Subj: Worried about side effects
Date: 11/30/2005
I have been taking this for two weeks now and no side effects, after reading all this I am worried so much I don’t want to carry on with it, should I stop or carry on…
Steve
AskDocWeb: Side effects are most likely to show up within the first week. If you haven’t had any then you will likely be okay. And good luck with quitting smoking.
Subj: Breast tenderness/swelling
Date: 1/2/2006
Is it normal to have breast tenderness/swelling while taking Zyban? I began taking the single dose on 25 Dec and began the double dose on the 28th…breasts starting hurting around the start of double-dose. Will it subside?
Kris
AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of these symptoms while on Zyban. Talk to your doctor about this problem.
Subj: Bad reaction
Date: 1/9/2006
Should this drug be taken with food or is it ok to take on an empty stomach once you wake up? I am asking because when I take my vitamins on an empty stomach in the morning I feel like I have drank battery acid and fear I am tearing up my liver and kidneys.
CLC
AskDocWeb: In rare cases Zyban has been known to cause stomach ulcers and liver damage.
Subj: Zyban side effects
Date: 1/14/2006
I’m currently on zyban. I am on my 11 day I have had a few side effects, stomach feeling weird and very hungry but when the food is in front of me I cannot eat. I also cannot take my inhalers so I have to control my breathing myself which is hard but I’m going to keep going because I want to stop smoking. I’m finding that I’m not liking the cigarettes anymore. Good luck,
Emma
AskDocWeb: You should talk to your doctor about using Zyban as an excuse not to use your inhalers. Zyban is an antidepressant, which should help. If Zyban is causing you to have nausea to the point of not being able to eat, then it sounds like you should use another product to help you quit smoking.
Subj: Zyban and inhalers
Date: 1/17/2006
On my 14th day and had no crave for a fag, can not even be in same room as my partner when he smokes, he also on 14th day but not doing to well. I got no more side effects now except I can not take my inhalers still coz it send a warm crushing feeling in and around the chest. I hope this helps for the others that has to use inhalers to be carfull. GOOD LUCK FROM EMMA
Emma
AskDocWeb: You should discuss this with your physician, there are many other options to quitting smoking cigarettes than Zyban. You need your inhalers…especially if you have been diagnosed with asthma.
Subj: Scratching, lumps and welts
Date: 2/1/2006
I am in my third week of zyban – and have gone from 25 cigs a day to 5, I am feeling great but last night I woke six times with scratching and big lumps and welts all over my body, even on my scalp. Does this mean I’m allergic? Should I stop taking it now? How long will these welts last?
Dawn
AskDocWeb: It does sound like an allergic reaction to the Zyban, which can be frightening. The first thing to do is to pay attention to your breathing. If you have any problem with breathing, get medical attention immediately. Otherwise, Benadryl and an ice pack may give some relief. If the welts do not go away within a day or you develop breathing problems go to your doctors office immediately.
Subj: Zyban withdrawal
Date: 2/5/2006
My partner and I have been taking Zyban for the last seven weeks. We did really well, until we “thought” we beat it in about the 3rd week, so we stopped taking Zyban…BAAAAD idea. Her palms and her sole of her feet itched…at night, all night. We also wanted to bite each others heads off and anyone who crossed our path. We went to the doctor and he told us to get back on the pills because the reaction we were having was a withdrawal from nicotine AND zyban!!!
We are both back on it and I just got out of bed a couple of days ago after being in bed for almost two weeks…I did not want to associate with anyone. Now that I am, I think I should have stayed in bed. The littlest thing either makes me angry or makes me cry. I have been happy for a total of about two hours since I think. My partner and friends and relatives think that I should start smoking again.
Oh yeah, we were driving up a hill last week and I started “Freaking Out”. I felt like I was free falling, my partner got really worried and wanted me to go to the emergency room, but as fast as that feeling came, it went away.
Yesterday, while driving, I saw two legs waling in from of me. When I asked my friends if they saw the “legs” they said no. I can’t wait until I could call my doctor, and as of tonight, I am going to start smoking!

Subj: So far, so good
Date: 2/7/2006
I have been taking Zyban for 2 weeks(300Mgs per day). I felt a little nausia during the first couple of days but nothing serious. It’s the first time I’ve felt really confident about giving up smoking. I have been a smoker for 15 years and have tried to quit at least 20-30 times. So it’s so far so good on the Zyban, but I’ll let you know if things go down hill in terms of the side effects.

Subj: Third time with Zyban
Date: 2/7/2006
This is my third time taking zyban first two times it helped for almost a year and six months! Now I’m coming off an opiate habit and trying to quit both at the same time hoping my serotonin levels will be helped by the zyban reducing my withdrawals! I am on the fourth day. First 4 days took mild opiates but stopped cold turkey just as I was hoping the zyban will kick in!
I went through hell for 3 days, all the above side effects multiplied! suicide! skin crawling, a total sense of helplessness and depression! I am mentally strong and fought through it, as hard as it was last night I had to take a xanax to calm me down! but like I said today was good till an hour ago the xanax just relieved some of the pressure and I am calm, thank god I haven’t resorted to opiates for I can never go through another four day withdrawal again like that! People say after 7 days the side effects ease off as it gets used to the serotonin levels in your head! I will keep trying but I might have to quit one habit at a time instead of fighting both at once!
I am happy to say I have opiates sitting in front of me and have no desire to take them, I just want to be normal again! I dont want to be a in a constant internal battle of highs and lows I want to appreciate normality, I cant keep fighting but, unfortuately we all have to come to terms that we are addicts, and, it is catagorized as a disease, a life long disease that can be curtailed but has a sneaking possibility of recurring even ten years down the line!
I wish you all luck with your quitting, just remember from all my experience with quitting the key factor is to realize its your head playing tricks with you if you feel like smoking, say fine I will smoke in five minutes no problem, give yourself five minutes a free go! chances are the craving will have gone away if you are at a later stag of quitting, at the beginning the only thing you can do is take it day by day, I tell myself I’m 27 Im alone I started late in order for me to appreciate marriage love grandkids etc I must be able to give myself a longer chance of survival! I have done it before and will do it again and, I hope you will too!

Subj: Zyban help
Date: 2/7/2006
After reading most posts the common thread to people having these bad side effects are if you were using other drugs prior to the zyban within a month! If you have then the serotonin level fluctuations in your brain will cause the side effects, it would help if you are having a little these feelings to drink a glass of milk or chicken (or work out) these cause a surge of serotonin and can help the drug level you out! I have managed many panic attacks with a glass of milk!

Subj: Disappointed in Zyban
Date: 2/8/2006
I wished that I could report success but instead I had to quit taking Zyban after 7 days. I woke up on the 7th day and honestly thought I was having a massive heart attack . My hubby took me to the Emergency Ward. As the triage nurse was taking my information I mentioned that I was on Zyban. She said “oh no!!”. Apparently she had exactly the same reaction one week before and she too was on day 7 of Zyban. Ended up 9 hours in ER and have quit taking Zyban. Was so disappointed that I could not take it as so many have had such success.

Subj: Ear problems
Date: 2/9/2005
With zyban has anyone ever had ringing or buzzing in their ears, or any ear problems at all?
Deb
AskDocWeb: No, but that doesn’t mean that it cannot be a problem for you.
Subj: Zyban side effects
Date: 2/21/2006
I started zyban about 4 weeks ago, It’s wonderful for the cravings. But the itch will drive you mad. I’ve tried every flavor of lotion on the shelf at the market. It’s horrible, from the top of my head down to the soles of my feet. Feels like your skin has millions of little tiny blisters popping out and you have to scratch them. I’m gonna try and stick it out. It’s awful, just awful.

Subj: So far, so good
Date: 2/27/2006
Use it for a few days, so far so good. I have notice for me I have been a lot happier than normal. Don’t know if this has anything to do with the drug but it’s pleasant. I have not experienced any side effects as of now, (knock on wood). I will let you know how things are going in another week.

Subj: Zyban works
Date: 3/2/2006
I have been taking zyban for one week now and just started on my 2 a day doze. The pills make you feel a bit high, but I can assure you they work. I was smoking to my stop day which I set for the 11th day but now at 7 days I can’t stand the taste or smell of the cigs. No crazy dreams yet but have had swollen eye lids but can’t say that was the pills. Oh, and I was on 40 cigs a day now down to about 4 but as I say they taste real bad.

Subj: Quit smoking advice
Date: 3/19/2006
The last time I was on zyban I stopped for two weeks. The thing to do is take one every morning but still smoke try to not have has many do this all week. Then on the second week take one in the morning and one about tea time still smoke for about three days then keep putting in your mind your stopping eat sugar free gum that helps when two weeks is up don’t smoke. This medication is not for every one but if you’re ok on it then do it, it’s worth it.

Subj: Scared of taking more but
Date: 3/21/2006
I have been taking zyban for 2 days after reading all this scared of taking anymore, but do think a lot of the symptoms anxiety panic attacks lack of sleep could all be down to nicotine withdrawal rather than zyban. I would rather experience a few side effects than carry on smoking damn cigs. Will try for a few days, see how I go. Will get back and let you know but feel like I am just sat here waiting for weird things to happen but then again if you read the side effects for amoxicillin you wouldn’t want to take it and most of us do from time to time. Not every drug agrees with everybody all the time.
