Subj: Allergic Reaction to Zyban
Date: 2/3/2003
I have been on Zyban for just under 2 weeks now. Two days ago, I noticed a welt or two on the trunk of my body but figured it was stress from having just found out a loved one had cancer. Two days later (today), while driving, the soles of my feet itched so bad, I had to pull over to itch.

Tonight, I woke from a sound sleep due to the itching which was now in between my fingers, my scalp, the back of my neck, and upper torso again. I realized this was not a reaction to stress but maybe the Zyban. Got online and discovered many others having very similar reaction right down to itching on the soles of the feet. Package insert says to stop taking Zyban and call a physician immediately. Maybe because several individuals have said that the itching persisted. I’m calling my doc tomorrow.

I have used Zyban for approx. 6 months. I quit smoking 2 months ago and I am doing very well. Recently I have experienced an irregular heart beat and wondered if this was a side effect of Zyban. I haven’t stopped the medication in fear of a relapse. I was hoping someone would be able to answer this question.

Janet

AskDocWeb: Congratulations on becoming a nonsmoker Janet! Zyban was suppose to help you quit. Now that you have done that, you can stop taking it. To continue taking it would be against the usage recommended by the manufacturer.

Subj: Zyban

I have successfully quit smoking for over 3 months now and toke Zyban for exactly 7 days. I became extremely anxious and could never catch my breath as if I were having a panic attack all day long. I could not drive or function at work because I felt drunk all the time. It was just terrible! It’s been 3 months since I’ve quit and I only mildly crave a cigarette once in awhile.

Subj: Zyban: stopped taking it, sill getting a reaction

I stopped taking this 10 days ago. I’m still suffering from a severe allergic reaction – my skin is covered in scars and scabs because the itch is so severe. No anti-histamine is helping. I’m tearing my skin in my sleep. Yet the documentation provided by the drug companies describes this side affect as mild skin irritation – mild compared to what?

Subj: side effects of zyban

My husband started taking zyban about a week ago. By accident he took two pills on Tuesday. He couldn’t remember if he had taken it or not so took another one. He called me from work and said he felt like his skin was crawling, his mouth and hands felt numb and said that he almost collapsed.

We spoke with the pharmacy as well as the doctor today because he is still having anxiety and nervousness along with his lip still being numb, his eyes hurt, and his hand keeps getting numb on and off. He has not taken another pill since Tuesday morning. They say the effects will wear off but we’re getting a little nervous. Is this a normal reaction. Could he be allergic?

Seall

AskDocWeb: The questions you are asking need to be answered by the your husband’s doctor.

Subj: Zyban, any other suggestions

I started taking zyban, and the effects were not in my favor, like a few of the others I started to notice the effect right away. I am a mother of three and this method didnt work for me. I became very irrate and I noticed it right away. I was wondering if anyone had any other advice? because I’ve heard of positive effects for people on zyban, but its definatley, not my choice to quit .

Subj: Wellbutrin

About Zyban (Wellbutrin) It says that you should be started at 150mg for 2 days then go to 300mg thereafter for a total treatment period of 7-12 weeks. Will it have the same results if you stay on 150mg thru the whole 12 weeks?

Please let me know thanks

AskDocWeb: Your doctor will decide what dosage is right for you according to your personal medical history.

Subj: side effects

Ok, so I am experiencing side effects from the 7 pills I have taken so far. I read the warnings and precautions label and stopped taking the drug. In the last 24 hours my symptoms are getting worse. It started with a mild skin rash. By last night I could not sleep because I was itching so bad. I tried my allergy steroid cream and it didn’t help. i took a benedryl and rubbed caladryl on my arms, I passed out but I woke up looking worse. My cheeks are hot and red, my entire body is aching. I have a headache, a backache, and neck pain. I feel weird and I do not know how to describe the way I am feeling. Not quite hallucinating but not normal. I will call my dr. tomorrow but I would like to treat this without having to spend more money I do not have. Please do you have any advise?

Jen

AskDocWeb: Remember, we do not give medical advice. It does sound like it may not work for you. Are you exploring other ways to quite smoking?

Subj: Zyban

This stuff is not for everyone!. I’m normally a very meek, bookworm type person. But about 4 days after started taking zyban, it made me loose my temper. I would get enraged at the most trivial offenses. I finally quit taking it after someone pulled out in front of me and I ran them off the road, I was so mad. Very scary stuff!

Mike

Subj: Zyban is driving me crazy or is that just me?

I have been taking Zyban for approx 7 weeks and l feel like l am going mad. I am suffering strong depression, panic attacks, a lack of confidence, headaches, irrational behavour and a general sense of ill health. Granted l was a little blue before l started taking it but this as become out of control.

Subj: zyban and “smoke-away”
Date: 4/17/2003
Zyban worked great for my wife, except that when she stopped zyban after about two and a half months, she started smoking again. Me, I freaked out on the stuff on the third day of taking it — all the nasty side effects, mainly, just that — freaked out head to toe, brain to heart, skin to innards. I had such a difficult time combating anxiety, I thought I was hallucinating and rushed home from work, fearing the drive.

Interacting with people become an impossibility. It only took another day to come down, but I’m afraid zyban is not for me. My wife tried zyban again, but the second time it didn’t work at all for her; it just doubled our costs, buying cigarettes and zyban. Right now we are looking into the “natural” herbal program, “smoke-away”. There’s another company that does the same thing, maybe more, but I’m not privy to them. Can you research them for your web site and e-mail me when you post. Based on your intriguing and impressive investigation of avacor, though apparently, at least somewhat biased, I can already guess your opinion on a herbal alternative, but I am interested to read your spin. Let me know. Thanks.

JK

AskDocWeb: Okay, JK, we have added “smoke away” to our research list. If anyone has experience with the “smoke away” product, please contact us with your comments, both pro and con.
Be sure to check the ingredient list in any herbal remedy that you try. Some herbs interact with medication.

I started a course of Zyban about two years ago; I took them for 3 months. I had mood swings, depression and was generally bad tempered, but I didn’t smoke. It was good in that aspect. I worked with one of my friends and I didn’t appear at work the next day, that afternoon they came round with spares keys and found me in my bed unable to awaken me I was rushed to hospital they apparently carried out allsorts of tests from blood, lumber punches, X-rays & CT scans and they could find nothing wrong with me they just put it down as a possible side effect of the Zyban. I was in there for seven days and then off work for six weeks for the next 3 months I had to sleep in the middle of the day I was always tied. I also suffered memory loss and lack of concentration. Even two years later I am back on the smokes and still suffer from bouts of tiredness and lack of concentration.

I started Zyban 14 days ago. On the 15th day, I experienced increase heartbeat, breathing difficulty and serious insomnia (waking up almost every 20 minute). I stop the medicine today and found that my craving for cigarette came back.

I started taking zyban about 1 week ago. Since I started taking it, I have been having headaches everyday. I am not sure if this is due to a vision disturbance or some reaction with the zyban. These headaches wear me out and I am beginning to wonder if it is worth the trouble, not to mention the cost! Also, I seem to be quickly angered and sometimes easily upset. I also find that my concentration is off. I couldn’t remember if I had taken a pill the other day (I take 2 a day now)and then couldn’t remember if I had taken a second pill later (I realized later I hadn’t taken any pills at all that day!). Are these side effects that I should be concerned about or not? I don’t know if I can hang in there to quit if this is what my life will be like while taking zyban. On the upside, I do think it’s working, but I am not sure if it is the medicine or how bad I feel that keeps me from smoking.

Found your site through a Google search on the side effects of Zyban, which I plan to begin later today, after I get blitzed out drunk for the last time in my life. Gotta quit smoking and since I can’t drink with Zyban and I can’t trust myself to drink alcohol and not smoke, I’ve got to go teatotaller also. Wish me luck. I hope I don’t have any of the nasty effects that are mentioned for this drug program. Thanks for your site and all the hard work.

Stan

AskDocWeb: Good luck Stan. Please let us know how this goes for you.

Wellbutrin got me off cigarettes! Finally… I had almost given up giving up. Not ONCE did I notice any of the symptoms of the typical “nic-fit”, nor did I experience any of the physical side effects (of the bupropion) listed on your response page. However, I did go almost completely insane on the stuff (hallucinations and a nearly constant sense of euphoria) and had to stop taking it a couple of days ago. I returned to “normal” almost immediately (within 24 hours), but the only lasting effect seems to be that I am finally free from nicotene. I’d rather be crazy-happy for a few weeks than sick and bitter over an addiction for the rest of my life.

Peter

AskDocWeb: Sounds like the side effects were worth it for you to attain your goal. Congratulations! Maybe on your one-year anniversary you will remember to come back to let us know if you are still smoke-free.

Subj: Positive feedback?

I, too, am planning on taking Zyban, but I’m putting it off for another week–gotta at least drink a few more times!

After reading the feedbacks, I’m more hesitant than I was after reading the user manual. Aren’t there any positive feedbacks?
I have another question, which I’m assuming is obsolete since it wasn’t mentioned… Is Zyban safe to use with birth control pills?

Cat

AskDocWeb: If more people sent positive feedback you could read it, but we can only post the feedback we get. We found no reference about using Zyban with any kind of birth control.

I’ve been a smoker for 17 years and I’ve tried all the stop smoking remedies: Cold turkey, patches, gum, etc… Nothing worked for very long.
Finally I talked to my doctor about Zyban. I’ve been taking it for 4 days now and haven’t experienced any side effects other than a slightly dry mouth right after taking a dose.
The pleasure I used to get from smoking seemed to cease immediately. I can smoke 3 packs of cigarettes and not get a single bit of satisfaction from it. The cigs taste funny and I find myself putting the cigarette out after smoking it halfway.

I had originally planned to stop smoking in 3 days, but I might as well stop right now. Nicotine just isn’t doing anything for me anymore thanks to Zyban.

Hopefully this will be permanent.

Subj: Does Smoke Away work?
Date: 1/14/2004
I couldn’t use wellbutrin sr due to too many side effects. Has “smoke away” worked for anyone besides the testimonials on the sites that sell the product? My husband and I smoke and want to quit without driving each other crazy or worse. Any help or suggestions would be great! Thanks.

My son Marc is over in Iraq. He took Zyban to stop smoking. It seems like he had a severe reaction to the drug, seizure, loss of memory, numbness, slurred speech, trouble walking. Do these things usually go away after a few days or are they permanent? Thanks

Lillie Giras

AskDocWeb: The longest lasting effects we heard about were Nigel’s (see his post on 4/29/03), but from the feedback, most effects seem to pass within a couple weeks. Read more feedback
