Subj: Zoloft in children?
Date: 11/1/2007
I am trying to find out information from families that have given their children zoloft. My grandson is 6 and his psychiatrist (whom has only seen once for approx. one and one-half hours) has recommended this and I am very concerned about the possible effects. If I am reading the information right it is only approved for children 6 years old that have bipolar disorder. My grandson is definitely not bipolar. Thank you in advance for any information you can send me.

AskDocWeb: Zoloft may be prescribed for pediatric ages 6 and up in the treatment of major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Adverse reactions in pediatric patients using Zoloft were similar to those found with adult usage.
Subj: Crippling symptoms
Date: 11/2/2007
I lost my father a few years ago and it threw me into depression. I take a holistic approach whenever possible so I started taking St. John’s Wort standardized to .3 Hypercin and felt amazingly well. Problem is, I am a very active out door person in Houston and it made me so sensitive to the sun that I had to give up many out door activities. I stopped and asked my Dr. for another solution, he prescribed Zoloft 50 and took it up to 100. I only intended to take it for a short while but stayed on it for 3 years. A week ago I decided to give it another try without the meds and quit taking it. I have been very lethargic and experience light-headedness and dizzy spells I can’t even think straight. I do not want to go back on anything but I need to know how long before these crippling symptoms will subside. Thanks,
Geoorge in Houston
AskDocWeb: Do not stop taking Zoloft without first talking to your doctor. If the symptoms don’t disappear within 24-36 hours then you may need to wean off gradually by reducing dosage over time.
Please note that there are some health concerns with using St. John’s Wort.
Subj: Dizziness
Date: 11/15/2007
I was in the emergency room yesterday after a night of spinning and dizziness is this really “Vertigo” or “zoloft” side effects, I have been taking 25mg for 6 months. Thanks for your input on this EA.
Elz
AskDocWeb: The dizziness really is vertigo but Zoloft has not been known to cause something that severe.
Subj: Afraid of sexual side effects
Date: 11/19/2007
I would like to try zoloft for my social anxiety but I’m really afraid of the sexual side effect. I’m a 31yr old male. What are the chances of having sexual side effects if I’m on a low dose, like 25 mg?
Johnny
AskDocWeb: Very low if at all, about a one percent chance of sexual side effects.
Subj: Changes in weight
Date: 11/27/2007
My question is that when I started Zoloft, I lost five pounds or so but felt much better mentally. However, now I have been off the product for about a month or more and am now gaining weight. Why is this happening. My mental state is fine and will probably continue to be fine unless I keep putting on weight.

Subj: Zoloft saved my life
Date: 11/29/2007
Zoloft saved my life – if you are unsure whether to take it or not because of the negative stuff written here everyone has different reactions. I tried other SSRIs but couldn’t tolerate any of them. I went through an extremely stressful time which caused me to start having panic attacks which would just come out of nowhere. My doctor was very smart and eased me on to it while I started also taking a maintenance dose of xanax- everything she told me that would happen happened. After a few weeks I didn’t need the xanax at all. For a while I carried it around in my purse just in case but the attacks got farther and farther in between and I haven’t had one in over a year. I can now sleep like a regular person. Sometimes I do feel a little foggy. I’m working on decreasing from 150 to 100 and hope to get all the way off of it. I started decreasing the amount about three weeks ago and noticed some of the same tingling and burning sensations that I had before but very limited and I didn’t have any panic attacks. I’m so grateful that my doctor took the time to help me get through the first few weeks. I was so afraid to start taking something b/c I didn’t want to feel drugged up. I feel so much better that I’m not worrying about stupid things anymore.

Subj: Gained 15 pounds
Date: 12/6/2007
I took 25mg of zoloft daily, I felt good but I was always VERY tired so I slept too much…I gained 15 lbs within 5 months as well when I was the same weight for a long time, I believe this pill made me gain this weight. For the sake of getting fat I quit hoping I can lose this weight it wasn’t worth it! To all those people with anxiety note that you need more then a pill to ever get better!

Subj: 9 years on Zoloft ends
Date: 12/9/2007
I’ve been on Zoloft for 9 years and up until recently it dawned on me that I think my body is immune to the meds. I wasn’t feeling lousy but I wasn’t feeling great anymore either. My first few years of taking zoloft had me feeling great. Albeit, I went from 116 pounds to 162 while on Zoloft. I’ve stopped taking zoloft for the first time and it’s been 2 weeks. I experience the zaps, the mood swings, the irritability but I’m going to hang in there because that is nuts to be depended on a drug for that long. When I’m feeling irritable, I pray and I also use the mind over matter techniques. Your mind controls the way you think and if you are capable of changing your mind set, you can get through this. These withdrawals can take me to hell and back, I will still refuse to continue with Zoloft. When talking to your Dr about the meds, they do not have enough info on the drug and now that Zoloft’s 10yr patent is up, everyone from Walgreens to Toys or Us will be selling some form of it. My advice is to hand in there with the withdrawal symptoms because they too will pass. God Bless.

Subj: Zoloft on drug screen?
Date: 12/12/2007
I have a question about zoloft. I have taken it and is now coming up dirty on a drug screen for marijuana. Is this possible? Please get back to me.
Jenni
AskDocWeb: We found one source that says it may show up as a false positive for benzodiazepines (Ref: 31) but not marijuana.
Subj: Lost my sexual desire
Date: 12/12/2007
I have been taking Zoloft now for about 1 year now and have lost my sexual desire and full erection. If I stop taking this drug, how long will it take to get back to normal? Will everything go back to normal?
Bub
AskDocWeb: Of course everyone is different as to how their body will respond after discontinuing a medication but we would expect that it may take a few months.
Subj: Tongue swollen and floaters
Date: 12/14/2007
I have been taking Zoloft for 4 months. 2 months ago it was increased to 150 mg daily. Lately my tongue burns and is swollen. Food has no taste, could it be the Zoloft? I am also experiencing floaters in my eye.
Dorothy
AskDocWeb: Swelling of the tongue is one of the signs of an allergic reaction, please consult with your doctor.
Subj: First trimester
Date: 12/17/2007
Can I take ultram in my first trimester? And is it safe to take ultram while taking zoloft and wellbuturin?
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: Please talk to your doctor about the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. Ultram is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Ultram.
Subj: Just started Zoloft
Date: 12/24/2007
I just started taking Zoloft in a generic form (sertraline, 50 mg/day) a few weeks ago for major depression and generalized anxiety disorder. I’m a nineteen year old girl in her first year of college. I’m beginning to notice certain side effects. I’m starting to notice diarrhea and constipation (a seemingly contradictory mix, but take my word for it), slight headaches, a lot of drowsiness, some VERY disturbing nightmares, and I’m beginning to confuse dreams with reality and vice versa.

Subj: Considering weaning off Zoloft
Date: 12/24/2007
I started Zoloft about 11 years ago. Went to another drug and now back to 100 mg. sertraline. For the last four years I’ve had a shaking index finger. What at first appeared as forgetfulness is now far more apparent. I’m the type of person who knows where everything is. So, when I started misplacing, forgetting and such I thought it was temporary. Now I’m the talk of my family. Don’t like it and I feel that since I’ve only noticed this in the last six months since increasing my dosage to 100 mg., I feel the culprit is Zoloft/sertraline. I’m contemplating weaning myself off this drug over the next year. I’ve tried before, too quickly, and I was a self-described witch on wheels. I’m considering weaning myself off a tiny bit at a time. Any thoughts?
K.
AskDocWeb: It is best to talk this over with your doctor but yes, you may be able to wean off over a period of time.
Subj: I tried to quit
Date: 12/28/2007
I have been on Zoloft for almost a year now and when I tried to quit, (under my doctor’s orders) I got these awful sensations in my head, tongue and eyes. Almost as if a shockwave was going through my body. It was tingling too. I have taken numerous other anti-depressants before and never had this problem. I gave it two months of tapering off and then two weeks of taking none at all and I am still experiencing the sensations. I am almost ready to start taking it again just so the feeling will go away. Can anyone tell me what to do to help this? Plus- Tapering off isn’t and does not work.
