Subj: Worried about side effects
Date: 9/20/2008
Hi there, my doctor is putting me on xenical pill I am worried about the side effects. Because the looks I should take it, but I am very overweight, I rarely eat fat at all. What should I do?

Louise

AskDocWeb: The potential side effects are weighed against the good it will do you. If the good it will do you outweighs the possible side effects then this may be what you need. Follow your doctor’s instructions.

Subj: Contraceptive pills?
Date: 9/22/2008
Is it okey to take xenical even I’m taking levora (contraceptive pills?)

Rose

AskDocWeb: Xenical has no effect on effectiveness of contraceptive pills.

Subj: Feeling fabulous!
Date: 10/5/2008
Hi, I’ve found that I am losing weight just a week after taking Xenical – I was on it before and it worked quite well but then I was off it for a while and now am back ready to lose a lot of fat – I weigh 82kilos and am 1.68 tall but have rather a lot around my middle which I want to lose – I eat lots of low-fat food and salads and eat apples a lot and all-bran with dried fruits, but occasionally will have some camambert or paté at weekends or chicken which I remove the skin from!

I have had far fewer side-effects this time and am feeling fabulous and as I have a static bike and go to the gym to weight-lift twice a week am looking forward to seeing results – I can already see it on my middle part and my face!! (nice and slim and without any extra chins!! ha ha…It is a wonderful invention and I will keep on taking it as long as my purse (!!) allows me too – yesterday for the weekend I had some pasta but it didn’t have any adverse effects on me and if I forget to take a pill after fatty food it’s still working in my system funnily enough so I’m lucky as am saving a bit of money too that way…good luck to you all – I hardly have any side effects just a sudden urge to go to the loo occasionally but without the orange oil and bad smell…happy customer!

Subj: It works!
Date: 10/9/2008
I used xenical today and its my 1st day taling it, after 3 hours I go to the bathroom and loose the stools. It works! My concern is I will take it twice a day only because I eat meal twice, 1 in morning and 1 in afternoon before 6pm. Would it be alright? Or it lessen the possibility of loosing weight? Please let me know. Thanks,

Jing

AskDocWeb: That is part of the instructions that you need to get from your doctor along with advice about taking a vitamin supplement, diet, and exercise. Our purpose here is to share information about side effects.

Subj: Is it too early to say?
Date: 10/31/2008
Hi! It’s been 4 days now since I’ve started using xenical. However, I haven’t experienced any side effects so far. My stool patters are more or less the same. Is it too early to say? I do try and control my diet as much as I can. If I don’t take a meal that has fat content, I avoid taking the pill. As of now I haven’t started gymming or doing any other physical activity to quicken the process. Please could you advise if it’s too soon for me to think that it’s not working? Why does it take time? My heights is 5ft.3in and I weigh 86 kgs.

Riya

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t started the exercise part yet then yes, it is too soon to say if it is working or not. You need to realize that the pills are only part of the treatment. The lifestyle changes in diet and exercise are required in order to get your weight under control.

Subj: Question about losing weight
Date: 11/1/2008
I am starting on this product tomorrow and I was wondering if the studies done were with Xenical alone or Xenical with a 30% max fat diet? If I am on a reduced calorie diet should I expect the weight to come off at the same rate or faster than if I dieted alone because I can lose more than 10% in one year just by dieting alone. In fact, I could lose easily 20% by diet alone should I stick with it religiously for a year.

Jennifer

AskDocWeb: In general, the weight should come off faster because Xenical interferes with enzymes that digest fat. This allows about 30% of the fat eaten to pass through the body undigested.

Subj: A cautionary tale
Date: 11/2/2008
I have been taking xenical sporadically for 8 years, I try to eat healthily but when my social life requires inviting people out have tended to take xenical as a precaution. I have more or less kept the same weight although I am still very obese, 5′ 5″ and 120 kg. This summer I went to England for my annual holiday, I live in Egypt the rest of the year, and was taking 2 a day due to eating foods I am normally deprived of, e.g. bacon, fish and chips, pork etc. By the end of the 5 weeks, I could hardly walk 10 steps without becoming totally breathless but put it down to relaxation and inactivity, normally I am extremely active in spite of my size and go to Curves gym etc. Then my legs started to swell oh oh heart failure like my mother? Got back to Egypt and took myself in hand foodwise and exercise wise and stopped the xenical. Almost instant improvement but I still didn’t implicate the xenical until last week after a spate of outings involving eating out so I took 1 capsule with the meal each time. Back to square 1, struggling for breath, sighing, and swollen ankles again! Lokked up the blurb in the box where rarely SEVERE BREATHING PROBLEMS were reported as an allergic reaction and side effect, albeit rarely. That’s it! Have stopped completely for ever, feel much better, not so unwell and can cycle on my exercise bike in front of the TV. The moral is: don’t take for a long time: don’t use as an excuse to overeat: and there is no such thing as a free lunch, literally and metaphorically. I am also over 60 so shouldn’t be messing about with my health. A cautionary tale and good luck to all of us struggling with weight problems with xenical or without. Lots of love from Egypt xx

Subj: Good results
Date: 11/10/2008
I think xenical is really good. I have lost nearly 5 stone (71 pounds or 32kg) since March taking xenical along with a healthy low fat diet and have had no side effects. I have had problems with my gall bladder but may have had this without xenical. I only take 1 a day.

Subj: Accident

What happens if a 5 year old takes an adult dosage of xenical by accident what should I do.

Joshua
AskDocWeb: Call your local poison control center or ER.

Subj: Muscle tremors or spasms
Date: 11/21/2008
Hi, I have been taking Xenical for about a month. I have been slowly dropping weight. About two kilos. The side effects were fairly typical at first – loose bowel movements, nausea, but I could easily cope with that. Now I am worried. A new symptom has appeared. I am having small muscle trmors around my anus that feel as if I am sitting on a vibrating machine. They were sporadic two days ago, now its every minute or so. I am no currently taking any other meds so it’s not an interaction. Have recently (two weeks ago)come off deptran and antihistamines for an auto immune condition, which is now in remission. So, the muscle tremors – is this normal? I haven’t seen any other comments about it. It’s very disconcerting as my grandmother had cancer of the vulva. ew!

Dawn

AskDocWeb: To date the only muscle tremors or spasms reported have been abdominal. Please report this side effect to your doctor.

Subj: Phytoshape
Date: 11/28/2008
I’ve been taking phytoshape for the last 3 weeks, now I’m pregnant and as soon as I knew I stopped taking it, how might it effect my pregnancy and my baby’s development?

Sara

AskDocWeb: Phytoshape is one of the products listed by the FDA that contains Sibutramine, a Schedule IV controlled substance and the active ingredient in Meridia, an approved prescription drug to treat obesity. The problem is that Phytoshape may contain more than 3 times the recommended daily dosage. Such higher dosages may cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), palpitations, and seizures. The use of weight-loss medications during pregnancy is not recommended because they may interfere with adequate nutrition for both the woman and the developing fetus.

Subj: Scaly skin problems
Date: 11/29/2008
I have been taking the xenical for a little over a month now and I have noticed some weight loss, but not a whole lot. I also have noticed some scaly skin problems. Is this common? My skin is a lot more dry than usual and even a little itchy. I guess this could also be because it is turning winter and I have gas heat, but it has never gotten this bad before in the past.

Erin

AskDocWeb: Dry skin is not common but it is listed as one of the side effects of Xenical. Other less common side effects includes ear/nose/throat problems and joint disorders.

Subj: Vomiting and diarrhea
Date: 12/1/2008
I have been on xenical for 2 weeks now. Suddenly I have gastric flu like symptoms of vomiting and diarrea for 2 days and can keep very little down. Could this be a side effect from xenical? I have not been able to take it for the 2 days now.

Peggy

AskDocWeb: Yes, both vomiting and diarrhea are side effects of Xenical. Diarrhea is likely to happen whenever the amount of fat in your meal is more than 30%.

Subj: Beer?
Date: 12/4/2008
Will zenical work if you drink beer everyday as my hubby does???

Fatty

AskDocWeb: Yes, alcohol has no affect on the effectiveness of Xenical.

Subj: Oily orange discharges
Date: 12/18/2008
I have been taking Xenical for two weeks. I have been having oily orange droplets with my bowel movements. Now I am having oily orange discharges when walking around or just sitting. Is this something to be concerned about?

Jean

AskDocWeb: Only as a sign that you are eating too much fat in your diet, the more fat you eat the more this will happen.

Subj: Gall bladder was removed
Date: 12/19/2008
You mentioned about gallblader problems before taking xenical? Well I was just wondering how about me, my gallblader was removed in July, 2008…can I still take xenical?

Rey

AskDocWeb: It is important to tell your doctor about any gall bladder problems because of the potential for Xenical to aggravate existing gall bladder problems. It may still be possible to take Xenical as long as your doctor knows about the gallbladder surgery.

Subj: Very helpful
Date: 12/23/2008
Xenical is a very helpful product. It was able to help me jump start my weight loss process. Together with eliminating junk food, and eating more fruits and vegetables, I was able to lose 15 lbs in 2 months. It has also taught me to change my eating habits.
