Subj: Zyban side effects
Date: 9/17/2006
I have used Zyban successfully once to quit smoking. Unfortunately after a year I started again and here I am on Zyban for the second time, fourth day. Both times I had some side effects initially which were impaired driving ability, dry mouth, tension/angry outbursts at my family. By the fourth day now I feel more stable but am not able to sleep tonight. It is 1 am and I am wide awake. I only take this as long as I have to…and then I go off. Last time I found towards the end of the first month I started to get seriously depressed…crying etc. A month however was enough time to get over the worst of the cravings. I will say that Zyban, while not perfect, DFEINATELY has helped me and hopefully will help me again to quit. I instantly notice a reduced desire to smoke and that smoking is less appealing within the first couple days of taking the Zyban. None of the severe withdrawal anxiety and feeling panic and is you are going to crawl out of your skin is present while on the Zyban. I know others it worked very well for and some people who just can’t seem to take it. For some of us IT WORKS and for others ..it just doesn’t.

Subj: Zyban insomnia
Date: 9/22/2006
I started taking Zyban about 2 weeks ago to quit smoking. (Knock on wood) The only side affects I have so far is sleeplessness. I quit smoking 2 weeks earlier than my quit date b/c it made my cigarettes worthless. I am hoping to be off of this in 10 weeks.

Subj: Zyban seizure
Date: 10/5/2006
I had previously tried hypnosis and acupuncture to stop smoking without success. I then tried Zyban after taking 5 tablets I experienced chest pains and nusea. My husband fearing a heart attack took me to hospital where I had all the usual tests which came back clear. Whilst at the hospital I started to feel extremely unwell, what followed was an absolute nightmare. I had most of the side effects listed including facial seizures and fainting on standing up. The hospital started me on tablets and injections to try to counteract these effects. I was in hospital for 10 days and off work for 7 months. My face is still partially twisted after 2 years. The hospital had filmed and taken photos when the seizures happened, then in July of this year the consultant at the hospital got in touch asking for my permission to submit an article to the lancet together with photos taken due to the rarity of the effects.

Subj: Bugging out
Date: 10/14/2006
Subj: Zyban I had all of these side effects including shortness of breath but I believe this is from nicotine withdrawal. I’ve also experienced skin crawling sensations. I thought I might have caught body lice from someone on the bus. LOL! Every inch of my body itched I thought I was bugging out. Trouble swallowing along with dry mouth.

AskDocWeb: You need to talk with your doctor because those are some of the signs of an allergic reaction.
Subj: Off the chart nervousness
Date: 10/18/2006
I started Zyban 1 and a half weeks ago. My doctor recommended that I take one pill a day for the first seven days, all was well. After my first week I started the two pills a day and went off the chart for nervousness, inability to sleep, and feel like I have a lump in my throat. Is this a side effect that will go away with time or is this because I am just too sensitive to the product. Please help with any information.
Suzanne
AskDocWeb: Yes, that can happen with Zyban and it may not go away with time. Best to talk with your doctor because that feeling in your throat could be cause for concern.
Subj: Zyban experience
Date: 10/19/2006
I’ve been taking Zyban for 6 weeks now. I started taking one pill for the first 5 days then 2 per day. I set my quit for 10 days. On that day I felt that I didn’t get a chance to have my final farewell cigarette so when I got home from work I lit up – kind of felling guilty. I took one drag and I realized that I didn’t get the feeling of enjoying my last cigarette because I just didn’t enjoy it any more. I haven’t had an urge that I can’t handle since. I’ve been around smokers and it hasn’t bothered me at all.
The side effects started right away. I actually felt great at first. I had dizzy spells for the first week or so but they decreased drastically. After about 2 weeks I noticed I stopped sleeping. I was exhausted. I went back to only taking one pill a day. I started having nightmares when I did fall asleep. I still can’t sleep and after reading other peoples feed back I realize that this itch I’ve been having may also be caused by Zyban too. I’ve been concerned that I have head lice or bed bugs. My legs are itch only in the evening. The palms of my hands are itchy during the day. I was staring to feel like I was going a little crazy because of this. I don’t know if it is the Zyban or the fact that I have not slept more then three hours a night in the past 4 weeks but I have little or no attention span. I can sit at my desk and do absolutely nothing for an hour and it really doesn’t bother me. I have become forgetful. I feel like a zombie.
My home life has been affected because of this. I feel as though my better half thinks I’m being cold and emotionless. He did make a remark that “me being frigid is worth my health.” I think that means that he’s being understanding but it makes me terribly upset knowing that I am acting differently.
The end result has been worth it but I would like to stop taking Zyban now. I do feel like I have kicked the habit for good but I do feel like I need to stop taking it before my 3 months are up. Are my chances of staying smoke free drastically reduced if I stop taking Zyban early? This is a life improvement but I don’t want to lose my job or my mind!
Erika
AskDocWeb: Stopping the Zyban reduces your chances but not drastically. Your chances of staying smoke free depend more on your commitment than on the Zyban.
Subj: Feel like a freak
Date: 10/27/2006
Ok, I started taking Zyban. I felt the usual side affects dry mouth, sleeplessness. That went away. I was fine then a week, then my second week in I had a panic attack when I was driving, it was awful. I stopped taking the meds that day and then the next day I broke out in HIVES this is awful. I can’t stand it. I am smokefree for 10 days today and want to be normal again. I was normal when I smoked now I feel like a freak. Hopefully I get through this and stay quit.

AskDocWeb: Getting hives is an allergic reaction to the Zyban. It would be dangerous for you to continue use.
Subj: Zyban side effects
Date: 10/31/2006
I took zyban for about 3-4 weeks, stopping smoking. But I have the following side effects, this too after 2 months of not taking zyban. – numbness over whole body – spacing out throughout the day – paranoid feelings constantly. My question is, how long (IF AT ALL) until these feelings generally go away ? Thanks
Rer
AskDocWeb: These side effects may or may not go away. You should talk with your doctor about what Zyban is doing to you.
Subj: Day Five of not smoking
Date: 11/2/2006
Am on DAY FIVE of NOT SMOKING and am taking Zyban twice a day as I am totally addicted to nicotine and can not see any nicotine replacement helping me. Since taking Zyban I have had a dry-ish mouth and all ciggies tasted yuck from pill one – it was like I was no longer getting any stimulation/’hit’ from the smoke and therefore could ‘taste’ what smokes really taste like (yucky)and I reckon I started slight withdrawal symptoms strait away. I don’t reckon I could do it cold turkey and Zyban has really helped me so far. Yes I get cranky easy but I put that down to withdrawals, not Zyban. Zyban seems to help dampen down that ‘devil voice’ in your head that says – awww just one wont hurt. Yes I still think about smoking all the time but its easy to say I AM NOT SMOKING ANYMORE SO HURRY UP AND GET OVER IT!!! AND my husband is still smoking probably 2 packs a day and I AM COPING WITH THAT TOO! Most of the side effects of Zyban are also side effects of nicotine withdrawal. If it works for you, go for it because nicotine is an evil, evil, nasty master and whatever breaks its bonds for you is a good, good thing. Good luck to you all – it can be done!

Subj: Zyban worked
Date: 11/8/2006
I took Zyban about 2 years ago to help me stop smoking. After taking it for a week, I started getting insomnia, where I would only sleep about 3 hours a night and still feel great. My mood was heightened, but I did notice that I would get a little snappy at my son and had to watch for that. I quite smoking after two weeks and just had no desire to light up again. Now, 2 years later, I am still smoke-free. I only took Zyban for 2 months, but during that time, I lost 15 pounds and had more energy than my then 6 year old son. I had little to no appetite and would get mildly itchy (skin crawling-type feeling), but I would do it all over again if I started smoking again. Zyban worked SOOOO well for me and the energy and lack of needing to sleep helped me become so productive. My house was spotless!
