Subj: No side affects at all
I have only been taking xenical for a couple of days but as yet I have not any side affect at all, i.e. oily stools, wind etc. Does this mean they are not working for me? And how long before I see results? Thank you,
AskDocWeb: Many people don’t get side effects and of those that do, the side effects usually disappear if you continue treatment and keep to your recommended diet. You may start noticing weight loss within days.
Subj: Gained them back
I have been using xenical and I have in the 1st month lost 6-pounds and the second month gained them back. What can that be due to as I am following the diet given by the doctor and I exercise 3 times a week as-well???
AskDocWeb: It sounds like something in your weight loss program needs to be adjusted but to find out what that is, you will have to talk to your doctor. When the number of calories you eat is greater than the number of calories you burn through activity your body gains weight. You may not like the idea of counting calories but it may be necessary in order to get control of your weight.
Subj: Long term use of Xenical?
I have been taking Xenical for about 4 years. I am a male and weighed about 335 lbs when I started. I now weigh about 190 lbs. I have developed the following condition. A severe burning about 2 hours after dinner right below my breast bone in the center. At first I thought it was heartburn, but no antacids or drugs like pepsid helps. I think it may be my Gallbladder. The pain is extreme. I stopped taking Xenical and the pain seems to have subsided but left me with a dull continuos pain on the left side right under my ribs. I have been tryng to see a doctor but all are backed up for weeks. What do you recommend I do? Was this caused by the long term use of Xenical?
AskDocWeb: Gall bladder problems are not listed as a side effect of Xenical. The cause of gallbladder problems is still unknown and unfortunately there is no way to prevent it. Two of the risk factors for developing gallbladder problems are obesity and rapid weight loss, both of which may apply to you. Besides going to an emergency room, there is not much you can do but wait for your doctor’s appointment.
Subj: Gallbladder removed
If I had my gallbladder removed 15 years ago, is it ok to take xenical?
AskDocWeb: We found no problems noted in our reference texts but as to it being safe for you, that’s up to your doctor.
Subj: Terrible hip pains
The Doctor put me on Xenical because I had gained a lot of weight as a result of an ongoing sacro-iliac injury which affects my ability to exercise and diets weren’t working. A month later, I have lost a stone! I am usually constipated and bloated so a slightly higher fat intake on these occasions help. The worrying thing is that over the last weekend I have been waking with terrible hip pains making it hard for me to walk, particularly upstairs. With such a sudden onset, could it be due to xenical? I usually take aspirin at night to alleviate the injury swelling, could it be contra-indicated?
AskDocWeb: Xenical may aggravate your hip condition. Joint disorders are listed as one of the less common possible side effects. Please check with your health care provider to find out if it may be contra-indicated.
Subj: People with porphyria
I have generis pophyria and have been using Xenical for about two weeks. I have developed the blister-like porphyria skin reaction on my hands as well as under my armpits, it really burns, over the last week. I am totally convinced that this reaction comes from Xenical and that people with pophyria should not be having these tablets. Could you please investigate the ingredients in Xenical as well as check up on the allegies in porphyria. I have not had these symtoms for years. Please reply,
AskDocWeb: According to the American Porphyria Foundation, there are 8 known types of porphyria. Some are aquired genetically and others are acquired because of a trigger and could happen to anybody (like a medicine, poison, pophyric foods, illness, infection, sunlight, estrogen, menopause, leaving puberty into adulthood, stress, fasting, etc.). It is possible that the stress involved with the attempt to lose weight may bring on an attack.
You are right is being suspicious of the drug because drugs are the most common factor in causing an acute attack of porphyria. It is essential that people with acute porphyria avoid taking any drug that may induce an acute attack. Those who have porphyria cutanea tarda or erythropoietic protoporphyria need not worry because drugs do not aggravate those conditions. Here is a list of drugs that are regarded as UNSAFE for those with acute porphyria.
- Ergot derivatives
- Ketoconazole systemic
- Nalidixic acid
You will notice that Xenical is not on that list. That doesn’t exclude the possibility that Xenical may be a factor in your case. It just means that it has not been officially recognized as a problem.
Subj: Bowel problem
Me and my mum have a question, my mum just had bowel problem called dieftiqlitus can she take xenical?
AskDocWeb: Some bowel difficulties may rule out the use of Xenical but she will have to consult with to doctor to find out if she can us it or not.
Subj: Lump under armpit
Only been taking xenical for a day but noticed a lump under my arm near my armpit. I squeezed it and fat came out along with blood. This may just be coincidence but was wondering if you had an answer for me. Thanks,
AskDocWeb: That is not listed as a side effect of Xenical so it is likely an unrelated problem. Please check with your health care provider to find out about this infection.
Subj: I don’t seem to be losing weight
I have been given xenical orlistat by my GP, I have also started a diet class, healthy eating & lots of exercise. Before I never exercised and ate takeaways, I don’t seem to be losing weight and when I normally start a diet I have a big weight loss first week. I am also on tramadol, amitryptline, Fluoxetine & maxmelt wafers, could any of these be stopping my weight loss? Its really down hearting when u know how strict u have been but the scales do no justice.
AskDocWeb: Amitryptline seems to stimulate the appetite. Unfortunately, many antidepressants list weight gain as a possible side effect and this is one of them.
Subj: Recommended fat?
I have just started today with xenical. How long do they take to work and how much fat is reccomended to avoid the side affects?
AskDocWeb: Xenical starts working on the next meal you eat after taking it. Most of the side effects can be avoided if you keep to your recommended diet of meals containing no more than 30% fat.
Subj: Really tired and have back pain
I have just started to take xenical I’m on my first week, and cant stop going the loo, I’m really hoping this works I have tryed so many diets in the past but nothing ever worked for me I have tryed for years to lose weight, the only side affect I have had is I’m really tired and have had a bit of back pain, is that normal?
AskDocWeb: Yes, fatigue and back pain are listed as possible side effects of Xenical.
Subj: This is the best
I have used Xenical for 2 months and lopst 10pounds, no side effects this is the best tablet ever.
Subj: No bowel movement
Hi this is my 3rd day on Xenical and I have not experienced any bowel movement, is this normal? I really need to go but can’t…!
AskDocWeb: No that is not normal or common. Constipation is not listed as a side effect of Xenical. If this is your third day without a bowel movement then check with your doctor.
I have been taking xenical for two years and now have tendonitus and problems with a knee replacement hurts when I stand up.
I have been using Xenical for 3 days and instead of all the side-effects mentioned, I am actually constipated! Does this mean that the product is not working on me?
AskDocWeb: Since constipation is not listed as a side effect you should check with your health care provider.
Subj: Real Xenical?
How the correct and origin product of Xenical can be recognized? I want to avoid fake and imitation products thanks for your information…
AskDocWeb: The blue capsules have the words Xenical and ROCHE printed on them along with the number 120 which is the dosage in milligrams. If you buy Xenical from your local pharmacist you can be sure that you are getting the real thing.
Subj: Doctor recommended Xenical
Myself and my husband have tried to lose weight for the past 10 years, we start diets, but never see them through. So, last week we decided to talk to our Doctor about xenical. She recommended that we use Xenical, yet we’re afraid to try them, so today is the day we’re going to start them. So wish us luck!!!
AskDocWeb: We do wish you good luck. It may be helpful to remember that those who have had the most success in losing weight, and keeping it off, typically use a combined approach. They make changes in what they eat, the amount they eat, and the amount of exercise or physical activity that they get. Just approaching this from a team attitude increases your chances of success. If you and your husband decide that this is something you are going to do together then you can each encourage the other and help keep yourselves motivated. One way to do this is to go for a daily walk together. Each day pick a different direction and find out how far you get in 15 minutes. And of course you have to walk back so that counts as a half-hour of exercise. The talking you do while walking is also great for your relationship.
Subj: Gall bladder removed
I too had my gall bladder removed about 4months of taking Xenical. I never put the two together until I went to the store to look at ALLI. It clearly states do not take if you have had problems with your gall bladder or pancreatitis. That cannot be a coincidence as far as I am concerned. What do you recommend as far as getting more information on this issue?
AskDocWeb: You could talk to your doctor but it sounds like you are getting distracted from your goal of losing weight. Ask yourself what you would benefit from the most, paying attention to what doesn’t work or pay attention to what does work for you. The list of things that don’t work for weight loss is almost endless and if your doctor puts a drug on that list for you then it is a distraction to consider it further.
