/2009
Does Vaniqa cause wrinkles around the mouth if used on around lips?

ks

AskDocWeb: No wrinkles have been reported from the use of Vaniqa.

Subj: Side affects in the long run?
Date: 1/19/2009
I’ve been using vaniqa and didn’t realise it was only for your face I’ve put it on my legs arms an bikini line will it cause any side affects in the long run? Also does vaniqua work better on people with course dark hairs rather than people with fine blond hairs or does it make no difference?

Gemma

AskDocWeb: So far no long-term affects have been reported. The manufacturer makes no reference to any differences in effectiveness for the color or quality of hair.

Subj: Transgendered males?
Date: 2/20/2009
Are there any studies of this product on transgendered users or on males? I am interested in the product.

Anonymous

AskDocWeb: If there are such studies we have yet to hear about them. You may want to look at an alternative called Hair Removal Plus, it works equally well on men and women.

Subj: Waxing?
Date: 3/2/2009
Hi, I have facial hair on my cheeks and under my chin and I wanted to ask if I use this cream will I have to start getting my face waxed as well because I’ve never had my face waxed as I get it bleached.

Malz

AskDocWeb: There is no mention in the product description of any need to start waxing. Vaniqa will slow the growth of facial hair but it may take a couple of months to notice an improvement.

Subj: What happened with the poor woman?
Date: 3/7/2009
I just got my prescription for this product but haven’t tried it yet. I am very sensitive to side effects of different drugs and I am very curious to know what happened with the poor woman who’s head hair is now falling out. There is no response to her depressing story. That is enough right there to make me not even try it. Thank You.

Missy

AskDocWeb: She didn’t report back after her initial post. The loss of scalp hair is not listed as a side effect of Vaniqa so that may be a rare side effect.

Subj: Huge improvement
Date: 3/11/2009
I started using Vaniqa about 4 weeks ago and see a huge improvement, especially on the heavy chin hairs. I’m happy with it so far. Thanks.

Katie

Subj: Price has increased
Date: 3/13/2009
I have been using your Vaniqa hair removal product for a year now and I have barely seen any improvement. I have also noticed that the price has increased to $87 at Walgreens. I’m beginning to feel this is a huge waste of money. Please tell me why it isn’t?

Subj: Persistent acne problems
Date: 4/11/2009
I really love the way Vaniqa lightens my upper lip hair – I almost require no tweezing or bleaching at all anymore. In the beginning, I did not suffer any ill side effects, however in the last 1-2 months I have been having persistent acne problems and I finally realized it was only in the areas where I put the Vaniqa. I have been using the same tube of Vaniqa for 9.5 months and I’m still not really running out (meaning I don’t have to struggle to get the remaining medication out). Is it possible that I just simply need to get a new tube of Vaniqa because it’s just gotten old somehow? I keep it in my bathroom drawer at room temp. It doesn’t expire until 2010. I really don’t want to stop using the Vaniqa, but I think I’ll have to go back to bleaching than deal with all the pimples if there’s no solution. Help!

Kirsten

AskDocWeb: Getting a new tube wouldn’t make any difference. Acne is one of the possible side effects that may go away during treatment. If it continues or becomes bothersome, check with your doctor.

Subj: Dark hair and red spots
Date: 4/11/2009
Three years back I got laser on my face(chin & upper lip) but know I shave every day to remove the dark hair on my face due to which small red sports are there on my face. And I feel bad to go in front of people because they make fun of me. Will this product help me or should I get laser again please help. (my complexion is white)

Nikki

AskDocWeb: While there is a possibility that it might help, you should consult with a dermatologist to be sure.

Subj: My skin looks better
Date: 4/14/2009
Hello. I have started using Vaniqa about two and a half weeks ago. I was very embarrassed but I finally went to see my DR about it. I have already noticed some improvement in my skin, it looks better and the growth seems to be not as thick. Hopefully it keeps improving! I would say that it’s at least worth a trip to the DR to talk to them about it.

Subj: Negative comments about Vaniqa?
Date: 4/16/2009
Why do negative comments about Vaniqa not show up on this web site? Vaniqa (Eflornithine) was used for cancer treatment.

Diane

AskDocWeb: There are many negative comments about a verity of products here. If you have something negative to say, go ahead and say it.

Subj: Vaniqa worked fast for me
Date: 4/17/2009
I heard about Vaniqa several yrs. and never tried it until my chin started getting so bad I could tweeze everyday. The day I picked up my Rx I went to see a Laser facility where they wanted $3000 for a lifetime plan only on my chin and jawline, I said No Thanks I will try Vaniqa. I got my Rx on 4/2/09 and haven’t tweezed since. It worked so fast for me. I did get a pimple on both sides of my jawline, which is rare for me, but I will continue using this for now. My two friends are now trying it.

Subj: Vaniqa while pregnant?
Date: 4/17/2009
I have had so many lazer treatments on my chin area, but the hair is still there every month I get lazzer the hair is gone but they come back. the problem is now I am pregnant and cannot get the treatments anymore, so can I use vaniqa through out my pregnancy, because I do not like the hair on my face.

Sofie

AskDocWeb: The instructions say that if you plan on becoming pregnant, talk with your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. It is unknown if this medicine is excreted in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are using this medicine, check with your doctor or pharmacist to discuss the risks to your baby.

Subj: Will hair grow back?
Date: 4/18/2009
Will my facial hair grow back even if I use Vaniqa continuously for 24 weeks?

Mariela

AskDocWeb: Vaniqa doesn’t stop hair growth permanently, it just inhibits an enzyme that causes hair growth. If you discontinue use then your hair growth returns to what it was before you started using it.

Subj: More cost efficient size?
Date: 4/19/2009
Is Vaniqa available in a larger, more cost efficient size?

D

AskDocWeb: Vaniqa is available in a 30 gram and a 60 gram tube.

Subj: Huge change within days
Date: 4/23/2009
I started using vaniqa a month ago. Literally saw a huge change within days. I had excessive hair growth previous to using it. I was tweezing 2-3 times a day…I had stubbles, it was horrible when I ran my hand under my chin. Vaniqa had just gone up when I purchaed it…at $130..but I did find a rebate form, just received a $60 check. I only fear getting off it.
