Subj: Xenical
Date: 9/10/2005
Hello, I am 5 foot 4″ and 162lbs (that means BMI 30,4 as I understand it). I’m 28 and have no medical condition. I want to lose weight so that in about 1 year we’ll start a family. If I use xenical for 3-6 months after how long is it ok to get pregnant? How long do I have to be off it and how certain is this? Please tell me as I’m not sure the doctors here in Greece will know…
Lydia
AskDocWeb: Your doctors there should know. You should wait 3 months just to be sure your baby will be okay and not take any chances. After discontinuing, make a habit to walk 30 minutes every day and eat light meals, but three meals a day, and take vitamins during those three months.
Subj: Xenical side effects
Date: 9/12/2005
I just started xenical and was wondering if you didn’t experience any side effects does it mean its still working?
Tina
AskDocWeb: Yes, not everyone has side effects.
Subj: Xenical and gallbladder
Date: 9/27/2005
I had my gallbladder removed in 2003. Is it safe for me to take Xenical. I have been off and on it for two years.
Jonie
AskDocWeb: If your doctor knows about your gallbladder removal along with the rest of your medical history and still prescribes Xenical, then you should be safe.
Subj: Oily stools
Date: 10/11/2005
I have been on Xenical for 2 days now, I haven’t lost any weight but people say that you loose one pound a day, is this true? If you are not obese and taking them will you loose more weight or will it not affect your body weight? Also I have some side affects (oily stools) how long will these last for? Will they decrease? Or continue while I am still on Xenical? Please help!
Chloe
AskDocWeb:If you take Xenical when you are not obese you are just causing yourself problems. The oily stools can last as long as you take Xenical.
Subj: Xenical stopped working
Date: 10/11/2005
I have been taking Xenical for almost 3 years now. To date it has helped me loose nearly 60 lbs but recently it has seems to have stopped working and while I was on it I GAINED 10 lbs! Most info on Xenical says it “can work up to 2 years.” Is this because it has been shown to wear off or just because they don’t have enough info on its’ long term effects? And why does it seem to stop working? I thought that since it bonds to the fat in the food that the body wouldn’t adjust to the drug. I am curious b/c this drug has been so great for me in the past and it is without the awful side-affects that drugs like Didrex and Phentermine have on the brain.
Kirsten
AskDocWeb:In some cases, the body builds up a tolerance for it and it stops working. Taking a break from use (for a few weeks or months) will sometimes make it start working again.
Subj: Staggering weightloss
Date: 10/12/2005
I have been using Xenical since January 2005 and have gone from 126.6kg to currently 92kg. I staggering loss of 34kg (75 pounds!) in 9 months. I eat well and exercise by walking mainly and my whole life has changed. I have gone from a size 26 to 16 and am still losing weight. I hope to get down to 70kg in the next year. Side effects I have suffered from are oily stools.
Eve
AskDocWeb:We congratulate you on your hard work and accomplishment, well done!
Subj: What am I doing wrong?
Date: 10/19/2004
I have been taking Xenical for about 3 weeks. At first I lost 1lb then gained it back. I am having the oily stools as stated with too much fat. I do not have a Gallbladder. Can this affect the medicine?
Karen
AskDocWeb: There is a relationship between taking Xenical and the formation of gallstones but you need not worry about that. It sounds like you need to reduce the amount of fat in your diet. Or talk to your doctor about something that may work better for you than Xenical.
Subj: Mixing weightloss products
Date: 11/28/2005
I heard through the grapevine that you may be able to take xenical with phentermine or adipex-p and loose weight even better because adipex-p is a appetite suppressant, and xenical inhibits fat absorption…is this true?
Bonnie
AskDocWeb: Only if you want to cause yourself problems. You may get the nasty side effects of both. And consider buying lots of extra underwear, you might need it.
Subj: Xenical prescription
Date: 12/13/2005
Hi, I am starting using Xenical, is it a must to take it three times every day? or I just take it when eating a greasy meal?
Vita
AskDocWeb: Take it as prescribed by your physician, that means follow the directions. If you just take it when you eat greasy foods, it will not work as intended.
Subj: Xenical stomach ache
Date: 12/13/2005
Is one of the side affects for Xenical a stomach ache every time I eat and take my pill I get a stomach ache for hours and I’m drinking water and eating low fat food. Please let me know.
TU
AskDocWeb: Abdominal pain is reported in about three percent of patients but it could also be irritating your colon. Your stomachache should be discussed with your physician.
Subj: No weight loss yet
Date: 12/22/2005
I have been taking xenical for almost three weeks. No weight loss as of yet, I am however retaining fluid and can feel it in my face and feet. I also get back pain and had a little difficulty sleeping but I don’t think it was related to the xenical. I am sure the fluid retention is due to the xenical because it wasn’t a problem before. I am going to give it a few more weeks to see if I lose weight.

Subj: Gastric bypass surgery
Date: 1/27/2006
I had gastric bypass surgery over 2 years ago. I reached my goal weight and now wear a size 4. Last week I started to gain weight, 4 lbs in a week, I still eat small meals, low fat, high protein, drink water only and take several vitamins a day. This scared me to death. I got the big idea to take some Xenical to lose back to my goal. I experienced major pains going from my stomach to my back, almost unbearable. Is this medication safe for Rou-N-Y Gastric Bypass Patients who wish to lose just a few lbs?
AskDocWeb: If you only want to lose a few pounds then Xenical is not for you. Adding some additional physical activity (fun stuff like dancing, walking, bowling, etc.) would be much healthier.
Subj: Xenical over 8 months
Date: 1/30/2006
I’ve been using xenical for 8 months now and have only lost 10lbs, last week I weighed myself and I’d lost a further 7lbs, but now this week the 7lbs is back on again. I haven’t been eating anything unusual just the same as always, I’m also very constipated for the last week so I know I’m not eating too much fat in my diet. If I cut back any more food I’ll starve. I’m also taking fluid tablets so I know it’s not fluid coming up the time of the month! Any suggestions?
Therese
AskDocWeb: It sounds like this drug may not be the best choice for you. We suggest you talk this over with your doctor and find out what alternatives are available.
Subj: Xenical fat blocker
Date: 2/14/2005
I have just started taking xenical. I don’t eat a lot of fats so I haven’t had any of the greasy stool side effects yet. I also haven’t had any bowel movements and I am wondering if it can cause constipation. I just started taking it 2 days ago. I wonder if it will really benefit me if I already eat less that 30% in fat. Does (it) inhibit all fat absorption or just anything over 30%?
JC
AskDocWeb: Yes, the percentage of anything over 30%. Anything over that and you may have a hard time keeping your underwear clean.
Subj: Xenical side effects
Date: 2/17/2006
I have just started Xenical. It gives me headache and abdominal pain. I cannot sleep too.
Janet
Subj: Xenical trouble sleeping
Date: 2/22/2006
I have been taking xenical for about a week and I am having alot of trouble sleeping. This is after taking a sleep aid. Will this side effect of taking Xenical go away or is there anything I can do to sleep better? Sleep has always been a problem for me and now it’s really bad. When I go to bed I feel like I need to get back up or like I have drank a large amount of coffee. Any ideas?
Christine
AskDocWeb: After a couple of weeks these symptoms should go away. Your body is getting adjusted to taking the pill. You might try taking them earlier in the day.
Subj: Depression
Date: 2/26/2006
My sister made a purchase of Zenical and has been using for approx 3 weeks. No history of mental health issues but depression has taken hold and came on very suddenly. She is now medicated and is being monitored. Could there be a link with her depression and the Zenical? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Jodie
AskDocWeb: Others have reported the same symptom, but it isn’t officially listed as a side effect.
Subj: Xenical and constipation
Date: 2/28/2006
I have been taking xenical for about a week and a half and was warned of the side effects….oily stools and gassy discharge. I have to say that since taking this medication I have had problems with constipation, could this be possible?
Tammie
AskDocWeb: Constipation isn’t listed as a side effect with this medication but then some people do react differently. Like Benadryl, some become sleepy and others become wired.
Subj: Xenical experience
Date: 3/4/2006
I don’t recommend this drug to anyone. I was on it for 1 year and lost 10kg. Along with the weight loss I experienced some of the minor side effects.
After stopping the drugs and continuing to eat the way I was eating and exercising taking the drugs I put back on the weight I lost in a matter of 4 months and also gained a bit more than before. I was clinically depressed.
In the long term I don’t recommend this. A healthy diet with fresh fruit and vegetables along with a regular exercise program. After the 4 months post taking Xenical I have been eating healthy fresh food working with a nutritionist and I have taken up swimming and yoga. I am gradually losing the weight I lost and aiming to lose more the natural way. I’m feeling young and happy again. I know that in the long run it is more sustainable to have a gradual loss in weight and do something which is not simply a fad diet but part of my lifestyle which I will change and adapt as time goes on. I’m glad to have discovered this and it’s free!
Jerry
AskDocWeb: Congratulations and keep up the good work.
Subj: Stools
Date: 3/8/2006
I have been taking xenical for over a year. And lost some weight. I found for eight months that my stools were oily, and even though I eat a lot of fatty foods and still take xenical, my stools are no longer oily, why is this?
Shirley
