Subj: Forth day of zyban
Date: 1/8/2004
I’m on my forth day of zyban, so far, I’ve had headaches from it. Because, I want to quit smoking for mine and my children’s sake I will keep with it for now. Last night I think I was having mild hallucinations but I haven’t experienced insomnia so far.I don’t know how long I can handle these headaches, hopefully they go away soon. Wish me luck.

Subj: My experience with zyban
Date: 2/24/2004

When I first started taking Zyban I constantly felt dizzy, withdrawn and ‘drunk’ for almost a whole week. After that, I began to feel better and even stopped smoking. However, within a few weeks I began to feel mood changes: normally I am a very balanced person but I became irritable, had sudden mood changes and so I decided to discontinue Zyban after about 6 weeks. Now, I’m a happy non-smoker, however during the first week that I’d stopped taking Zyban I felt dizzy and ‘spaced-out’ like I had when I first started taking the drug. Then I’ve also had a rash and itching at my ankles, neck and on my head. These are slowly improving, however I’d say to anyone who is attempting to give up smoking: only use this drug as a last resort and do without it if you can, it’s not worth all the risks.

Subj: Flu
Date: 3/10/2004
Within the first week of taking Zyban @ 300 mg / day I noticed that I no longer enjoyed smoking. I just didn’t get that nicotine lift anymore. Also being an daily beer drinker 3 – 5, I no longer had the erdge for beer either. I was down to one unenjoyable cigarette a day. THEN I got the flu and could not take Zyban for two days. For 5 weeks I have been back on Zyban @ 300 mg/day and it no longer seems to have any effect on me at all. ie: I’m smoking a pack a day and enjoying it and drinking the beer again and enjoying it. Maybe I should stop Zyban for awhile?

Scott

AskDocWeb: If it is not having an effect then aren’t you just wasting your time and money? Maybe you need a few weeks off, for your body to get back to normal, before trying again.

Subj: Laberderm
Date: 3/25/2004
I’m interested in a stop smoking research that is a pill and was on the news called “Laberderm” or something like it. They say it also took away the cravings for drinking. It is not supposed to be on the market for a couple of years but I would like to know more about it now if you can find anything out. Thank you

Terry

AskDocWeb: Thanks, Terry, we will take a look.

Subj: Decided to stop
Date: 3/30/2004
I started zyban a week ago, and I decided to stop (today). It is making me anxious, spacey, and unable to sleep well.
I am still gonna quit on saturday.

Subj: Trying Zyban
Date: 4/21/2004
I have been taking zyban for 2 days now and the only side effect I am experiencing so far is a constant headache. The tablets seem to be beginning to work as cigarettes taste very strange, a lot like car exhaust fumes! The other thing is that I feel quite nauseous after smoking! I will come back and report on how its going in another few days, right now I cant wait to reach my quit date that will be when I start taking two tablets a day.

Jane

AskDocWeb: Good luck Jane.

Subj: 18 days
Date: 4/27/2004
I used Zyban for exactly 18 days to quit smoking. I took two 150mg (1 morning, 1 early evening) pills for eight days before I quit and ten days after. I then quit the Zyban “cold turkey” and have been off both Zyban and nicotine for six weeks now. I suffered no ill effects but did have some vivid dreams. I think the Zyban helped me avoid the worst of the physical withdrawl but after that was over I saw no need to continue taking the Zyban. I also joined an online support group three days into my quit and I believe that the support?has done more to help me stay quit than the Zyban ever did. I threw away almost 1/3 of my first bottle of unused pills.

Subj: Not working
Date: 5/22/2004
I started taking Zyban five years ago to stop smoking, it worked within the first three months. However, I started smoking again a year ago and knew the only way I could quit was again to take Zyban. This time my doctor prescribed Zyban XL, it wasn’t available five years ago. I have been taking the Zyban XL for over three months now and nothing! No urge to quit what so ever. Why? Should I ask the doctor to put me back on regular Zyban, or is there even a difference? I know from experience the product works and works well. But not this time. HELP!

Pam

AskDocWeb: Yes, tell your doctor that the Zyban XL is not working.

Subj: 2nd time
Date: 5/27/2004
I have just started taking zyban again for the 2nd time. First time around they where absolutely great. and I know you might be saying well why is she taking them a ‘second’ time around then… well when I took them the first time (about 13-14 months ago) I packed in smoking for 3 months after my course had finished.

I started smoking again due to family problems, but it was out of choice not because I needed to! I had no side effects whatsoever. They where the best thing I ever invested in!

This time I am absolutely determined to stop (I don’t think I really really wanted to stop last time).

I am into my 3rd day and have not felt like smoking. I have gone from 20 cigarettes to 1-2 a day!

I do believe its mind over matter but the zyban certainly helps with mild depression and any other ‘turkeying’ effects from stopping smoking!

Subj: All is not well
Date: 5/31/2004
I started taking Zyban about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I quit smoking exactly 1 week after I started the drug and haven’t smoked or craved a cigarette yet. BUT all is not well. In the first couple of days I experienced mild headaches all day and light-headedness to the point that I found it very difficult to function at work. But I ignored these side effects and persevered because I wanted (NEEDED) to quit smoking. Over the next few days I experienced palpitations in my heart and also had some tightness to my chest giving me a little trouble breathing. This would occur approximately 2 hours after taking Zyban and last for about an hour.
I know that this should have caused me to contact my doctor, but I didn’t want him to take me off Zyban because it was working so well for me in other ways. The next side effect that really got to me was insomnia. I went for over 2 nights without any sleep at all and that is when I contacted the doctor. He prescribed a sleeping pill after listening to me tell him that I didn’t want to give up Zyban. But now the worst one has hit. Last night I broke out in hives over my entire body and the itching is driving me crazy. I have skipped my morning pill and probably will not take any more. I will be contacting my doctor today and letting him know and hopefully he can give me advice on how to get rid of these hives. This is all so upsetting to me because although I experienced many of the worst side effects, Zyban did seem to work for me in removing the cravings. I only hope that since I have quit for about a week and a half that my own willpower will be enough to keep me off cigarettes.

Subj: Good luck
Date: 6/3/2004
Sorry my English is not very good, but I am smoker 30 years and I am stop smoking. 3 months ago, thanks to this tablet zyban, but reason why I wish to stop smoking was my heavy breathing and after 3 months I am still breathing heavy. Maybe I going to see my GP this or next week. Good luck to everybody who wants to stop smoking.

Subj: Bottom line
Date: 6/17/2004
It’s been 3 years now since I took Zyban to quit smoking. This was the most awful experience in my life. After 3 days I developed and eyelid twitch this I didn’t think much of. After a week I started to feel crappy no appetite no energy. After 2 weeks I developed a fuzzy feeling in my head almost like a numbness in my forehead.
Week 3, I quit the stuff feeling sick to my stomach full of anxiety. I had blurred vision and trouble remember words. Even after quitting the situation got worse I took a week of work convinced I was dieing of something depressed not eating. Crying spells shaky and that damn eyelid twitch was un-relenting.
Finally sought help and the last thing I wanted to do was take another antidepressant as I was fine before Zyban and wanted to get back to normal naturally. But I simply had no control over how bad I was feeling, nausea, achy, couldn’t sleep. I just had this terrible overwhelming feeling I was going to die.
The doctor prescribed me celexa and a few days later I starting feeling better.
It’s been 3 years now and the feelings have lessened and lessened every month gradually. Smoking again but hey I feel great now. Bottom line this stuff almost killed me worst thing that ever happened to me. If you start to feel sick and anxious be very cautious it’s a terrible road to go down if you react to it like I did.

Subj: Great pill
Date: 6/17/2004
Well I have to say I am surprised at all the negative feedback on Zyban. I was a smoker for 17 years, a pack a day, and thought I’d never be able to quit (tried several times). 2 months ago my doctor prescribed me bubroprion (which is zyban but its only called zyban if its used for smoking, my insurance would not cover zyban but will cover bubroprion). I asked my doctor if it was a “wonder pill” and he said no.
I take 2 pills a day, 100 mg dosage, not time-released. I have to disagree with my doctor. For me it is a wonder pill. I have now been smoke free for 6 weeks and don’t think I will ever smoke again. The pill somehow takes away your interest in smoking. It is amazing. I should say that I am also using the patch in combination with the pill (I have tried the patch before by itself and it was no good). No side effects for me whatsoever.

Great pill.

Subj: Truly quit smoking
Date: 6/18/2004
I have smoked for more than 50 years and had tried everything available to stop smoking in vain until my Doctor prevailed on me to try Zyban, if I was serious, with complete confidence and now 18 months later I have truly quit smoking. I am most grateful for the product and their support structures.

Subj: No side effects
Date: 6/30/2004
I started taking zyban 1½ week ago, and yesterday I finally quit. I have no craving for nicotine, though my finger seems to get bored from not having that cig to play with. I have had no side effects whatsoever.

Subj: Bad side effects
Date: 7/2/2004
I only have taken 1 tablet yesterday and one today, and I feel terrible. I keep feeling lighted headed as though any minute I’m going to pass out. I’ve got the shakes the whole of my body feels warm and have a sickly feeling I feel so nervy and jumpy I will not be taking them tomorrow that’s for sure.

Subj: Ringing in ears
Date: 7/4/2004
I’m approaching my 13th day of taking Zyban and I have had a constant headache and a loud ringing of the ears for over a week now. I took Zyban three years ago to quit and it worked well. The ringing went away after a week. This time the headaches are worse and they seem to be sticking around. I am wondering if symptoms can stick around after the second week and then fade or if I will need to stop taking the drug. The ringing of the ears will soon drive me crazy!!

Subj: DEFINITE EFFECTS
Date: 7/5/2004
I’m on my fourth day of zyban 150mg (the first 2 pill day), down to 1 smoke a day already, but I think I’m losing my mind. I’m ghnasing teeth and my hands are shaking sometimes (like withdrawl symptoms actually). I feel no need to smoke, so I’m going to stay on one pill for now, hopefully it goes better in a while, I feel “high” actually, but it is stress/paranoid/getting lost. I’ve taken anti-depressants before but this is a LOT stronger. I think it’s still better than turning cold-turkey, the cold-sweats and constant aggression isn’t there. The side-effects should be listed as DEFINITE EFFECTS on the leaflette. The “highness/weirdness” rates right up there with illegal drugs. In low light conditions last night I saw bugs crawl on a wall, but my friend didn’t see them. People who are even slightly at risk of anxiety attacks shouldn’t take it either. Wish luck!

Subj: Personality change
Date: 7/8/2004
My husband used Zyban to quit smoking. He has quit smoking and has also stopped taking Zyban (about 10 days ago), the problem is, he has become emotionally abusive towards me. We did not have a perfect marriage before, but things have gotten really bad. The smallest things I do (or don’t do) set him off. He refuses to talk to me about any of it and then says I don’t listen to him(!?). He has started drinking more than usual and things are getting worse. Could this be a side effect? This seems to be the only thing I can come up with that might have caused this change in personality. Please let me know your thoughts.
