Subj: From a psychologist
Date: 4/9/2009
Been on Zyban for about 14 days now 150mg 1/day for 7, then 150mg bid. Pretty much ran the gamut of side effects, but they’re manageable. For anyone who mentions being depressed beforehand or having suicidal ideations, please remember to consult your Dr. As a psychologist, I am keenly aware that a depressed mood (even slightly, chronically blue, etc) in advance is something you MUST talk to your doctor about, even if you’re not looking for help with it. Bupropion is an antidepressant, but in patients whom are taking it as such there is a support network that MUST be in place. So has it worked for me? Yes. It seems to have, and the symptoms are manageable FOR ME. Remember, every patient is different, and keeping in close contact with your Dr is essential for the success of your quit. Don’t ever forget that this drug causes changes in your brain – something that you should be very keen to keep monitored closely. All the best, and good luck with your quits!

Subj: WARNING:
Date: 4/26/2009
I started taking zyban 7 weeks ago, it didn’t help me stop smoking. What it did do was HORRIFIC, I suffered CHRONIC FATIGUE so horrible I had to go back to bed, mild HEADACHES, NECK PAIN, LOSS OF INTEREST in anything, and the worst was the LACK OF CONCENTRATION. I couldn’t read for more than ten minutes. I hadn’t read a newspaper for 7 weeks. CONFUSION because I couldn’t concentrate. This lead to FRUSTRATION thinking I was going mad and my brain was turning to mush. This product should be BANNED. I am just hoping that now I have quit this evil drug that no damage has been done to my brain and I will return to normal. PATCHES are a much better alternative combined with exercise and staying away from people who smoke for a while. I can see how some people become totally in DESPAIR on this drug and consider taking their lives. I think I was heading in that direction. Sure it might help some/maybe many but for the few or many that this drug has terrible side effects it’s just not worth the risk or the social cost that your inability to work has. PLEASE DO NOT USE ZYBAN.

Subj: Birth defects?
Date: 5/6/2009
My wife and I recently found out that she is pregnant. She is about 2 months along. I’ve been taking Zyban, to help quit smoking, for the past 2 weeks. Should we be using condoms for sex? Are their any side/birth defects for baby or mom associated with the use of Zyban in men?
Camac
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of any birth defects associated with the use of Zyban.
Subj: The strangest and most unexpected side-effect
Date: 5/10/2009
Here in the UK doctors are sometimes reluctant to prescribe Zyban because of the risk of severe side-effects. I sympathise with all those who’ve suffered but I’d like to mention my so far positive experience on this drug. I’m in my second week on Zyban and am pleased to report I stopped smoking on day 8. My interest and desire gradually wained, while smoking became more and more unpleasant. I went from being a 20-or-more a day smoker to feeling like a 14-year-old taking my first drags behind a bike-shed; the taste and sensation had become almost alien to me. Odd but good. Regarding side-effects: The strangest and most unexpected side-effect that I’ve experienced is that I’ve gone off alcohol! I have my own pub so was a daily drinker – about 70 units a week. Now, I can’t face a drink (I can lose my beer gut while I’m on the course of tablets, but hope that I can enjoy a drink again sometime). I have had the slightly spacey feeling that some contributors have described – almost as if you hear yourself speaking from outside yourself. Only mild and not entirely unpleasant. I’m keeping an eye on how I feel throughout the treatment and will be vigilant for more sinister side-effects. So far, though, so good.

Subj: Ringing in the ears
Date: 5/19/2009
Now into my 5th week not smoking, it’s like a miracle drug. I seem to have quite a few side effects though and ringing in the ears is the worst. I’m confident I can give up, and I don’t care about the side effects, they are no worse than all the effects smoking has.

Subj: I was an emotional wreck!
Date: 5/19/2009
I was prescribed Zyban to help me quit smoking. I have quit but without the help of this drug. After only 1 week of taking Zyban, I was an emotional wreck! I could not control my feelings and suffered great anxiety. Remember, this was the 1st week, so I was still smoking. Once I threw the pills away, I was fine. I hope they take this drug off the market. I think it is dangerous.

Subj: Insomnia
Date: 6/5/2009
I have been taking Wellbutrin 150 twice a day for eleven days and yes it has truly helped me to quit smoking. I feel very confident that I am done with cigarrettes. The insomnia is quite bad though. I have noticed some people on here say that they just take the one pill a day. Is that ok? I would prefer just to take the one.
Lana
AskDocWeb: If that works well enough for you to quit smoking then great. However, according to the directions, the daily dosage is increased after 3 days and remains at the higher level for the remaining treatment.
Subj: Can’t control my anger
Date: 6/30/2009
I’m in my first week of taking Zyban. I am smoking more than ever because my stress levels went up since I started taking them. It feels like I can’t control my anger amongst my friends and family. I also feel confused and can’t sit and work. I really want to quit, so I will drink 1 tablet for a while and see how it goes. Then just warn everyone when I start taking 2 a day.

AskDocWeb: Several people have reported difficulty in controlling their temper, anger problems, and irritability.
Subj: Allergic reactions?
Date: 8/8/2009
I am on Wellbutrin…do you know of any reactions with this drug? I am taking the generic form and I seem to be very irritable. I do think it is working and want to stay on it because the weight makes me even more depressed.
Anna
AskDocWeb: Allergic reactions are rare but have been report to occur in 1 to 3 per 1000. These are characterized by pruritus (itching), urticaria (skin eruptions), angioedema (swelling that may appear on the face, lips, neck, throat, hands, feet, genital, or abdominal organs), and dyspnea (shortness of breath). If you think you may be having an allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention.
Subj: 5 years of hell

Awful drug My BF became Manic on it, and is now addicted and entering Rehab. I was wondering if the owners of this site have any connection with Glaxo the manufacturers of this awful drug. I’ve researched it alot and it SPEED. That’s why everyone is going nuts on it. Pushing dopamine- is as bad as crack or meth only this one is legalized. Someone said they would rather die from smoking then live on this. I know and can say ITS POISON. SOMEONE SUE THESE PEOPLE SELLING THIS STUFF. Its been 5 years of hell and once he is detoxed from it (that’s right he needs detox to get off) we don’t know what his permanent brain damage is. The stuff is criminal and the makers knew all along. Just awful.
Robo
AskDocWeb: We have NO connection with Glaxo. There are so many commercials touting the benefits that equal time is needed for the disadvantages. That is why we publish posts like yours, so that people can have both sides of the story.
Subj: Personality changes
Date: 9/5/2009
My husband has been taking zyban for the last couple of months, at first it was great he really cut down and seemed to loose his cravings for fags, he had slight insommnia and constipation. When he finished the course the doc had given him he again wanted to smoke so the doctor prescribed another month of tablets. Over the last couple of weeks he has become depressed, has a very short fuse and is loosing his temper really quickly, he has even said he feels he doesn’t know who he is anymore, what is worringing is that he cannot see that his personality has changed. Have made him stop taking these tablets, gonna get him to try patches instead from the doctor. I do not think these tablets are safe have heard too many stories of your mental health being affected, there are lots of methods to help people give up smoking and taking a tablet with so many side effects should be avoided.

DONT USE THIS POISON My now x BF became addicted to this stuff five years ago. It made him manic, and mean. His smoking increased and he cannot get off of it. This stuff is legalized speed and the FDA should ban it. Look at all the negative reports on this site alone oh and AskDocWeb – why arent u warning people about this. The shear number of complaints on this site merits strong investigation. Buproprion ruined my BF and my lives. He is a doc and now that his shrink refuses to write him anymore he is writing it for himself because he cant get off of it. And if u look here- these reactions are the NORM- are u DOC Web working for the drug companies or what? You should be telling people to stop this not encouraging them to start. ITS SPEED AND YOU AND THE MANUFACTURERS KNOW IT. NOW THEY ARE GOING TO RELEASE IT AGAIN FOR WEIGHT LOSS. ITS SPEED – DONT USE IT!

Subj: Disoriented and tired all the time
Date: 10/3/2009
I stopped taking zyban yesterday after 8 weeks. I stopped smoking in the second week from 50 per day. I stopped taking zyban because I was disoriented, was tired all the time, and just wanted to sleep. I felt very depressed and almost like I was not fully functioning. I have also felt very irritable and not interested in many things. I fortunately have stopped smoking and hope now I am not taking the tablets I will start to feel better.
