Subj: Help with constipation
Date: 12/23/2006
Been using Xenical for about a month now. I don’t mind the oily stools. The advantages for me outweigh the discomfort. I took psyllium fiber before taking Xenical. It helped me with my constipation. Can I continue to take my psyllium fiber even when taking Xenical?

Marin

AskDocWeb: In most cases adding fiber to your diet is a good idea but you might want to consult with your doctor to be sure.

Subj: Long term use of Xenical
Date: 1/5/2007
My husband has been using Xenical for about 4 – 5 years now. Is it wise to use it for that long a period and would it have the opposite effect?

Le Roux

AskDocWeb: The problem with using it long-term is that the body tends to build up a tolerance for the drug and it stops working. The safety and effectiveness of using Xenical beyond two years has not been established. Hopefully you are taking a multivitamin supplement that contains fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutrition. The supplement should be taken once a day at least 2 hours before or after taking Xenical, such as at bedtime.

Subj: Very Annoyed
Date: 1/11/2007
I used Xenical over 2 years ago, for a period of 3months. Taking only 1 per day with my evening meal. I broke out in a rash which started on my face. I discontinued using Xenical. I am still 2 years on suffering from a rash which moves around my body on a regular basis. Some nights I find it impossible to sleep due to the itchiness. My legs, ankles and feet are always swollen now and I am retaining fluid. I know this was all brought on by using Xenical. What I want to know is how do I get rid of this continuous rash???? I have been to several DR’s, Homopathies, Allergists, hospitals, dermatologists with no answers. How do I reverse the damage that has been done to my body. I have always been a very healthy person and wished the hell I had never heard of Xenical. I have been prescribed cortisone and steroids which is the only medication that can keep the rash at bay, however these drugs are not good for you. I do not want to have to continue using them. How do I reverse the damage? Very Annoyed.

AskDocWeb: We suggest you see an infectious disease doctor. They specialize in your type of symptoms that are not helped by others. Call your internal medicine doctor to get the name of a doctor for infectious disease in your area.

Subj: Weight loss
Date: 1/15/2007
I’ve been taking Xenical for 6 months but have combined it with a significant programme of exercise. I have lost 5lbs in that time, eating normally. I’m not massively overweight but I have had a very stubborn last 10lbs to loose – I lost 4.5 stone previously and then stuck for 8 years.

Subj: Xenical didn’t work
Date: 1/24/2007
I didn’t loose any weight at all. I got a gall bladder infection and it had to be removed I don’t no if xenical could have caused this but I no that it didn’t work for me. 🙁

Subj: Lost fat around arms
Date: 1/30/2007
I have been using Xenical for over a month and it appears that I lost fat around my arms but I think it is slow. I guess by eating the right kind of food will be beneficial for this medicine.

Indigotricia

AskDocWeb: And lifting 5 pound weights would help those arms too.

Subj: Xenical and gallbladder
Date: 1/30/2007
Hi, I have had my gallbladder removed, can I take xenical safely without any problems?

Roberta

AskDocWeb: We found no problems noted in our reference texts but as to it being safe for you, that’s up to your doctor.

Subj: Stopping Xenical temporarily
Date: 2/10/2007
How long does Xenical work after you stop taking it? I’m going to be going on vacation soon so would like to stop it temporarily to avoid side effects (will have less control over my diet away from home). I don’t get any significant side effects at the moment but I’m on a low fat diet to avoid them – less than 5% fat per meal. I know that this eating regime will slip whilst I’m on vacation so would prefer to put a few pounds on rather than have the side effects…

Alan

AskDocWeb: It won’t stay in your system very long after quitting, 24 hours should do it.

Subj: Oily stools
Date: 2/14/2007
I just started taking Xenical today, and I feel no side effects. I don’t have to urge to use the restroom, and I’m not sure when I’m supposed to start getting the oily stools. If I don’t have them does this mean it’s not working?

Kgosney

AskDocWeb: No, you only get the oily stools if you eat too much fat. Eighty percent of Xenical users never get them.

Subj: BMI 49
Date: 2/19/2007
Hi, I have just started taking Xenical. My Dr is worried about my BMI, which is 49. The rest of my health is normal according to my blood results. I will let you know how I am getting on in the near future but like many of your other people that have left comments I really think this is my last result in losing my weight and is the turning point for me in my life.

Subj: Orange color in the BM
Date: 2/20/2007
I have been taking Xenical for 5 full days now. I am 38 years old, my weight was 161 lbs. and I am 5’4″. I have lost 4 pounds and hope it continues. My question is in regards to diet: I consistently have a diet of 50% carb 30% fat and 20% protein, also I keep my calories at no more than 1100-1400cals a day and I burn 500 calories a day on the treadmill (78 minutes). My carbs come from whole grains and mostly fruit. I use to be a low carber and am wondering if to many carbs will slow down the weight loss process? I guess I need some validation, my doctor prescribed the drug to me no problem, but really provided me with very little counseling. As for side affects, I have been having very minor to no side effects. I made home made pizza last night with whole-wheat dough, no cheese, and am having some orange color in the BM. I don’t know…is what I am doing and experiencing normal and correct?

Theresa

AskDocWeb: Yes, this is normal and no cause for concern. Remember that farmer feed more grain to their livestock when they want to fatten them up. If you want to lose weight consider cutting down on the grains.

Subj: Xinical
Date: 2/21/2007
I am 48 and my bmi is 35, I know that Xinical blocks fat from entering the system, but my question is what happens to the fat that is there now causing the overweight, a doctor did recommend this pill to me once before, but I was turned off with the greasy stool that seem to come at will. I do now understand that this can be controlled by less fat intake. I do suffer with slight high blood pressure and would like to start Xinical now. Height 5.4 weight 203lbs, how long do you recommend I should take this medication.

Cbmf

AskDocWeb: How long you should take any prescription drug is a question best answered by your doctor. And since you have hypertension, I suggest you use it only under the strict guidance of your doctor.

Subj: Foods to eat and what to stay away from
Date: 2/21/2007
I have been taking Xenical now for 6 days and have lost an amazing 5 lbs.! I have gotten a few stomach cramps and hot flashes, is this normal? Also, will you only continue to see results by taking 3 pills per day or could you take 2 per day? Also, my doctor was very vague on what foods to eat and what to stay away from…any advice? Thanks!

Kris

AskDocWeb: Yes, your symptoms sound normal. It has almost become a bad joke but you will know if you eat too much fat by the stains in your underwear. You should avoid the fatty foods like french fries, hamburgers, most fast foods, and no pasta. Eat lots of vegetables, salads and fruits, etc.

Subj: Menstruation problems
Date: 2/22/2007
I noticed that one of the side effects of Xenical listed menstruation problems. Where can I get a more detailed explanation of this? I started Zenical a little over a week ago, at the same time my period started. Normally I would menstruate for 3 days, but this has lasted for over a week. Not normal for me.

Judy

AskDocWeb: About 10% of Xenical users experience menstrual irregularity. See your doctor if you experience any of the following:

  • If you have Severe cramps that are not relieved by ibuprofen or aspirin
  • If your periods are accompanied by fever
  • If your periods are off by more than a week
  • If you bleed heavily
  • If you bleed for more than 10 days
  • If you bleed in between periods
  • If you bleed after intercourse

Subj: Think twice before eating a high fat meal
Date: 2/22/2007
I’ve only been taking Zenical for a few weeks. I have noted a small decrease in my weight (about 3 pounds) but I am still struggling to eat properly. I did eat a high fat meal a couple of nights ago, and I’m sorry to say, I’m still experiencing side effects. I have chronic indigestion and my appetite has also decreased. I have a bloated stomach. My daily BM is no longer. Also, I can only eat about 1/4 of what I normally eat at each meal otherwise, I’m throwing up. I do feel this is temporary, however, at least I hope so. I will, as has already been said, think “twice” before eating another high fat meal. Given my good result in such a short period of time, I am reasonably sure in the long term, I will benefit from taking this medication.

Subj: What medicine to take
Date: 3/5/2007
Can I take xenical orlistat even if I have hypothyroidism? I’m 25 years. 5’6″ and have been overweight ever since I gave birth. My current weight is 200lbs. Can you please help me decide what medicine to take. I have been taking levothyroxine as well and want to try xenical to lose weight. thanks.

April

AskDocWeb: Deciding what medicine to take for weight loss is a complicated process involving your complete health history and current condition, allergies, etc. all of which is best left to your personal health care provider. Please consult with her or him before you make any decision about Xenical. If your doctor prescribes Xenical then come back and let others know about the side effects.
