Subj: 150mg Zyban VS 600mg
Date: 4/10/2005
I started taking zyban 3 days ago today. I started on the 150mg and I am suppose to increase after today. I was just wondering because I seem to be a bit more moodier would it be better for me to continue to take only 150mg rather than the 300mg daily (8hrs apart)?

I actually feel like the side effects are not too bad, well then again there is not a steady concentrated amount in my blood yet. I will say my appetite has decreased, I still make sure I force my self to eat though so I won’t get into a comfortable habit of not eating. Hope you can help w/some of my concerns.

AskDocWeb Yes, you can take 150 mgs of zyban a day. That does work for some although it is intended to build up to the 300mg level for the maximum affect. Unfortunately, this also produces more side effects.

Subj: Bad news
Date: 4/11/2005
Well I am afraid in my opinion and many of the medical people I spoke to Zyban killed my husband and robbed me of the most wonderful man in the world… Lady down the road could not stop vomiting, came out in a huge rash all over…she stopped…speak to the Australian University in Canvberra. I am not the only one who has complained about Zyaban…seizures, rashes, violent headaches, there are more… THIS IS WRITTEN WITHOUT PREJUDICE.

Subj: Never again
Date: 4/11/2005
NEVER AGAIN will I go anywhere near Zyban/Wellbutrin! After taking it for just over a week, the most intense itch came over my entire body. Much like the others described here, I was crawling out of my skin! My scalp, neck, chest, armpits…even the palms of my hands and my feet were affected. I couldn’t sleep. Benadryl just made me TIRED and itchy. It’s comparable to massive poison ivy, it is horrible! Tonight my doc prescribed Allegra and prednisone. God, I hope it helps. I look like I have been beaten from the red welts. I have dug myself raw from the intense itching!

AskDocWeb Thanks for sharing and yes, the Prednisone and Allegra will help.

Subj: Seems worth it
Date: 4/14/2005
I have been taking Zyban for 2 days now and I feel slightly dizzy. This however seems worth it since I did not want a cigarette this morning until I got in the car whereas before I would wake up and smoke immediately. I hope this continues as I have tried NRT treatment on numerous occasions to no avail. Good luck to anyone in a similar boat!

Subj: Have to give up
Date: 4/18/2005
Hi, Have just returned from doctor with Zyban as 24years on I am still smoking. I took a breathe test and have 47% carbon monoxide in my blood – I have to give up. First tablet tomorrow AM and hope to give you good news soon.

AskDocWeb A 47% level of carbon monoxide in your blood would mean you are dead, so your breath test is probably not very accurate. Even heavy smokers have only a 10% level. Even so, we wish you good luck, if not, try using Zyban with the patch. That works better for some people.

I am 32, and smoke around 50 cigarettes per day and have tried quitting many times before…without success. I started taking Zyban 150mg 4 days ago. The doctor said I should take 2 per day, 12 hours apart.

So I did, and I felt absolutely awful. On the second day I looked on the net and found that it is recommended to take just 1 pill per day for the first 3 or 4 days… My GP omitted this info, and I just jumped in at 2 per day!!!
Headaches start within 30 minutes of taking each pill and last for about 2 hours. And it seems to be in the left side of my forehead. I have a constant “Spaced out” feeling. I can compare it with the effect of taking extasy from my recreational drug experimentations when I was a young man.
The first 3 days were awful, and at times, I was just in a haze sat at my desk at work, feeling like I was having an out of body experience, like transendental (?) meditation or something…
After 4 days, the side effects are getting a bit easier. Still feel like I am not quite “All there”, and have questioned whether I should drive a few times…
What I have discovered is that if I wake up a few hours earlier than normal (i.e. 5AM) and take a pill, then go back to bed, I find that I sleep right through most of the headache and the TRIPPY feeling, and wake up just catching the tail end of them.
After 4 days I feel more in control of what I am doing…especially at work.
As for the smoking… well, I just changed to rolling tobacco, cus its such a hassle to make a cigarette, that I am smoking maybe 20 per day and not feeling even remotely anxious as I usually would be. Last night, I ran out of cigarettes and didn’t feel like it was a problem… before zyban, running out of cigarettes at night, with the shops closed, would have been a major drama!!!
Anyway, I feel that the side effects are small compared to the “Terminal” effect of smoking…I feel confident that I will be able to stop within the next week. I just hope that my side effects don’t get much more serious… like hives, seizures, etc…

Subj: Thanks
Date: 5/7/2005
Thanks for all your help. The other people on the stop-smoke course seemed to be getting on ok with Zyban, so I thought it was just me being fussy! But I had the dry mouth, upset tummy and sleep disturbances and also just felt weird. I got a bit drunk while on them too so that didn’t help, no, they are not for me and I didn’t suffer as much as some of you all. Thanks again.

Subj: Emotional problems with Zyban
Date: 5/12/2005

My boyfriend has started zyban 2 weeks ago and after about 3 days started having emotional problems. Feelings from very old relationships have come back so strongly like it was yesterday. I have never heard of zyban triggering something like this and I have no Ida what to do because it’s a real problem and I’m so lost. Its easy to see that the zyban has triggered this because he has never had depression problems and his emotional health was perfect before but right after he started taking it his emotional health has plummeted and he no longer sees reason and logic. I am very worried about him because he doesn’t think that he needs to talk to a doctor and has just started to realize that the zyban is the reason for how horrible ,confused and depressed he feels. He is also experiencing, well I don’t even know what to call it maybe disassociation from his normal self he says he remembers doing everything from his past but its like it was another person controlling his body.

I am looking for any advice you may have to help. I know he should see a doctor but he won’t listen to logic right now. I am also wondering if you think the zyban has triggered something that even if he stops taking it the problem will persist like an avalanche once started it won’t stop or if he stops the medication he will become himself again. Sincerely,

AskDocWeb: There have been reports of some people experiencing a range of strong emotional responses after taking Zyban. People who have had such reactions said that they stopped when the drug was discontinued. Anyone who has such reactions needs to ask himself or herself, is the short-term unpleasantness worth the long-term gain of quitting smoking?

Subj: Hopeful
Date: 5/18/2005

I have been taking Zyban for about a week. I have noticed any side effects, except feeling loopy the first day or so. I can smoke a cig and not be able to smoke the whole thing. They just don’t taste good anymore. I hope this really helps me & my mom to quit smoking!

Subj: Severe itch with Wellbutrin
Date: 5/19/2005
I started taking Wellbutrin and began to have the severe itch associated with this drug. I immediately called my doctor who suggested that I try Benadryl, which I did. Three months later I am still itching – anyone else? HELP!!

AskDocWeb: A dermatologist may be able to help you with this problem, he’s the specialist.

Subj: Trouble sleeping with Zyban
Date: 5/20/2005
I’ve experienced trouble with sleep so I’d recommend cutting out all caffeine during the treatment. I also feel confused and disoriented really bad. The good side is that not smoking hasn’t been nearly the challenge it was in the past when I have quit.

AskDocWeb: It might help if you try taking it early in the morning.

Subj: Zyban side effects with ADHD
Date: 6/1/2005
I’am now going for 14days Thursday. I am smoking less cos the smoking does not taste the same anymore my mouth is dry almost all the time. I am sitting here typing and seeing yellow streaks…I am an ADHD person, it keeps me calm for a while but then I go round and round, I also have joint pain and experience a fever of some sort…

AskDocWeb: These are symptom that you need to discuss with your physician.

Subj: Feedback from Lin
Date: 6/9/2005
I have started zyban two weeks ago, the first week I had moderate anxiety when I stopped smoking, the anxiety went away. Right now I can say I have no noticeable reactions, other than the cravings for nicotine are almost nil. I find this quite amazing since I was a heavy smoker.

Subj: Keep at it and quit
Date: 6/12/2005
I have been taking Zyban for twelve days, not smoking, not craving a smoke, I have this headache and dizzyness am a little upset in the tummy and can’t sleep for any more than an hour at a time. All this is a pest but after reading the above I will not stop the Zyban. I will keep at it for a bit longer and QUIT SMOKING FOR GOOD.

AskDocWeb: If you take the Zyban in the morning, you will find it easier to sleep at night. But on the other hand, you may be having a reaction to Zyban. If you are then the stomach pains may increase along with the dizzyness.

Subj: Zyban and birth control pills
