Subj: Coming off Zoloft
Date: 11/27/2010
I started Zoloft (25mg-50mg) for debilitating antenatal depression three weeks before my son was born and continued for another five months before the tapering process. I went from 50 to 25 to 12.5 each week with no side effects. Then, a few days into the 12.5 it got really hard! Dizzy spells at night made me feel terrible! I stayed at 12.5 for two weeks and the dizziness was reduced but didn’t go away completely. I went to every other day and now I’m almost 1 week completely off and DIZZY!!!! I have hope that in the next couple months the dizziness will be history. I don’t regret taking Zoloft. It save my life and my family.

Subj: Difference between day and night
Date: 1/7/2011
Zoloft quieted my mind and has given me a great sense of serenity during the day. I feel like my emotions are now fitting for the situations I am in. At night, I’m in the holocaust…I’m experiencing nuclear war..I’m holding my dead baby…

Subj: Weight gain or loss?
Date: 2/3/2011
I was wondering if being on Zoloft, it makes you either gain weight or lose it? I hear tons of stories some lose and some gain or does it just depend on the person? Don’t understand….

Jteran

AskDocWeb: Whether you have any change in weight while taking Zoloft depends on the person. Note that the patient information for Zoloft says that changes in appetite or weight loss should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Crying non-stop for 3 hours
Date: 2/8/2011
I was on Zoloft almost 15 years ago for depression as a young teen. Since almost 15 years have passed, I could not remember what the side effect was. All I knew was that there was a reason I was taken off of it in the first place. However, since I couldn’t remember… I was open-minded. I have been on Trileptal as a mood stabilizer for about a year and a half, also battling drug addiction. I have been making some real progress… Then my doctor put me back on Zoloft (along with the Trileptal, since I couldn’t remember what the side effect was… God forbid I only take one medicine). I began Zoloft this morning and 45 minutes after I took it, I began to cry. I have been crying non-stop for 3 hours now. Maybe it could work after so long but it’s not really going to help if I kill myself before then, is it? I feel completely suicidal. I feel like one single pill has undone all the progress I’ve made in 1 1/2 years. I am never taking it again.

SSRI’s have always had bad effects on me. My mood stabilizer was the first to ever give me any relief. It’s very sad how I learn and accept now in therapy that there aren’t magic words or a pill that will help overnight, that I have to work at it… yet the docs at the same place won’t accept that it takes time. Very contradictory. I will say this: in 15 years I have never seen such a level of intolerance and un-professionalism in my life as I have at the free clinics. Pathetic. I guess you really do get what you pay for…

AskDocWeb: Always talk to your doctor before stopping any prescription medication. There may be things that you haven’t thought about that need to be considered.

Subj: Reaction to the Zoloft?
Date: 2/16/2011
I have been on Zoloft 100mg/day for 10 years. This past year I have taken Davix that I got from a Canadian pharmacy because it was cheaper. I had trouble getting more Davix so for about a month I took the generic for Zoloft. About 5 days ago I got the branded Zoloft. I have been having itching skin with red raised places on my arms and back for the past 3 days. Could I be having a reaction to the Zoloft now even though I never did before?

M

AskDocWeb: It is within the realm of possibility. Allergic reactions and allergies are strange in that you can be allergy free your whole life and then one day wake up allergic to a whole host of things. It is possible to develop an allergic response even after years of safely taking a drug. If you suspect an allergic response, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Subj: MAO’s
Date: 2/28/2011
I just started Zoflot last week in a pschy hospital. An now I have a serious dry cough & the Dr. put me on PROMETHAZINE & NOREL SR. They both say dont take with MAO’s. So I was wondering if it would be ok to take with them also. Have a seziure med also.

Tracy

AskDocWeb: It is important to make sure that your doctor knows about all the medications you are taking so that you can avoid those nasty drug interactions. Note that individuals can experience dangerous injuries if certain drugs are taken while using Zoloft. MAO’s (MonoAmine Oxidase Inhibitors) can be fatal when taken up to two weeks prior to beginning Zoloft or while on Zoloft.

Subj: Getting really bad side effects
Date: 3/1/2011
Hi, I’m a fifteen-year-old female that was put on Zoloft about 6 months ago for OCD, anxiety, and emetophobia, the fear of vomiting. At first, it worked wonders. I had no fear, no stress, and my OCD practically disappeared. Unfortunately, I started getting really bad side effects. I have no drive for anything whatsoever. I have no motivation to do work. The ironic thing is, is that last school year, I was the most motivated girl in my classes. I earned all As and had a 3.85-4.0 GPA. Now I have a 2.85 GPA because I’m careless.. I used to love school, but now I’ve actually thought of dropping out of high school. Also, I have zero emotion. I have emotion and feelings, but they feel like they’re not fully there. I feel spaced out. For example, if something bad happens, I feel careless. I really don’t care. I also procrastinate now, which I’ve NEVER done in my entire life! I’ll put off work until the night before, and sometimes I won’t ever do it at all. I just want my life back…

Rachel

AskDocWeb: Negative side effects should be reported to the doctor who prescribed the medication. If you believe that you are experiencing negative side effects not listed in the patient information, you are encouraged to report them to the FDA at 1-800-332-1088.

Subj: Zoloft dosage
Date: 3/18/2011
I started taking 25mg of Zoloft (Sertaline) about 2 weeks ago and just upped my dosage to 50 mg three days ago. I started my period yesterday and woke up this morning and got extremely dizzy, weak, and nauseous. Does this have something to do with the Zoloft? It has helped with my anxiety, but if this continues, I want to go back down to 25 mg.

Amy

AskDocWeb: Dizziness and weakness can result from low blood pressure and are listed along with nausea as possible side effects of Zoloft that should be reported to your doctor.

Subj: Permanent nerve damage to ears
Date: 3/22/2011
After my divorce in 1995, I started taking Zoloft in 1996 because I was in bad shape. I stayed on it for about 9 years not knowing it would cause permanant nerve damage to my ears. I finally was able to get off it in 2004 and started noticing I was having problems with my hearing. Long story short, at age 46, after having a hearing test it was determined that I needed hearing aids, so I now wear hearing aids because of the Zoloft. I am not happy about this at all. If you are taking Zoloft PLEASE have your hearing monitored!!!!

Subj: Shocking dreams
Date: 3/29/2011
I have been taking Zoloft about 15yrs.I have chronic fatigue syndrome and get depressed with what I can’t do. For me it was fantastic as it helped the depression and also think clearly. But I have been having shocking dreams for a long time leaving me depressed until they fade away and last night realized it may well be this medication [100mg daily]. I have been weening myself off them for about 3 weeks now. Thankyou for all this information!

Judy

AskDocWeb: You are welcome Judy. Remember to always consult with your doctor before discontinuing any prescription medication. The reason for doing that is to allow you consider the consequences and help you avoid unpleasant surprises.

Subj: Don’t put your faith in a medication to fix problems
Date: 4/8/2011
I had developed this tendency to hole up in the house and not go anywhere after a while it seemed to fit social anxiety symptoms even though socially I function pretty well and have no problem relating and talking to people. I also developed a real anxiety and stress over furloughs looming layoffs and no real security over income. Not because I’m a bad worker or not a hard worker but because there’s no security and it makes you stress about worry about bills about what will happen if you get laid off etc. etc.

I don’t think most of the time you need to take anti depressants anti anxiety medication etc. Most of the time you’re feeling the way you do because the way you life is. Example: your job, your relationship, your bills, your stability. Medications just mask the real problem and help you deal with it. If someone taking medication who was dealing well all of a sudden gets worse you can almost surely assume it was because of a life/mood altering situation. Don’t put your faith in a medication to fix the problem more often than not it masks your ability to realize the real problem and correct it. Overall keeping you more pacified and conformed to the increasingly crazy fast paces life style society requires us to lead.
