AskDocWeb: Those who lose weight very fast are often surprised at how fast it comes back. The more gradual the weight loss the more likely you are to keep it off.

AskDocWeb: You may find it helpful to know that headaches are often caused by not drinking enough water, which may also contribute to irritable feelings and impaired concentration.

Subj: Grapefruit?
Date: 3/28/2010
Is it cool to eat grapefruit while on xenical? And will one pill a day be effective?

Brenda
AskDocWeb: In order to get the best results, always follow your doctor’s instructions about how many and when to take your medication. Grapefruit juice interacts with many prescription drugs, which can cause potentially serious side effects or make some lifesaving drugs less effective but Xenical doesn’t appear to be one of them. You can always check with your pharmacist or the “drug-food interaction” section of the label. Unfortunately many people overlook or just don’t read those package inserts.

Here are some of the drugs that interact with grapefruit juice.

  • Allergies: Allegra
  • Anxiety: Buspar, Halcion, Versed, Xanax
  • Asthma/Emphysema: Theophylline
  • Cancer: Cyclophosphamide, etoposide, ifosfamide, tamoxifen, vinblastine, vincristine
  • Cough: Dextromethorphan (found in many over-the-counter cold medicines)
  • Depression: Luvox, Zoloft
  • Epilepsy: Tegretol
  • Erectile dysfunction: Cialis, Viagra
  • Heart, Abnormal rhythm: Cordarone, quinidine
  • Heart disease/High blood pressure: Adalat, Calan, Cardene, Cardizem, Coreg, Covera, Nimotop, Plendil, Procardia, Sular, Verelan
  • Heart disease/stroke/blood clots: Coumadin
  • High cholesterol: Lescol, Lipitor, Mevacor, Zocor
  • HIV: Agenerase, Crixivan, Fortovase, Norvir, Viracept
  • Infection: Biaxin, erythromycin, Sporanox, troleandomycin
  • Pain: Actiq, Alfenta, Duragesic, Sufenta
  • Prostate enlargement: Proscar

Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re concerned about any of your medications.

Note: The medical effect of grapefruit is not all bad. There is new evidence that supports the use of grapefruit in the fight against hepatitis C. This is exciting because it may lead to viral elimination and it can be done with an all-natural, well-known food source. Researchers lead by Yaakov Nahmias, Ph.D at the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Engineering in Medicine identified the role grapefruit may have in hindering the propagation of hepatitis C.

Research has shown that the hepatitis C virus binds to a very low-density lipoprotein (vLDL, also known as bad cholesterol) before it is secreted from liver cells to re-infect additional liver cells. This serves as a key pathway in the viral lifecycle. Since the hepatitis C virus does not integrate its genetic material into the DNA of infected cells, it is possible to totally clear the virus if new cells were not being infected. By blocking vLDL with a compound in grapefruit, hepatitis C loses its vehicle and is stopped from expansion. Interfering with the transport of the hepatitis C virus out of cells holds a great deal of therapeutic promise.

Grapefruit’s bitter taste is caused by the presence of the flavanoid naringin, which is metabolized into naringenin, an antioxidant known to reduce the secretion of vLDL from liver cells. Researchers also found that naringenin reduces the secretion of Hepatitis C from infected cells. Phytonutrients in grapefruit, called limonoids, inhibit tumor formation by promoting the formation of glutathione-S-transferase, a detoxifying enzyme. This enzyme sparks a reaction in the liver that helps to make toxic compounds more water soluble for excretion from the body. By helping the liver clear out cancer-causing toxins, limonoids’ promotion of detoxification enzymes is a simple way to ward off the development of cancer.

Subj: Leaky stools and oily stools
Date: 4/20/2010
I have been taking for almost two weeks, but lost ony 1 lb, and got also the side effect: leaky stools of oily stools… I don’t know if it is working for me the weight lost, I have not seen any improvements, please advise, I have been doing my diet, walk…

Sef

AskDocWeb: When taking Xenical, the leaky oily stools are the result of eating foods that have too much fat in them. The more fat in the foods the more problems with oily stools. A successful weight loss program with Xenical has two other parts in addition to the drug. The first is to make changes in eating habits, which includes the choice of foods as well as the portion size. The third part is an increase in physical activity.

Subj: Need to lose 3 stones
Date: 5/2/2010
Hi, I used xenical for one month now and i havn’t noticed any weight loss yet. I need to lose about 3 stones buy mid July do you think that would be acheivabale?

Hannah

AskDocWeb: Let’s see, 3 stones is about 42 pounds or 19 kilograms. If you follow your doctor’s instructions about making some changes in your lifestyle and activity level then yes, it is achievable because others have done it. This would be a good time to learn something new like dancing, bowling, swimming, or take up hiking to burn off some extra weight.

Subj: Strange taste in my mouth
Date: 5/5/2010
Hi I have been using xenical for about 2 months now. I have lost weight, but also use the gym 3 times a week, I noticed that I have a strange taste in my mouth, this has only occurred since taking this medication, plus my breath seems 2 smell as well, I have read a few ppl have had the same tastes in there mouths.

Jo

AskDocWeb: It is not listed as one of the side effects of Xenical but it is possible. There are many drugs that affect the sense of taste.

Subj: Xenical is worth it
Date: 5/7/2010
Thank goodness for Xenical! I lost 60 lbs in 7 months. I can’t say enough about it. Yes, there are side effects but if you keep your fat intake to 30% or less they are minimal. It’s a price I will gladly pay for my weight loss. Now if I could just get Pharmacare to cover it I’ll save $144 a month. But that too is a price I will pay for my weight loss.

Subj: Side effects are awful
Date: 5/8/2010
I took xenical for two weeks, and have been off of them for one because i have severe pain in the lower part of my back, i took them a yr ago, and had a simular reaction, and ended up in hospital. can you help as i want to take them, but the side effects are awful.

Paula

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have lost site of your original goal. When you put more emphasis on the drug than you do on your goal, it can make your doctor suspicious because insisting on a specific drug is one of the signs of drug abuse. Why not let your doctor choose the drug that would be most appropriate for your situation?

Subj: Orange oily stain
Date: 5/13/2010
i am on a low calorie diet for about 7 month and i lost 20 ib Iam now 132ib & 5’4 height. i took xenical only one pill per week in my open free meal and every time after taking the pill by 2 days i experience an orange oily stain in my stool which anoys me so much. What can i do to stop it?

AskDocWeb: The orange oily stain is a common complaint that results from eating too much fat in your meals. Reduce the amount of fat you eat and the orange oily discharge and stains will stop.

Subj: Taking xenical while pregnant?
Date: 5/20/2010
I was not aware that I am pregnant and have been taking xenical for the past 4 months, what can happen to my baby, are there side effects?

Kedibone

AskDocWeb: The FDA put Xenical in the pregnancy category B, which means it is not expected to harm an unborn baby. However, the manufacturer’s website does not recommend taking it when pregnant. There is a concern about Xenical blocking the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Although no one has reported any problems you may want to check to your doctor to be sure.

Subj: Sedation while on Xenical
Date: 5/22/2010
I visited the doctors recently and due to a weight problem we agreed for me to go on Xenicial. But I am having a lot of denial work being done and due to a phobia and becoming very anxious my dentist sedates me. I haven’t started the Xenicial yet, but want to start ASAP, and am not sure can sedation be done if I’m on Xenical.

L
